  1. I haven't seen her since the Christmas show so I don't know if she has received her paperwork yet. As at 18th December she hadn't received it, then Dogs NSW went on holidays for 3 weeks so she may have received it within the last couple of weeks. Yes the dog is still being shown and has received a few more BIG's since October, so we may see some more Non reg-registered import's in the NS group results. Is there an avenue for the owner to put in a complaint and get the BIG's awarded? (seeing as it is Dogs NSW own fault that they oculdnt get the paperwork dont in the time frame that they themselves set out)? It seems quite unfair otherwise
  2. I considered giving up when I was told that to survive and to win I would have to toughen up. I agree wholeheartedly with using sports psychology to explain what is happening to a newbie. I'd also: - introduce them to as many people with different breeds as possible, so that they can find friends who they wont be competing with - advise them to ignore/avoid the troublemakers - point out that there are plenty of lovely people in dog showing, but they might not stand out as much as the ones behaving badly. I used to play competitive chess, and found it much the same as dog showing in terms of people with bad behaviour. Except I left chess because of the bad behaviour, but I plan to stick with dog showing, having taken my own advice (above) :-)
  3. I then send an SMS to Dingo's phone number. ''Hi, I have found a kelpie 'Dingo' on the road. He is fine but I have taken him to [suburb] vet.'' Later that day an SMS comes in return: ''Next time mind your own business. He knows where his home is but you took him 2km from it.'' OMG I hope the reporter contacted DAS to report the dog and owner! I am forever taking stray dogs to the pound or taking them home and ringing the owner (which is what I hope someone would do if my dogs ever got out - take them to a safe place where I can find them). I have yet to have anyone who was happy with my actions . It never fails to suprise me - I would be sobbing with tears of joy if someone rang to tell me they had picked up my wandering pooch and made him/her safe. One person even used Freedom of Information to try and find out who had taken her dog to the pound, so that she could have a go at me!
  4. You're all just jealous and wish that your big dogs could get away with this too
  5. LOL this was a scene in the Pink Panther with Peter Sellers too
  6. Not very good service! (unless there was something wrong with the paperwork). When I re-registered by NZ import, I had the paperwork back from Dogs ACT in under two weeks. BTW I would have had no idea that I had to re-register my dog with ANKC as I had his NZ pedigree in my name. So I guess others are making the same mistake too You do need to hold the pedigree and have the pedigree in your name before you exhibit. Look at how many results have been made illegitimate by the ineligible dog. Shame the new owner didn't attend the RNSWCC office and pay for the speed service (if they have that). Unfortunately she lives too far away for that to be a viable option... However, I believe she should have registered the dog with Dogs ACT, as she did with her last litter, due to problems that she seems to encounter with Dogs NSW
  7. I have been seeing "non re-registered import' in NSW show results in many journals over the last year. I dont understand how a dog can be entered into a show without current ANKC registration? I guess nothing as sophisticated as a centralised database for dog registrations has been set up for show secretaries to use yet.
  8. The Batemans Bay council has a pamphlet showing their dog friendly beaches. Perhaps ring and ask for it to be sent out. I have not found anywhere really suitable though, as when I last holidayed there, the only dog-friendly beaches were either pebbly, small and near the road or very rough surf beaches.
  9. I use Exit Odour for the washing machine. It is fantastic!!!! (I love their hard surface spray too - you only need a tiny bit in a bucket or spray bottle) http://www.catonam.com.au/p_odour.php I dont know what postage to Qld would be, but do know that it is much more cost effective to buy the 5L container than the 1L one ps stockist list here http://www.catonam.com.au/products/eostockists.pdf Seems like it is available from show vans in northern NSW, which may be OK for brissy exhibitors.
  10. Thanks for your replies everyone. I had x-rays done today, and no puppies
  11. Thanks ozmalinois. Where are the puppies located in cases when they cant be seen or felt? I cant imagine where there would be room for them!
  12. Thanks everyone. I will be interesting to see if my girl suddenly blows up with one week to go. She has been very sooky for the past 6 weeks, and more sedate than normal, but no sign of pups! What does the term 'carried them high up' mean? Wouldnt their internal organs be squished if the pups were not low in the abdoment (and bulging out the sides!)
  13. I have a bitch here who was mated, and if pregnant, would be 7 weeks this coming weekend. She doesn't look pregnant at all (although she is a bit thicker around the waist than she was 6 weeks ago, but that could be because I have been feeding her favourite foods). So this got me thinking, has anyone had bitches who were pregnant, but hid it until well into the pregnancy, and if so, when did they start to show? Gail
  14. I spoke to t-time this morning. They have minor flooding and lightning damage but they are OK. No power or phone though, and they are cut off. (outside Brisbane)
  15. So you think that because ALL possible conditions cant be detected, that we should just not bother with trying to eliminate any of them ;) . This seems like a cop-out to me.
  16. I havent read the replies so sorry if I duplicate info. I have the same problem with my Havanese (even in winter, as I have ducted heating!) so they sleep on 'waterbeds' year round, unless it gets really cold. I have the Canine Cooler beds from Deals direct, and my dogs love them (http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/p/canine-cooler-pet-bed-1/) Gail
  17. No Havanese either One interesting thing ... I hadn't heard of a Biewer Terrier before! Off to google ...
  18. Ditto. Hereditary conditions in wheatens wouldn't show up on a vet exam. Both my wheatens pedigrees are 'littered' with pedigrees champion dogs listed on the open register of affected dogs as sire, dam, littermate of a dog that has died of a hereditary disease. A vet exam is meaningless. The vet check in the UK is only for 15 breeds that have problems that can be detected by a vet. I may need my flame suit, but I am glad of the steps being taken, and wouldn't mind seeing it implemented here. I dont like seeing dogs changed in ways that are detrimental to their health. I also dont like the presentation expectations of show dogs being such that the dog cant live a quality life and meet the standards. But I dont see that anything will be done about this in the near future. The opposite seems to be occurring in Australia as we follow the US trends of dog showing and opt for more, longer and shinier coat!
  19. I don't want to be judgemental so I won't. Rules require a set of .. ovaries, in the dog or bitch. There is no allowance for a 'spirit of the law ' re-reading of this rule. Really? Can you copy the relevant rule here please?
  20. As soon as I put him on the table he generally sits down as I am trying to stack him. He already has a lovely stack, I just thought maybe if I trained him on the stackers he wouldn't be able to sit down!!!! If he sits down on the stackers he will fall, therefore after a couple of times on the stackers he would learn to stand up and once you get him standing nice and still on the stackers in theory he should stand on the table no worries Show stackers are to teach the dog the desired position of a 'stand'. The point of them is NOT to punish the dog when they break position by have them falling off!! Nor are they meant to be used teach dogs to stand. No wonder many people are against these sort of tools when they are misused so easily. If your aim is to punish the dog for sitting down, there are plenty of ways to do this without equipment, however I wouldnt recommend this type of training if you want your dog to enjoy showing. I dont see why you cant teach a 'stand' command using rewards. Start on the ground, then work up to the table. It might also help to find out why your dog sits on the table. If he is unsure of being at that height try and overcome this with plenty of training that involves fun time on the table, or maybe starting on low tables then increasing the height. Maybe he thinks that he is supposed to sit on the table. If so you can give your stand command, and if necessary gently put him in a stand position, or walk him into a stand position, and reward him, then gently support him underneat to keep him standing while he is examined. Maybe he doesn't like being close to the edge of the table, so may stand if you set him up further back. Etc etc! There are plenty of things to try before you need to consider punishment. I was shocked when I started showing at how often I saw dogs being punished . It seems like the majority of exhibitors just expect their dog to know what to do, and if they happen to get it wrong, the handler punishes the dog physically or verbally . I'm not saying that you are like this - but that your dog's breeder might not know about kinder, more effective training methods.
  21. I agree with both of you. And they said it would never happen ....
  22. I am sorry to hear about Zoe. She was one special girl - the dog who taught me what lovely souls staffys can be. Hugs to you and Malcolm Gail
  23. Thanks for replies everyone . I have just arrived home from a weekend of showing. EP was about the same as usual . I want to stress though, that people in my own breed are lovely, and no exhibitor has ever been rude to me in the ring, and I have met a lot of lovely people in Sydney. Yesterday I braved speaking to some other Toy exhibitors and it went well :D . I was sitting on my own, waiting for General specials, and there was a group of Toy people to either side of me, also waiting. We were the only ones under the ring 7&8 shelter, and I stood out like a sore thumb ('BittyMooPeeb No Friends!") sitting bang smack in the middle on my own. So I shuffled closer to one group and made excuses to chat :D Havasneeze, the stewards in the instances I am thinking of were definately deliberately rude! Very OTT behaviour, that changed immediately they got back to an exhibitor they knew!
