  1. I think most belly bands do up firmly with Velcro but you could add a nappy pin. Ive heard mostly success stories with them. Many people say they don't have to use them forever either. Theyre not terribly expense I'd give them a go.
  2. These a bunch of coated breeds that would be excellent but to be honest and from personal experience I would stay away from anything with even a bit of coat. I was thinking beagle maybe whippet maybe smooth fox or JR. or perhaps a Staffy If they really want coat I'd strongly recommend a wire coat like a Border Terrier. They are awesome rugged little family dogs.
  3. So weird one of my regulars with a little fluffy told me this morning that a friend lost their old shepherd. They found a puppy from a breeder interstate. The day after it arrived it 'did a big poop with a worm, then died' was her words. The breeder refunded the purchase price.
  4. Tits goes to the beach
  5. First day I met him at the pound
  6. So some of you know I lost my dog to a snake bite last year. I finally got brave enough to try again and started looking around for the right pre loved dog. By chance a few weeks back I met a little 6.5 yo dog at the RSPCA shelter who was not yet out in the adoption area. I put a hold on him and waited almost 2 week for the call to collect him. That was a couple of weeks ago now and 'Tits' as he's now known, has settled in perfectly. Exceeding my every expectation. Photos coming ......
  7. A lot of, but I realise not all, elderly dogs needing rehoming are deceased estate dogs or have elderly owners needing to move to a care situation without their dogs. Often no one in the family or friends is in a position or cares take on an elderly dog, especially at a time of grief or great change. poor dogs.
  8. Small fluffy dogs generally are hard to find in rescue, even harder to find ones that aren't troubled with behaviour & separation issues etc. small fluffy puppies, near impossible! Over here in SA I'd been looking around for a smaller dog for a while. I was happy to take an adult dog, but I had to find the right one, not just one for the sake of it. By complete chance while looking at the RSPCA shelter, having found only the usual working dog mixes, staffy crosses, foxy/Jack Russell types, I was talking to a staff member about my situation and what I was looking for. After a good 10 mins she says hang on I think we have a small dog who's not in the adoption area yet. She called up to see if someone could bring him down. He seemed promising on first sight, and after spending 1/2 hrs with him, was able to put a hold on him. He needed his vet work done before adoption. So I waited almost 2 weeks and finally got a call I could come and collect him. That was 2 weeks ago now, and 6.5 yo 'Tits' has settled in perfectly. I guess the point of my story is that sometimes it pays to scratch beneath the surface, and as others have already said, to get a little fluffy in shelter/ rescue, you pretty much have to be in the right place at the right time.
  9. I had a pretty excited English Toy Terrier owner the other day !
  10. An example here Umm there are certainly Eurasiers here and for quite a few yrs. ive personally met some at shows in SA several yrs ago and groomer friends currently service some here in SA too. That said it's always great to get new bloodlines into Australia but I'd do more research on what is and has been brought here already.
  11. My 6.5yo small fluffy cost more than other dogs at the Rspca! apparently "because of the type of dog he is his adoption fee is $430" usual price for garden variety working and bull breed mixes is $380 I think
  12. I have to say I'm a bit selfish, and although I looked after a few seriously seniors when I did rescue, who I decided had to live out their remaining days at ours rather than adopt them out, I don't think I could consciously adopt a seriously senior dog or one with health issues. Although I did just last week adopt a 6.5 yo dog from the RSPCA!
  13. I find it quite unbelievable that any vet would insult the immune system of a dog presented with skin issues, especially with what is really a non essential vaccine. id be looking for another vet too.
  14. Yes! But the OP said they'd consider a Cavalier so imo the Papillion coat is no more work probably less. I and all my dog groomer friends spend half our lives shaving Cavaliers. Owners find shedding is very high and many of them, especially once desexed, get enormous 'Spey coats'.
  15. I'm not sure I can agree with sitting at the dog park watching a dog 'mingle' from a distance. I think it best to be as close as possible to your dog to manage situations as they may arise in this environment. Having said that the Papillion keeps coming to mind for a pretty good all round choice
  16. Does anyone know a clinic that boards small dogs around the Adelaide metro area. I have a client who left their dog with a relative over the weekend and it broke its hip. Just a year old! Anyway they have to go overseas in a couple of weeks and now don't really want to leave the dog with a relative as it's just had major hip removal surgery. They are looking for boarding options and I really think a clinic would be best just 3. Weeks out from the surgery. I told her to ask her own vet as well. Thanks.
  17. The only thing I can see so far that I'd prefer it to be like here is the phone towers! Great shots, thank you
  18. I went down to semaphore a couple of night this week after work. Lovely evenings. I got a couple of nice pictures. Yours is a beauty.
  19. Yep and there is still a huge perception among the general pet buying masses that a purebred means 'a fancy show dog' and that's not what they want. They don't seem to realise that the majority of purebreed puppies are sold as pets and are not 'fancy show dogs' There is a massive gap in accessibility and information available to the general public between the majority of pedigree breeders and 'all the other easy ways someone can purchase a dog' and not in the favour of pedigree breeders........
  20. I've noticed the opposite to be honest. Down at the beach it's all mutts with a few exceptions of a pair of Bracco and a coated Weimaraner and a few labs and golden retrievers. Most of the dogs I see that are clearly not mixed breeds are to my eye, poor examples of their breeds. its so rare for me to see a dog that takes my breath away with type and soundness and more often than not its a crossbreed I'm handling that stops me in my tracks for general soundness and temperament. Those moments when I think to myself 'they should make this a breed!' I wish it were different. Maybe my expectations are higher than oh squee it's cute , or the fact that it's a xyz breed. I tend to pick them to pieces in my head instead.
  21. I've used Jetpets several times and they've been wonderful every time.. So I'm assuming the pup is from the guy that I linked you to with the older dog? Whoop!
