  1. ewwwww these are all so gross if I read this and didn't have a dog I would seriously be thinking about not getting one. Stan sounds such a sensible dog, next dog will be a Stan
  2. haha as my oh says if you don't like our standards we can always lower them!! Had a gorgeous big bulldog who we took on driving holiday with one year old baby. Brand new company car doggie sitting in front seat suddenly gets the urge and let's fly. Excrement completely fills the lovely new cup holders and the little well around the handbrake, big bulldogs can take huge dumps and not known for their digestive ability.
  3. You'd think so but no, so many training bloopers. Proofing him walking up to a bus shelter of people led to him treating previously innocent bus shelters as suspicious. Taking every meal on the road last week taught him not to eat at home out a bowl and yesterday's favourite making recall more formal, calling him in from outside three times "jake come" sit in front if me and get a lick of peanut butter. Last night called him from where he was sleeping on the couch to come to me in the room next door, if he can see me he will normally just look and say "yea whad'ya want". Well trained dog jumps off couch runs past me to cupboard where peanut butter is stored! So much more than timing. I think half the problem is I am a rubbish pack leader. As part if giving it all last week I started making sure I walk through doors first etc, I find this really hard it somehow offends me to be so rude on a very basic level. Interesting what you learn about yourself when dog training.
  4. Haha I was just thinking maybe there's a spot for him in the Twilight series. Gorgeous dog I love black and whites.
  5. It's amazing what dogs can learn, on another thread someone had taught their dog to prompt their OH to change the toilet roll, now that's a useful skill. Corvus you must be an expert trainer to be able to teach him to take a breath on command. When I watch my trainer with Jake she can really get the timing so easily but I do feel a bit like I'm doing open heart surgery with a wooden spoon somedays. Oh well I'm all he's got so we will make do. Ratbag had a better session today he came flying out the car ready to go for his life so we just sat and did some tricks to calm him. Staffyluv I've been using the freeze technique to get good walking, pretty idiot proof as soon as the leash tightens you stop for 10 seconds. If you use your martingale you will hear the chains click before the leash tightens and I use that as my cue to stop. Jake takes 6 weeks to show a change in behavior and this is week 5 so he's getting it now. We took him out for a walk on his own and we walked at a snails pace and as well as walking well he also started to look up which is great and slow walking and stopping takes all the energy out of the walk. He was calm by the time we got back and we casually chatted in front of Chili and any time he reacted I would hand the lead to Vicki and walk away. In the end he was sniffing around and running back and forwards for thrown treats all within about 6 meters of Chilli. Poor dog I think I nearly walked the paws off him this week and we've had a no dog no food thing happening for a week, think I will banish black thoughts and sleep in tomorrow and he can have breakfast in a bowl at home.
  6. Flappy gums, I said flappy gums
  7. Hi can I ask Bianca if you have experienced any side effects from Prizac. My reactive boy has just gone on it and my vet wasn't very helpful. Said it was unlikely to make a difference and had no side effects but I was wondering if there's anything I should be watching for. The most allergic dog on the planet.
  8. [/img] My link Because bulldogs belong upside down.
  9. I found it very good for my DA dog, it took me about 35 days at home as he has major separation anxiety and no previous training. I do some of the excercises out and about, luckily Jakes rubbish at reading so he doesn't know I'm not following in exact order. I think the rule would be to let your dog tell you what he's ready for, if he's doing it easily at the park then go the beach and just repeat the days he struggles with. I was really happy with it because it helped with the lunging, can't lunge whilst sitting and staying and I think by engaging a bit of self control you interrupt the escalating excitement. Lucky you with a beach to go to, I have beach envy now.

  11. Yep he was under Steve and has a prong which does wonders and we moved to a closer trainer because I need more hands on help. If you saw him away from other dogs you would think he was reasonably well trained. I suppose not actually knowing any other reactive dogs and thinking how much he has improved since I got him it was unsettling to hear he is still extremely reactive. I asked for an expert opinion and I do value my trainers experience so it's just hard to know when you cross the line between determined and foolhardy. But thankyou Skye for replying because it is comforting to hear from others who have been through and come out the other side.
  12. I love the black and white, a photo to treasure once they've grown and gone.
  13. This sounds very much like you are bringing him in too close to the other dog. He is uncomfortable, so when you ask him to turn his back on the other dog you're actually asking him to put himself in a more vulnerable position as he can't see clearly what Chilli is doing when he's turned away. It sounds like you're doing something like Behaviour Adjustment Therapy (BAT), which is awesome! But it's also quite a subtle method. I wouldn't want to presume it's going right or wrong. That's up to you and your trainer to assess. The general aim of BAT is to avoid all unwanted reactions. If the dog does any it is presumed they are too close or are being taken away before they are ready. The emphasis is on allowing the dog to disengage in their own time and rewarding that by taking the dog away. That may not be what your trainer is going for, though. Might be worth discussing it with them. Not really BAT I think more a general desensitization and just working out what he is about. I suppose I sort if knew he was very reactive but after a few sessions she told me on Monday that Jake is on the extreme end of reactive and she's not really sure how much improvement we will get. I have been told PTS before but he has improved since I got him so it's still pretty hard to hear. Pulling out all the stops this week, he's been to the (not supportive) vet who has reluctantly put him on a months trial of Prozac, his Thundershirt has been ordered and I'll just figure out a way to sew ice packs in it and all meals are being taken on the road and eaten in presence of other dogs. You can do this Jake!
  14. beautiful leather leash and collar,,,, or is that for me? Already opened his cool coat and new kong and clam shell. Poor dog will have to make do with car ride and giant bone.
  15. Well that's interesting because now that we work with Chilli, the point that Jake most struggles with is when he has to turn his body away. He will turn his head for a treat as he approaches then will stand, very tensely in front of Chilli but as you try turn his body away is when he lets rip. He also has bloodcurdling yell down to a fine art. I think it's better than snarling ( which he's never done) and I find it less aggressive sounding than barking but I know it' freaks people out and the sound really travels. At the moment we are practicing walking up and turning away and I feel that once we can quietly do that a huge hurdle will have been achieved. Maybe just circling him in front of a dog is the way to go, I've started saying "come away" as a command and practice on my chooks who he has some interest in but I think it would be important to nip it in the bud before it gets too wild.
  16. I think I understand your friends problem. She has acquired a unique South African breed known as a Stoepkaker (porch pooper in translation). This breed of dog may outwardly resemble many other small dog breeds and is characterized more by its behavior than appearance. Feisty and yappy with little respect for size or anything else this dogs pinnacle of training is achieved when it is able to fulfil it's name and learns to ( mostly) ablute on the porch. Also known as a skoothond (although they rarely skoot) ignoring commands is trained at an early age. Retraining will require considerable effort (we South Africans are a resilient lot) as a certain amount of obnoxiousness is part of the breed standard.
  17. Glad to see some other boobies we had two cockatiels, Rex who became "sexy" and a "new bird" who went from noobee to booby, nothing perverted here at all. Jake gets Chubs, Hank was Smelly Hank or Poonie.
  18. Well sit is the same in English and Afrikaans, just flatten the I a bit. Come is "kom" which has the o pronounced the same as in "on". There you go, online translator. I'm in St Ives and am using Vicki Austin out at Hornsby, only a short drive and she wouldn't have a problem with swf's. She's been very good for my short, chunky, angry.
  19. how about a treasure hunt with all the things from the Christmas carol the twelve days of Christmas. Not in any order but the partridge in a pear tree, the rings, drummers etc, could be room for interpretation?
  20. hehe I have a little panel van and when I come home from shopping and open the back doors Jake jumps in and starts going through the bags. Good for you though for thinking of the kids, so far I've ordered a lovely leash and collar for him but hadn't even given a thought to the chidlers.
  21. I just ordered Jakes in Garnet but now I see black it looks good. Oh well thought next time would get martingale looks awesome with the silver.
  22. Your dogs are so gorgeous, you must have a cute dog shop that you go to! I'm a bit partial to the squishy faces but Luka is an amazing looking dog. Do you plan on showing him, I think that face could definitely be on dog food or paint cans or anything. I'd probably buy perfume with his pic on the packaging!!
  23. Yep, that's me always get the wreck. Oh well I am resigned to my wobbly dining room table, lounge suite with "character" and loopy dog, we're a good match.
  24. That's such a good idea although I can't think of anything except maybe I will row Jake over to the island in narrabeen lakes and we can just camp there until he gets over his nonsense!
