  1. Over the years with our different schnauzers I have always made a fuss of them on their special day. Zena absolutely loved birthdays and Christmas and would eagerly await her gifts. It was Mollys 7th birthday last Sunday and I swear she knew and my gosh she had a brilliant day. We were camping so it was already special. She was so funny and that’s why I thought of starting this thread and seeing what others did. Molly started the day with a home made dog biscuit and then later I gave her gifts to unwrap. She started unwrapping them herself and found a small chewy dental treat. She then stood with it in her mouth staring at me and then suddenly she took off running down the bush track. I followed. She then headed into some bushes and tried to hide her treat. Naturally with me watching she wasn’t happy leaving it so she tried a few more bushes but eventually took it back to the campsite where she took the plastic wrapper off it and proceeded to eat it. Once she finished eating it she then continued to unwrap the rest of her gifts. One was a long pink bunny, great for tug of war games. She was so excited and run about like crazy. Made me so happy to see her appreciateing everything. More treats as the day wore on plus a few bush walks and multiple soccer games that she instigated. She was one very happy little girl.
  2. I believe Pickles may well be working it all out. My Molly used to sniff Zena all over and would spend most of her days close by her. At times it felt like I had no dogs. I have since thought a lot about it and I think they can tell when the other is sick and somehow I reckon it helped Molly get through the passing of Zena. The days after, Molly was quiet and would look for her but she certainly didn’t mope about as much as I thought she would. I think you have to give the animals a lot of credit. They know more than we think they do. I might be nuts but that’s my opinion.
  3. We have had to make the decision on 3 of our animals. 1 cat and 2 dogs. None were sedated first and all done with the same vet. Puss, who was 18 and never been to the vet for anything other than desexing was just given the final injection. I think she was so sick she didn’t care. Wasn’t stressed or fussing at all. She passed very quickly and peacefully. Both our dogs, were just given the one injection too. We weren’t offered any sedation for them but I knew they could be if I wanted it but I figured one less needle while they were sick. Neither dog was stressed or anxious. They knew where they were and I believe they knew help was on its way. Our male dog had cancer and was very sick. He didn’t move all day. We waited for the kids to come home from school and my OH home from work so we could all be with him. As we turned into the vets driveway my boy stood up and had the biggest goofiest grin on his face. My OH and I looked at each other and wondered if we were doing the right thing. He passed very quickly with us all there for him. Our little girl, who passed last year, also acknowledged where she was. She had cancer too and was in a bad way, but she loved visiting the “Dr Man “ and as we got near she let out a tiny yap, as if to say, ‘ I know where we are’. She too passed very quickly. Peacefully with my OH and myself talking to her the whole time. We knew it could have happened at our home but we made the decision not too as I just don’t think I could have handled it. Being at the vets, yes we were upset but somehow you hold it together until you get back home. Then you fall apart. Either way it’s tough and each to their own.
  4. Sorry to hear Nash has finally gone. At least it sounds like he went peacefully and on his own terms. And now he is able to run free from pain. My thoughts are with you.
  5. You could try the Greater Springfield Veterinary Hospital at Augustine Heights Very nice friendly staff and are open from 7am - 10pm every day. I will admit I have only used them a couple of times but they treat you and your pet very nicely and seem very thorough. Or you could try Redbank Plains Veterinary surgery in Harris St Bellbird Park. I have used this surgery for about 20 years. Our original vet passed away a few years back but if you ask to see Dr Dan you can’t go wrong.
  6. I once had someone come to buy a puppy from me ( purebred mini schnauzer) and they tried asking for a cheaper price. I stood firm telling them that there were “schnoodles” advertised for more than my purebreds were. They bought my puppy and we are good friends now. Personally I hate seeing cross breeds selling for more than a purebred.
  7. I might be having a “ vague” moment but how can 4 cross breed puppies be worth tens of thousands of dollars. ??? And being sold underage I too would hope there would be an investigation into both parties.
  8. Just for ANZAC day. Photo was taken on our recent trip to Clermont.
  9. I may be biased but a mini schnauzer might fit. They don’t shed hair, very loyal and very intuitive. They love spending time with the family. Small and very robust. I have always owned these and bred quite a few. Those that get the chance love the beach, both sand and water. My little girl is 6 and loves playing ball. The only thing is some can be a bit yappy. But not all and maybe that comes down to training. They also need grooming about every 8 weeks or so but they really do require brushing at least once a week as they are prone to getting knots but if you spend 5 minutes once a week it’s really not a problem. They are highly intelligent and personally I love them and wouldn’t be without. Good luck with your choice.
  10. Happy birthday little fella. It’s nice to hear good stories of dogs living to a very old age for a change. Even if his body is a bit rickety. Good on you.
  11. I was thinking because she knows I’m usually a push over with everything. But she was always so much better when Zena was still with us as I always did Zena first and then by the time it was Mollys turn she was eager for a bit of one on one attention. Or that’s at least what it seemed like to me.
  12. Not sure how much Zac weighs but he is just a mini schnauzer and more on the smaller size for a male. Fingers crossed for him and his humans
  13. A photo of one smug, uncooperative, recently groomed (today) Molly. Why is it my own is my worst customer.
  14. Maybe it sounds promising for little Zac too then. Thankyou

    Kaos

Sorry to hear your girl is now gone. Such a hard decision in a terrible situation. My thoughts are with you. At least you can take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace and is comfortable with no pain. Look after yourself and the kids now. Take care. RIP Kaos
  16. Wow. Thanks for your info. Sorry to hear things ended badly. Not nice. Apparently little Zac was diagnosed quickly. It just happened one morning he woke up and couldn’t walk and was in a lot of pain. No prior symptoms I don’t think. His blood tests are all good now though. He is on cortisone. He is usually such an energetic little guy but has been very lethargic although they are seeing some improvement in him. I haven’t seen him in a while so I can’t make any comments and don’t know the total full story. He is on a diet of meat broth and cooked meat and they are trying Chinese herbs also. They are hoping to have him off the medication in about 6 months. Hopefully theirs is a success story. Will keep updating here when I receive more information.
  17. All the best for this afternoon. Thinking of you all. Hugs to Kaos.
  18. I love the whole set up. Absolutely brilliant. Good job. Happy puppies.
  19. It’s nice that you have a decent vet who can tell you how it is but what a difficult situation. As P says maybe sooner rather than later but I don’t know if I could make that call. Although watching a dog fade and look so sad with cancer isn’t great either. Deep down we know that we have to think about how our little friends are feeling and that usually the decision made will be what is technically the right one. I certainly feel for you. Hugs to you and yours. Take care and roll on Monday when you can talk to your vet.
  20. That’s tough news. Poor Kaos
  21. Don’t know if this really counts as technically he’s not my dog. One of Mollys pups ( almost 2 now) frequently comes and stays with us and whenever he sees my mother in law, ( who lives in a granny flat off our house) he barks so loudly and even though we try to stop him he just won’t. So she tends to stay away. I love that boy
  22. A friend of mine owns a mini schnauzer, who is almost 2 years old. He has just been diagnosed with immune mediated poly arthritis. I have never heard about this before. I googled it and kind of understand what it is. I would just like to know if others have dealt with this and what is the dogs prognosis.
  23. Another feathered friend from our Clermont trip.
  24. LOL. ...... of course being a schnauzer, in comes half the yard.
