Maybe post this in General or OT? You might get more of a response. -
Ridgeback And His Nun Ear?!?!?! Help :-)
*kirty* replied to RidgieAmy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Puppies ears can do all sorts of crazy things. I would keep massaging it every day and it should settle. Is he going to be a show dog? -
Sick Dog, Vets Don't Know What's Wrong
*kirty* replied to *kirty*'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Would you expect to see pain when you manipulate a joint in polyarthritis? My gut tells me it is meningitis and iggies are prone to it apparently. But regardless, the treatment for meningitis, rat lung worm and polyarthritis all involve high doses of steroids and that is our plan for tomorrow. The other two differentials (pancreatitis and blockage) are trickier. I don't think its pancreatitis but I am giving her low fat food just in case. Hopefully the u/s tomorrow will reveal if there is a blockage. Rappie, do dogs with blockages normally want to poo? Because she doesn't want to. She pees and wants to come straight in again. She also hasn't vomited at all which I would have expected since she has eaten today? ETA: Christina, I'm asking because the vets aren't sure where to go from here. They have given me heaps of ideas but I wish someone would just say 'ok lets do this now'. They have suggested a spinal tap but they weren't overly keen on it and its a lot of money fir something that may not be needed. I think I will run more bloods tomorrow and get a urine sample too. Oh and want to hear something ironic? I only took out insurance for her on Sat morning (when she was healthy as a horse) which of course means none of this will be covered. -

Thats what we are treating for at the moment. She can't start steroids until tomorrow morning though because of the metacam. How quickly did you see improvement ish? -

She's getting worse again. She now has definite neck pain and cries if I move her. She just wants to sleep. -

I did think of liver, but she has no jaundice and bloods were normal. Infection should show on bloods too. So devastating to see her like this. -

I just googled lung worm in dogs, and I don't think it fits. I will ask though as we do have a lot of snails around here. Googling that though also lead me to find that my cat has Feline hyperesthesia syndrome! Been wondering why he acts the way he does, now I know. :) He doesn't self mutilate, but the lightest touch often sends him into a grooming frenzy. What should I be looking for with a urine test? -

Yep WBC normal. I haven't done a urine test, the vets didn't suggest it. It's so frustrating and upsetting! She has been checked by four vets who I trust and nobody can give me answers. -

Blockage is possible, but she doesn't have any abdo pain or vomiting. I will ultrasound her at work tomorrow and see if anything shows up. They 'ruled out' spine because she has no spinal pain, all her reflexes are normal and she has normal range of movement. Pers, not as far as I'm away. No pine trees near here and no pine products. Only water around the place is indoor water bowls, and outdoor clam shell and water bucket. -
My little iggie Jolie is very sick and the vets can't work out what's wrong. She is doing much better today but she is still not right, and if there is no improvement tomorrow we will be seeing a medicine specialist. I just wanted to write down all her symptoms in case something jumps out to someone. So far, they are thinking meningitis or pancreatitis but they don't seem to fit 100%. Her symptoms are: Lethargy Fever (40.2) Shaking Dehydration General body pain/aches but no specific sore spots Hunched back Tail tucked right up Stiff gait Head held down low Lack of appetite Yelping when picked up (sometimes) Bloods were relatively normal but lipase levels were 1200, WBC normal, creat was low (i think 46 from memory?) Any ideas? She has been on a drip for approx 32hrs and urine output seems normal. She hasn't pooped yesterday or today but she has only eaten about 5 tbsps of food in that time. Metacam didn't do anything so she is now on Tramadol for the pain. She had clav the first night (they thought she had an infection) then cephalexin.

But what about raising money for animals that have already been saved/rehomed, or raising money for a dog that goes to another rescue but the group never gets the money (as previous posters have said). Surely that needs to be investigated!

You can order the kits online and get them done at any vet. The test part is pretty set price, but vets can vary in the collection fee. We use Animal Technologies (think thats the name) at work.

I'm so sorry Nic. I have tears in my eyes for your family. -
Look at that dog's nails too. Can't believe it can walk with the nails + weight...

Yes, he is a Rozate puppy. :)

My boss has just adopted a new Aussie Shepherd puppy, who is also our new clinic dog. Boss had to go away for a few night so I'm puppy-sitting. :) His name is Blue, he is almost 9 weeks old and he is having a ball with Jolie (it's great because they are tiring each other out). I've told her she needs to get him in line very soon though because in a few weeks he will be bigger than her. :)

Sometimes if they are all blocked up, they can't smell their food properly so they don't want to eat. Try something smelly like tuna mixed in with wet food, etc. Warming the food helps too. Hills A/D is great stuff too - its highly palatable, highly nutritious for unwell animals.

Give her honey to soothe her throat. Not sure why he put her on ABs and AIs though...

I was just driving home, about to turn onto my street when an Irish Terrier trotted out in front of my car! Luckily I was going very slowly so I stopped easily, but there was another car behind me so without really thinking, I opened my door and called the dog. He happily jumped in, and gave poor Jolie the shock of her life lol! Thankfully he was very friendly. I remembered seeing him with his owner earlier in the day so I sent my passenger off to door knock with the dog in his arms (he had no collar and would have preferred to stay in the car with us!). His very relieved owner was grateful to us for bringing Brady home, but has no idea how he got out of the yard. Naughty pooch!

So if there are homes available for these horses, why are they at the sales? If there are homes available, why is the dogger the highest bidder? They don't bid high so its not like people can't outbid them. Maybe you should be condemning the people who sent these horses to the doggers, instead of the guy just doing his job. The racing industry that encourages breeding and disposal of thousands of horses every year is more to blame than the dogger. All meat products come from animals who have been killed, often not particularly humanely.

Lots of dogs want to pick on my old girl Maisie. It has always been that way. She is a working breed mix so no extreme features, and she isn't interested in other dogs so she isn't rude. But all the fosters, all my own dogs and random dogs we meet out want to have a go at her! Its not full-on attacks, but just this need to grab at her, annoy her, jump on her, etc. Its very odd!

Awesome photos as usual! I love the 'walking' fish! So cute. :)
