  1. Hi everyone, So my samoyed puppy not long ago either slept on my wet orange sarong, which was in the laundry, or potentially sat in a puddle of melted icy-pole, I'm not sure which. He just wandered over to me with a large orange stain on the side of his belly  I've brushed the coat thoroughly, washed it with shampoo and brushed it again to no avail. It's paler, but still orange. So, my question is: how on earth can I remove the stain? I know I can't clip his coat and wouldn't for something so silly. Google suggests I can find an enzyme based shampoo, but since those are more geared towards organic stains I'm not sure if they'll work or not. Any ideas?
  2. I saw the pedigrees of my boy's parents at the home of my breeders, but I thought OP meant she had a sibling's papers.
  3. I thought she meant she had a pedigree that listed the sire and dam of her pup, but wasn't her pup because the birthdate is wrong. Maybe I shouldn't read forums on a Saturday morning
  4. I received my puppy's blue pedigree, vet records of vaccination/microchipping/checkup as well as paperwork to register with Dogs Vic with him under my name about 2 weeks after he came home, and that was when they had been filed for during the holiday season and were experiencing delays. I find it weird that the pedigree copy you received list your pup's parents, but are a photocopy? I'd be asking for the original copy. ETA: Glad the breeder gave you such a quick response! Hopefully there will be nothing to worry about now :) ... do we get to see pictures of your new baby?
  5. Well, if you say so! That's my Suleiman :)
  6. We have a few extremist animal liberation reps on our campus. A few have expressed hatred of all breeders. Since my intention is to take Sully to campus and train him there so that he can be prepared when I take him to work in future, I plan to promote purebred dogs to anyone who asks about him. We also have a huge market on Sundays each week on campus grounds that many people attend with their dogs. I've seen quite a few gorgeous purebreds there; frenchies, irish setters, ACDs, goldens, dalmations, danes, GWPs, etc., and they also talk to people about their dogs and the benefits of purebreeding :) I wonder if we could set up an event, like a luncheon or something. It's an enormous area, and dog friendly and our animal sciences department is pretty big. Plenty of people have an active interest in pets... I might ask how one goes about getting permission for that.
  7. If only La Trobe would fund it. I'm sure the lady conducting this study would love the opportunity, but our University has been making cuts left, right and centre so they could build an 84 million dollar molecular sciences department, as to keep up with the competition from other major universities which are more human science orientated. Ultimately it's a business, and we can't do a lot about it.
  8. That is if the bitch in question is even registered/purebred. I imagine the breeder could be put through hell if the progeny of their champion dogs were being cross-bred.
  9. This isn't my study, but I thought I'd spread the word. I know there has been much discussion here about temperament testing and I figured this might interest some of you. :) http://www.latrobe.edu.au/agriculture/research/specialisations/domestic-animal-behaviour/canine-temperament-test
  10. Can anyone tell me more about this expo? Or have links to a good blog coverage of it? I checked out their website but it doesn't go into much detail. I'd really like to go, I just want to know that there will be plenty of responsible pet owners and breeders there. The website used the term "commercial animals" and I worry that that might mean that puppy farmers and their ilk might also be there promoting their animals, and if that was the case I'd want to know that I can avoid them. Is it appropriate to bring my own dog? Or would the overall layout and crowding be an issue (since there are so many different kinds of animals, I don't want to spook them or my pup)? Pleased to know that there will be members of DOL out their promoting the good stuff, though.
  11. To think that people are taking advantage of others who try to be responsible about dog breeding... Honestly, this is why I feel dogs should be supervised in yards or in locked runs. Being unable to keep your dog safe in your own backyard is unfortunate, but with poisonings, tree dwelling wildlife (in our case) and idiots who put their fertile bitches over your fence, you don't get much of a choice.
  12. Goodness, you must all be getting so excited now! Get some sleep in between all the ooh and ah-ing, you'll need it. Can't wait to see more pictures when they arrive :)
  13. Eastern Europe when I travelled there was fairly dog friendly all over. Dogs in hotels, under chairs in restaurants (or owned by the restaurant and sleeping by the bar), in parks, at concerts and in shops. I'd love to take Sully to Germany with me one day, met so many lovely dogs in dog-friendly places there.
  14. A rescue I follow on facebook recently took in a huge number of purebred dogs because the breeder had fallen terminally ill. The comments from other followers were in the same vein. It's a breed that has a coat that isn't generally clipped, and because a breeder criticized shearing all the dogs down they were told they only cared about shows and profit :p
  15. Hi everyone, I'm trying to get my samoyed, Suleiman, used to strangers and other dogs. Because of his vaccination schedule it's been difficult to do so safely, especially as most people I know in the area don't own dogs (independent university students), and some of those who do don't necessarily keep them up to date with their healthcare :/ Sully has Luca to interact with, but because they're both young they haven't exactly taught each other any manners  I wonder if anyone with friendly dogs who are up-to-date with their vaccinations might like to meet up in the Banyule area with a few friends and I for a puppy play date?
  16. As heart wrenching as the situation has been and is, I am so glad to hear you'll follow this up. Not he, you nor anyone deserves this when it could have been prevented so easily if people had been doing their job the way it is supposed to be, and is expected to be, done. I wish I could offer you more comfort. Again, please don't ever blame yourself. It's clear from your photographs what a wonderful life you gave him and what a wonderful owner you are to your dogs.
  17. I would also like to thank Steve for this extremely generous invitation. I'll get details together :) And Hongi is such a gorgeous little furball! The photo of the two of you together is especially lovely. My life as a puppy parent, much like the life of my puppy, is pretty chaotic right now. Lots of new learning experiences for both of us. Having the support of a vet, your breeder and the community at large is a huge benefit - don't know how I'd manage without it.
  18. Oh, whoops. Always forget how important that part is! He's a white samoyed :)
  19. Hi everyone, This vaccine was brought up in another thread here. It was said that it was administered at 10 weeks, after the puppies had received protech C3 at 6 weeks, and that they didn't need a follow-up vaccine except for the usual boosters. Suleiman was given Protech C3 at 6 weeks by his breeder. I was recommended to give him his next shot at 12 weeks, and while I absolutely have faith in my breeder, I really would like to socialize Sully out of the house as soon as possible (I'd heard it's best to wait 2 weeks after the second vaccine before taking a puppy out). The reason being that he is picking up some of the bad habits of his lovely rescue companion here at home (though good ones too), in particular the nature of his "play" style which is rougher than other dogs and puppies I've encountered (thrashing his head while playing bitey face, and accidentally injuring Sully by doing so). This behaviour later when Sully is fully grown and around 30kg probably won't be tolerated by playmates. I don't want to take him to puppy school or out to other people's homes until he's had and has settled with his second vaccine, I consider the risk too high. So, my question is, can I have this Nobivac administered instead? Or can C3 be safely administered at 10 weeks, rather than 12 (I have records of his last vaccine at 6 weeks, of course, to be accurate)? Or would it be best to try and discourage the behaviour as much as possible and wait it out until 12 weeks as currently planned? I realize I'm crazy and a newbie. Sorry about that
  20. It's alright. I'm in precisely the same boat as you. I feel like a neurotic sometimes. When you're inexperienced, as I am, it's probably for the best that you seek advice when you aren't sure - and, let's face it, a vet that offers an advice line is more immediate than any other source and that's critical in the unlikely event that urgent care is necessary. All it shows is that you love and care about your puppy, which I think is something all of us here admire in an owner.
  21. While I don't think I've witnessed anyone flogging their dog in public, but D'smum reminds me of the time an old gentleman was walking his dogs (a chihuahua and a golden) on the campus grounds. The chi ran from him to greet me and he was calling after it. I told him it was okay and that I loved dogs, not realizing that after having successfully fooled me into believing I was being approached for the sake of sharing the love around, the Chi had taken off with the packet of hot wedges I'd had tucked into my library bag  I found it funny, and I'd have let him and the other dog have the food if I didn't know it was bad for them. Old man was apologetic but had a laugh with me about it afterwards. I think I'd have some fairly strong, loud words with anyone I saw abusing their dog in public.
  22. TSD - thank you so much! Excellent and detailed advice and resources. I'll direct my housemate (who owns Luca, should have clarified) to them, but I'll also practise it with Sully myself. :) I wasn't sure why it was treats specifically, but I suppose if it's the highest value resource then it makes sense for him to become touchy when other dogs are around.
  23. Yeah, don't kill the RBB. Bad plan. I agree with the water suggestion. If not I'd be inclined to call around services like the fire brigade - though, depending on where you are, they may have their hands tied. Animal control can't give you any advice?
  24. Advance puppy with plain yoghurt, cooked chicken breast, rice and oats with beans and carrots cooked in beefstock, boiled egg and fake bacon treats (which are made of chicken).
