  1. Well my own name is such that my friends call me Shaz, Shazza, Shazbot and Shags or Shagger (the last two I can do without!) and I have Cattle Dogs........Unfortunate or Bogan Heaven?? :p I'm a bit of a fan of old fashioned human names for my crew. My most recent dogs were/are: Sheila - "Sheila the Red Heeler" (RIP) Ladies name and Aussie Slang for female. Lot's of people still call ME Sheila! :) Trevor - "Trev the Rev" Just a good Aussie blokes name and I know a couple who are real characters. Mick - Mick Dundee and my Dad's Middle name. Yes, he is like a Croc, especially when playing tug. Lena - I just like this name which was also inspired by Lethal Lena the famous QH. (If she can move like that I will be delighted). Her nickname is Lenatic. I've had people get confused about whether they are my kids or my boyfriend in conversation. Two of my former foster dogs were named Cecil and Norman aka Stormin Norman and I might recycle those down the track at some stage. Sadly Cecil passed away recently and his owners adopted Norman. FWIW my huge cat is named "Yowie" because that's the noise he made all the way home from Queanbeyan Pound (and it's a mythical Aussie Monster which is oddly accurate). My two Appaloosa's are named Brave (which is the only name I seem to lengthen rather than abbreviate to "Bravehorse") and Chant. The most recent addition is a JRT who belonged to my deceased Uncle. He is named "Lucky" which will remain, but I'd love to call him Elmer for obvious reasons! S
  2. I'm not a Beneful fan based on my personal experience. When fed to the foster dogs, many of them had stomach upsets or diarrhea. A couple of them started to refuse to eat it. The symptoms ceased as soon as it was no longer fed. It may have been the preservatives and colouring, I don't know, but the dogs certainly did not do well on it. S
  3. Hi seld, Just some anectodal feedback from me. I had a beautiful red ACD who lived until she was 17. In her twilight years she had arthritis and was hard of hearing but was mentally sharp until the day she passed. At one stage the vet tried her on Tramal for her arthritis and within days I felt like I had totally lost my dog She would stand and just stare into space, looking confused about who I was and where she was. She was totally 'out of it' while on the drug and I remember going back to the vet and telling her that if this was the only option for my girl, then I'd rather just let her go. A big call for me as Sheila was my 'once in a lifetime' dog. So, we took her off the Tramal and tried some alternative protocols and strategies and she returned to her normal self. I'm sure Tramadol (assuming it's the same drug here) works brilliantly for some dogs, but it turned my girl into a shell of her former self and I couldn't really tell if she had less pain or not because of her state. Good luck with your boy! Sharon
  4. Will do....I promise I will save them up for you. Send me a PM so I have a record of you, otherwise you will get lost. :) Awesome, will PM you. Thanks! S
  5. I've got an Anivac. I bought mine second hand. I had a few issues with the pump but the company that sold it sorted it out for me at the Canberra Royal last year. I think it does a great job, but yes it does make a loud sucking noise. Some of my dogs are fine with it and really enjoy it. A couple of the others are taking a while to convince......these dogs also hate the normal vaccuum doing the floor anywhere near them though. S
  6. Hey Sheena, If you win any more Schmacko's, please don't bin them. I'll happily take them off your hands, and cover postage, for training my rescue dogs. Between working with my own and doing basic training with some of my fosters it costs me a small fortune in treats. I'm too time poor to bake my own. Sharon ACDR
  7. I've had a premonition about how I will eventually go out. Death by giant furball If the hair in my food, drinks and on my clothes is anything to go by, the amount swallowed over a period of many years would have to be bordering on epic. The autopsy would likely reveal I was slowly killed by at least three different species, possibly more. Has anyone else here ever seen the Ren and Stimpy episode where they started up an enterprise selling hairballs for money? S
  8. Good news about Stuart Andrea and positive-looking news for Coop. Terriers.......yes, they are into everything! We have a 'flush em and rush em' team thing going on here which I'm trying hard to discourage and avoid. Terrier sniffs it and Cattle Dog biffs it. Not doing my blood pressure any good at all. Fortunately so far it has mainly been rabbits that have foolishly come into the house yard. We don't go into the paddocks this time of the year with the dogs. S
  9. Get well soon Anthony, you definitely deserve some good Karma Mate. S
  10. Thanks Nek and Jelly re the info on the calming paste. I'm also sorry to read about what happened when the Uni girls decided to go out and leave Roo at home. Thank God you found Roo before she was injured. I've had similar situations in the past where I've paid people to look after my rescues and left clear written instructions on how to manage them. Sheer dumb luck on a few occasions no animal or person was harmed. Fortunately I've got a couple of friends who help me out if they can (bless them). I'm always more comfortable because I know they will definitely let me know if there are any issues. It does sound quite positive regarding the advice Nek has given you for Roo though which is awesome. S
  11. Congratulations Jelly and Nek, great teamwork. I will continue checking this thread and hoping for more positive updates :thumbsup BTW Nekhbet(so not Bogan-looking), can you advise which calming paste you recommended for Roo please? S
  12. Unfortunately, it's not looking promising for Woody to get to Rhonda on Sunday. Ninahartland, could you please pass on my appreciation to Rhonda for her very kind offer? She is always so generous and willing to assist. We 'may' have an option for Woody to travel early next week, just waiting on confirmation. S
  13. Ninahartland suggested: "If he can get to Sydney (Prestons ) for around 9 am sunday, Rhonda can get him back to Yass /Goulburn." which would be awesome if we can get him a lift to meet Rhonda, although he might need o/n care due to the opening times at Gosford. Details for Gosford Dog Paws: Location: Pateman Rd Erina NSW 2250 Hours: Mon - Fri: 10am - 12noon 12.30pm - 4pm Sat - Sun: 10AM - 12noon Can anyone collect Woody and get him to Rhonda at Prestons by 9 on Sunday please? If not, then we will be still looking for another option through the week or next WE. Any suggestions or assistance welcome, I just can't get away to collect him at the moment. S
  14. Good luck Cooper and Stuart. I hope they recover Andrea. BLOODY SNAKES!!! S
  15. If anyone can assist ACDR by helping Woody the ACD get back to us, we'd be really grateful. More details in transport thread. Cheers Sharon
  16. So where are the owners staying while this reno is going on? What about a dog run if there is space for one at their temporary accommodation or even in the yard of his own house if it is safe? Surely there must be someone within the circle of family, friends and workmates who can assist rather than resorting to euthenasing the poor dog. Purchasing a portable run is probably cheaper than the cost of euthenasia and disposal and its only a short term solution. Biting my tongue HARD at your request KM, but I could probably loan her one for the 8 weeks. It would need to be collected and returned. S P.S. If the owner would like to take up this offer, could I please liaise with you KM. I'd rather not speak to her directly.
  17. Hi Rosetta, Thank you for the suggestion. I could try that, but I have a feeling I would end up spending a fortune on T-shirts as it would be something the others could swing on when chasing and playing with her. My crew are all pretty full-on. Cheers S
  18. This is an interesting and informative thread. I have one itchy dog of four. After trying to pinpoint what the causes might be, I'm leaning more toward the fact that I planted a Kikuyu lawn in the yard. She never had an issue as a pup when it was just plain old paddock grass around the house and I've never actually found a flea on her to say that is what the issue is. I had a flock of Galahs come in and decimate the lawn last year and while she had the occasional sratch it was nothing compared to how uncomfortable she had been. The recent warm weather and rain has meant the lawn has regenerated from what roots the Galahs left and she has started scratching again, especially after a big run around and game outside. My three other dogs still don't seem to be affected, but one of my rescue dogs has also started to scratch a bit and all of them were recently treated with comfortis. Might be a job for Round-Up which is a shame because the yard has just started to look good again. Big job too as the house yard is almost an acre. S
  19. If I took away the clamshell in the yard the dogs might be disappointed but I'd have a full on Magpie mutiny! There is a family of 4 or 5 that basically live on or near my place. They have a pool party in it every hot afternoon. They can be super-noisy with their chortling, poo on my outdoor furniture and steal stuff off the verandah, BUT a few times they have alerted me to exactly where a snake was and were swooping it. So they can keep 'their' pool. I have never seen a snake anywhere near that clamshell though, maybe the maggies protect it S
  20. I have a premier bag and love it. I hope they are still available because I think I got it off the SA ebay supplier. Also have a K9pro training vest which is absolutely fantastic. It's easy to get treats out of the pockets and my dogs and I love the magnetic balls that go on it too. The main issue I have with it is that I sometimes inadvertently get stuck to metal gates and fences and have to pry myself off again S
  21. Hi Andrea, I'm really sorry to hear you have lost two former fosters to snakebite. It must be heartbreaking. I've Just had a brown near the back laundry door. Fortunately, the dogs were inside while I did the obligatory 'yard check', but my cat was out with me. Could only just see it as it was the exact same colour as the dry grass, but lying right out in the open. In this instance, I decided the best plan of action was to contain the cat, who probably would attack it, and watch where the snake went. With a bit of encouragement it eventually went out into the paddock, but I will be on high alert all WE and probably jumping at sticks! Incidentally, there are about 16 solar snake repellers in the house yard and it had to go between two of them to get out into the paddock. Shaz
  22. WooHoo, go Gracie You must be very proud too Aphra. I do love to see the rescue dogs do well in performance sports. S
  23. Sending you love and hugs Nic. I'm so sorry for your loss. RIP Annie. Shaz B
  24. Possibly a good solution for the clam shell, but not what I'd recommend for a bucket necessarily. If a small dog tips in the bucket and can't get back out, the bricks could prevent it from tipping over thus releasing the dog. In the rescue dog runs there are buckets in milk crates to help stop them tipping them out (have had a few Cattle Dogs that like to dig in the buckets), but I would be apprehensive about putting one of those in with my JRT.......maybe I'm just way too paranoid though!!! :) S Reminds me of a story about a Stumpy Cattle Dog puppy only about 9 weeks of age at the time. Owner was visiting a stable complex & being an accomplished horse handler was asked to hold a fractious horse during a veterinary procedure. For safety's sake, or so he thought, he locked the little pup in an empty stable. In the space of fifteen minutes little pup had climbed up & fallen into the water bucket When owner came back to get him, he was motionless in the bucket & had turned completely blue. Fortunately owner & visiting vet managed to resuscitate him. He was a lucky pup though, fortunately did not suffer any brain damage & went on to be an awesome worker on cattle! OMG, that is one lucky puppy. Glad to hear he recovered. Maybe I should have typed "but I would be apprehensive about putting one of those in with my JRT, any small dog or puppies". I know it's not something that you would necessarily immediately consider a danger, but after hearing about the other little dog that tragically died it is now on my radar at least. S
