Choosing A Dog To Go With Golden Retreiver
*kirty* replied to thomo84's topic in General Dog Discussion
Another Golden? Or perhaps Labrador or Finnish Lapphund? Do you want to do dog sports or anything, or just have another dog like your Golden? -
Pugs and Frenchies can't - they are too top heavy! LOL

Blue merle wasn't a recognised colour in Danes up until fairly recently. ETA giant breed pups can cost a fortune to raise. Everything costs more (fleas, wormers, etc) due to their size and they eat like horses. Maybe not $1000 each but certainly a lot.

Reputable Cat Rescue In Canberra?
*kirty* replied to koalathebear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Sorry, that was directed at the OP, not Andrea. :) I'm sure she will give them all the right info. -
Looks like allergies or a mild upper respiratory infection. Keep her warm, keep her eyes clean (wipe with plain water, not saline) and get to the vet when you can. :)

Agree with pers. If the dog is castrated at a yound age it shrinks very quickly. But when more mature males are done, the sack can be quite saggy for a while. It will look pretty gross right now while its all swollen too, but it should start to settle down and shrivel up soon. :)

Reputable Cat Rescue In Canberra?
*kirty* replied to koalathebear's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Just make sure she knows that it is a good idea to keep new foster cats seperate for a wek or two at least to let them settle and to make sure they aren't harbouring any illnesses. But its also very important to understand that many adult cats hate other adult cats, and may never be able to live harmoniously within a home with each other. Cats are very different to dogs, and sometimes no amount of patience ot careful intros will make them get along. -
Obstruction (partial perhaps)?

Does Anyone Know What A Reasonable Price Is?
*kirty* replied to ♪♫LMBC♫♪'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Most modern anaesthetics are very safe and if his bloods are normal, I wouldn't worry. We knock out old dogs every day with no problems. We even recently did surgery on a 17yo dog with a heart murmur. He had a perfect anaesthetic and recovery. :) -
Foster Cat & Her Little Kittens!

Oh look at little Skeeter!! Squee!! -
Seriously?? How is putting silly clothes on a dog abuse?? Does it hurt the dog? No. Does it cause the dog to suffer? No.

Do they come with pedigree papers? If not, walk away.

An x-ray won't show a torn ligament, but it could rule out other problems (fracture, etc). Cost of surgery depends on what surgery they have done and where. My dog had a TPLO done at a specialist and it cost several thousand. But a De Angeles suture done at the local vet might cost $1000ish. And there is another technique that comes in somewhere between. Also remember that these techniques are 'delaying arthritis' as the specialist told me, so get the dog on joint supplements now. Mine is on Sasha's blend and glucosamine tablets.

Sighthound People Is This A Sloughi?
*kirty* replied to mixeduppup's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
LOL its like people who adopt rescue moggies and then decide they must be a purebred... Any black cat must be a Bombay, any blue cat must be a Russian Blue... We had someone bring in their 'Korat' the other day which I was very excited to see, but when I asked them about it they got it from the RSPCA (where it was listed as a DSH). -
We write scripts for patients on long-term human meds, but many clinics won't do it. Vets still need to make money. :)

Average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 4-5yrs, but indoor cats can live well into their late teens/early twenties. Pretty sure the oldest cat was a Siamese that lived to 32. Old cats can suffer from high blood pressue leading to blindness, so watch for any signs of vision loss.

Go to the vet and get some Advantage. Washing them isn't enough. I would treat all the pets with Advantage to make sure you kill them all. It will also kill fleas in their environment.

I am still seeing pitbull puppies advertised online in Victoria. Advertised as pitbulls, not pretending to be anything else. The people who continue to do this, who flaunt the law and think they can do whatever they want and that they have the right to own a 'tough' dog are the reason that this stupid law will never be overturned.

Problem With Hair Snagging In Guard On Clipper
*kirty* replied to fuzzy82's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I would chuck the guard/comb and get yourself a #4 or #5 blade. I hate using combs. Also make sure the coat is really dry before clipping. -
I work at a vet clinic, and its always a pleasure to have crate trained dogs in hospital! Dogs who are not used to being crated often get very distressed while in the cages before and after surgery. Some are so bad and get so stressed that the nurses have to hold them on their laps or keep them on a lead all day! The ones who have been crated usually just go to sleep in the cages.
