A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy
Steph M replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Puppy Chat
Gus does both, though I would rather a loud than a stinker, cause his stinkers are VIOLENT. The loud ones are fab though because if he's asleep he scares himself awake and stares at his behind for a minute like 'did you do that...' Cracks us up. He's certainly a farter though. -
My sister was an absolute demon, up until about 20 and she has just had her first and the payback is already beginning. I'm not game! Can I send Gus too? You could make a fortune! Sure Steph... your Gus could be a little bugger like my Stella  He's probably got a head start there, he works hard at it!

Sounds bizarre they won't even arrange to have the other store send it over? Jerks! Haha. That shipping is mad! Ick! Can't hurt to call the other store and check I guess, such a pain! When I was younger they were always out for hard rubbish when the kids outgrew them. Curses! -
Leaving Clam Shells With Water In Dog Runs
Steph M replied to mantis's topic in General Dog Discussion
It can be risky if the dogs are older and lack balance, coordination, and strength. My two older dogs are medium sized and there is not only the risk of the clam shell tipping up, but also the risk of them not being able to stand up when in there (because they struggle on smooth surfaces). So mine only have access to it when I am home. Would it be worth investing in some of those bath grip things as well? I hadn't even thought of this. http://www.squidoo.com/non-slip-bath-decals The paw print ones would be on theme :D (I know it's a super old thread but there's been some discussion in the new puppy thread of clam pools, it is getting warm again!) -

Can you con them into ordering you one? http://www.bigw.com.au/toys/outdoor-play-activity/sand-pits/bpnBIGW_0000000006388/fountain-multi-purpose-play-shell It seems they can be bought online, not sure about your location but worth a shot! I know shipping sucks but they look pretty good to me. I might grab two. One full of sand and one of water. Hahaha. Beach party! -
"The test is desinged to identify that your dog is; Friendly, approachable and manageable. Shows no aggression towards other dogs (particulary small ones). Shows no aggression towards humans (particulary in the presence of food and toys etc.)" Sounds pretty fab to me. Would also save a lot of 'is it friendly or not' worries when out and about, I know it isn't a guarantee and things do change, but there's some peace of mind in that.

This isn't a statement but I was perusing Gumtree (I just can't help it!) and saw this- http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/melbourne-cbd/dogs-puppies/lookin-for-staffy-pup-to-introduce-to-my-friend-whos-scared-of-dogs-/1026605786 "My friend is terrified of dogs. She thinks Staffy's are the cutest things in the world and wants one in the next year or so but she is petrified of dogs. I am looking for someone who has a pup to introduce her to it, but after a while I want to introduce her to one about a year old and then an even older one. Must have a very calm temperament. Please and thank you!" Um. Recipe for disaster! And why would you want a dog if they scare you so much?

I think it's very sad, and hard to know who is at fault. If the dog really did have intent to protect his people then it probably had to end the way it did. The elderly/infirm owners probably couldn't drag him off if he really went beserk, and 60kg is a lot of dog for anyone to have charge at them. Where were the owners, anyway? If I heard my dog carrying on out the front at something I would be out there in a heartbeat. However if the dog was just having a grizzle and walking off as it is implied in the article then I find it even more sad. I was of the belief a shot is the last resort, not a cop but I do find that alarming. Surely you would shout for the owners first? I don't know what the answer is, perhaps there needs to be some dog body language training something? It does sound a bit odd to me, but that could well just be the emotive journalism.

http://www.goldenretrieverforum.com/golden-retriever-puppy-up-1-year/110957-furminator-tool.html I did spot this, maybe that would shed some light? The idea of using it with a light hand seems to make sense, but again I'm no expert! -

Well thats a quick hundred bucks gone....You're evil! -
I got so mad at a woman and child at the park today at the park. Really badly. Gus made a friend and they were playing and wrestling on the grass near the car, I was getting ready to go so had the leash out and was waiting for an opportune time to break conversation with this Lab's owner and this 4 year old kid comes flying out of nowhere, right in between the dogs roughhousing and starts laughing madly and squealing. I grabbed Gus and dragged him back, he was licking this kid like a loon and the mother walks up TAKING PHOTOS and grinning. I told her she was DAMN lucky the kid didn't get bitten, so she said 'if your dog bites you should muzzle it, she has a big dog at home' ARE YOU EFFING KIDDING ME?! Meanwhile she lunges forward to grab the other dogs tail, misses so grabs Gus on the face. I may have not so politely told her to muzzle her little brat next time. I just could not fathom why you would let that occur, let alone be taking PHOTOS! The mind boggles.

They sound fab!!!! Will have a look now (and blame you when I am poor) :p -
I've never had any great trouble, does this go for bones and the like too? I have to say it does sound a bit OTT to me. I hear you shouldn't freeze food as it kills off vital nutrients too. I think we might just carry on as we are ;)
-
Would people really say it's imperative to freeze food? I tend to freeze when buying in bulk, but if I see a bag of fabulous looking beef hearts or the like marked down at Coles, that will likely be dinner for Gus. Is there any benefit other than the parasite killing that I'm missing?

I can't stand that! 'Oh he doesn't like puppies/undesexed dogs/females/males/old dogs/small dogs/big dogs' Fabulous, I'm glad you're aware of this! Well done you, gold star! Now how about taking some of this incredible, mind boggling insight and working with that? Or should we just all accept that you know about it....haha.

My spiel is pointing out that the cheapest dry food at the shops (excluding the real basic homebrand, I won't even pretend that's a legitimate food!) is a few dollars a kilo, requires a huge intake and comes right out the other end. I'm paying less, scooping less and feeding less. How can you not win?! Between us both, we'll get there! Haha. Boy am I jealous. You must just about fall over laughing at 20 dollar rabbit. I do, I see hundreds of the fur-jerks hopping around under the westgate bridge every day! One woman I know was very proud all her dogs left were the teeth. Ick, but I could totally deal if Gus promises that will be the case. I don't fancy waking up and rolling over to that in the dog bed next to ours.
