We have all different equipment used in our classes BUT every owner with every piece of equipment is taught to use it properly. I don't have a problem with clubs or trainers saying they don't use XYZ- provided that if the method they do use is not working for a dog they can explore other options or send the dog on to someone who can assist with a different technique. Not every trainer has to use every technique- but i don't like trainers putting clients off something with emotive language. I have heard just as many 'bad' comments by trainers about food (its just bribery etc etc) as i have correction chains (they're cruel, you'll damage the dog and your reationship etc) and both annoy me!

We went and saw them today!! OMG they are just gorgeous- we have narrowed it down to two so far and will see them in another 2 weeks. They and their Mum are just fabulous- pups have just started playing and exploring- they are all very outgoing so far! Photos to come

I totally agree with you amypie- i think BYB JRT and reg breeder JRT are worlds apart. -
Why shouldn't a dog have a value?

I have trained two and loved them- little feisty but a very quick learner (both good and bad things!) and very responsive to good handling. With good socialisation when they are young and ongoing training of some kind, i think they would be awesome companions.

I have used sensible harnesses with success on some dogs but not on a pug. Almost all of the pugs i have trained have been on martingale collars. No tool will replace good training though- a dog can learn to ignore any piece of equipment!

You know you want to! A couple more photos

Yes definitely trainable- what makes it tricky though is that all of the breeders dogs are lovely- they are all different in terms of temperament and we would be happy with any one of them so if the pups have similar temperaments to the adults (different but all lovely) i don't know how we'll choose. I think we're almost too flexible with the temperament we're after. The breeder is great and said we can wait till 8 weeks to decide and we get to choose before anyone else- which i think is really amazing. No we are not looking to show so we just need sound conformation.

Good boarding and training can be the BEST thing for some dogs and owners. Some owners are so stressed by their dogs behaviour that even with the best trainer and the best techniques, they would struggle with the initial training processes which is very unfair on the dog. Ask the dog whether they would like crystal clear, super consistent training as a start to their training- or a stressed, frustrated or sometimes frightened owner trying their best. The handler still learns to train the dog- but the dog has the 'buttons installed' for the owner to push first. Yes their are dodgy establishments out there but too often, all board and train options are lumped in the same basket. I am sure i would be flamed if i said all group training is a bad idea- too over whelming for the dog, too distracting, inexperienced trainers etc etc. If you see them every week WAH, you could start off giving them some tips and see how you go- does the dog have any problems? As far as age goes- it really depends, i find retention is better in the younger dogs so i think 6-12 months is a good age for that kind of training.

So the question is, for those of you who have done this before- how do you choose? We haven't really done this before- OH chose Jessie because she was the only one in the litter with a tail, I chose Cosmo because i had to get a girl (because of who i was living with) and she has symmetrical markings and Dexter and Georgie were from the shelter- Dexter as a lone puppy and Georgie as an adult. Of course we will consider their temperament of the pups- but given their lines and how they are being raised, i think they will all have great temps. They are all gorgeous- great markings and likely rough or broken coats. We are going to see them on Friday and will take more photos- they will be 4 weeks old with the other litter 2 weeks old. Smoothie girl- i think you should get one too!

Terrier Terror: List Reveals Jack Russell Attacks
Cosmolo replied to myValkyrie's topic in In The News
We don't know why they might attack.. Really? I can think of a few reasons Dog not socialised- Owner did not socialise Dog not trained- Owner did not train Dog not properly contained- Owner did not contain Dog not supervised with strangers and strange children- Owner did not supervise Of course we have no clue about why dogs attack.. -
Me too Erny- but OH prefers the other one in that photo! We don't have to decide for a while yet but it is going to be a tough choice!

More puppy photos-

Erny a desexed dog can't breed in the first place so there would be no pups to sell.
-
Jed, as i said earlier Frankston have done this not to combat supposed over population but to try and reduce a big problem with BYB.
-
Yes, we did it with our panic bolter with a combination of positive rewards and a remote training collar at low levels.

You're right- its just my educated opinion. Sometimes backed up by breeders of the breeds involved, sometimes not. Surely you don't think though that there aren't registered dogs in pounds/ shelters? We could argue the other way too- there could just as easily be some dogs that are believed to be crosses, that are in fact pure. Anyway back to topic- i would love to hear opinions on the comments from Steve about BSL pertaining to cross breeding. For those who would not like to see any cross breeding in future, what do you think about this comparison?
