  1. You aren't giving her too much of a chance to show you she is showing down perhaps. I never jog or run with my dogs any more because of my arthritis, it's not possible. I walk them and sometimes you'll see that the older dogs are desperately trying to keep up. If this happens for a few days in a row then I start taking them on a shorter walk (I have more than one dog) or I do what I call relay walking. Always take the youngest fittest dog and then go and get dogs of different abilities and go shorter distances which means the youngest dog gets sufficient exercise and so do the others who are almost twice his age. I think you can safely say that at some point soon the distance you are travelling and the pace will become too much for the older dogs but the key to it is being very in tune with your dogs and watching them very closely in order to pick it up. There could be a slight dragging on the lead. One of my old dogs walks away from the front door when I get the leads out if she is having an off day.
  2. Agreed, but I think wife has decided she wants a fluffy. Took my trusty Italian Greyhound with me but explained they would definitely not suit LOL.
  3. A grey could fit, just needs to be the right one of course. The wife wasn't keen. I took 4 dogs with me - with different type coats as they don't seem to know the difference. They thought they might like Dougal (Pom cross foster dog) but he is quite challenging and I don't think he'd be right for them - he's ex puppy farm and has health and other issues that are ongoing. I let him off the lead and he did what he did wherever I take him - set about trying to escape. He doesn't do it here and never has, I think he's decided he's staying LOL.
  4. Thank you, sadly they won't do 6 yrs of age. Haven't asked about a greyhound, am visiting today and will mention it - I think it would be great as long as cat friendly!
  5. My neighbour asked me to help her friends find a dog. They are new to dog owning and also have a 14 year old cat who is OK with the dogs they have minded. They want a Medium sized dog. Criteria is: * housetrained * not too active * easy care coat * good with cats * good with other dogs of all sizes Husband works from home and will walk the dog every day. I went through Petrescue and didn't come up with a lot of suitable dogs, they are very inexperienced so I think they will need a very easy dog and I can't seem to find one! I'm going there tomorrow to do a yardcheck and show them my dogs (which are all small and they are sure they don't want a lap sitting dog).
  6. Took my Italian to the vet with a lump and it turned out to be infected hair follicles (has a fancy name) - phew!! Good news on yours too ....
  7. So very sad for you, hugs and take care.
  8. I have no clue what you are going on about with the greyhounds. The two I had when I was on this forum one was adopted and I am facebook friends with her and the dog is very spoiled and in a good home. The other one was also adopted and doing well how that is damaging the breed I do not know. Seems to me that in the last year a few more greyhound rescues have popped up and although they all seem to be full all the time it seems that a lot of greyhounds are being saved, I even referred someone to GAP to get a dog and they did and are very happy with their new dog. So you have me stumped on this one but if that is how you feel so be it I wont ever change your mind. I'll guess it has something to do with muzzles for a start. There was a thread last year where you were quoted from FB. Now that really isn't good enough Happy Camper - how dare you put other people's pets at risk.
  9. I would never do this. I've worked in rescue for years now and in one particular group that I spent many years in, one of the issues was that not enough was known about the dogs when they were rehomed. You really had to hope for the best sometimes and there were definitely cases where the people were penalised. That rescue group does not refund any money at all if a dog is returned. Just like pounds. What this meant to the dog in some cases that I discovered was that they were sold on elsewhere, given away or even euthanased - perhaps the long drive back to the shelter was inconvenient and the problem had to go asap. For me, every dog I rescue is precious to me, I would never want to jeopardise their safety by making things hard or unreasonable.
  10. And rescue is bloody hard work. We got an email yesterday morning at 7am, 2 dogs had to go there and then - in another state. This required hours on the phone to so many people, trying to organise within the owner's timeframe. Having managed to get one dog in foster care and transport arranged for another on Monday, we then got an email last night to say they'd changed their mind and were keeping the one left. This is almost a repeat of what happened with these people 12 months ago except they kept both dogs at the time. That's just one example of why we've spent hours on the phone in the last two weeks. Easter - a holiday? For some, not for rescuers. Pounds are overly full with dumped dogs so their owners can go away without having to pay any kennel fees for their beloved old dogs. Sick to death of people and that's how it gets you sometimes. I do it because I love dogs and hate to see them being disposed of like garbage. It really isn't for everyone.
  11. We have a dog called Huey who needs a homecheck doing in Nambucca Heads. Thanks in advance
  12. Happy birthday Stan!! Hope you are feeling a bit better every day HazyWal!
  13. Many years ago in the UK I did take my Lakeland Terrier to work. He was quite entertaining, did some laps of the office jumping over things my colleagues put out and gave them a great laugh but then ... He was having a quiet 5 mins under my desk when my boss came in to my office (a bit of a strange man), gave me some instructions and then turned to walk out. Bertie suddenly leapt out from under the desk and bit him on the bum!
  14. Took my Toy Poodle foster dog to a home last weekend, she piddled on an item of clothing laying on the floor and then ran and peed on their dog's bed. She's going to be so easy to rehome - not.
  15. I agree but it seems round here that people get there dogs back without paying any fines whatsoever. My neighbours have been serial offenders with 3 or 2 dogs over a period of more than 5 years, they deserve to be bankrupt. There is a serial offender in a close suburb who thinks he's actually in outback Australia as his dog looks like Red Dog. This poor dog gets let out most days and crosses major roads. I was sitting having a coffee and saw the dog that can only have just crossed Pennant Hills Road - 6 lines of traffic, one of Sydney's busiest. It's been going on for several years. This man doesn't deserve to have a dog and the dog has been hit by cars on numerous occasions. It's a joke.
  16. A trap is definitely the way to go, a friend just caught a dog loose for weeks that was terrified and impossible to catch, 1 day after putting the trap out - success!
  17. I'm pretty sure they'll get adopted, Cavvies go like hotcakes. I was just looking for Cavalier Rescue in NSW but could only find one in QLD, I was sure there was one in NSW at some point.
  18. I hope there is a GD enthusiast who has room for him, it does say he hasn't been socialised with other dogs so that would need to be checked out.
  19. So sad that you have to keep fighting and persisting when you have done nothing wrong, things are stressful enough without all that crap. It should have been fixed and dealt with immediately so that you could walk safely and not worry ... It also works on behalf of everyone else that has to walk down the street. Can't see the point of having laws when councils appear to be able to choose whether or not they will implement them. I'm glad your hand wasn't broken and send you best wishes for a speedy recovery and a good result with the situation. Don't give up - you are right to fight. Hope Maddie's a bit better today..
  20. This post is for a work colleague with a female GD puppy. She is going to puppy classes but the instructor doesn't provide any opportunity for the pups to socialise. It's obviously important with a large breed dog that they get to socialise properly, early on. I offered to post and see if there was anyone on the central coast who would be willing to have some play dates??
  21. Poor dog, that's no way to treat them. Whippets would freeze outside in Canberra.
