I've used the one at Dogworld at Hume. Didn't book. Dryer took longer than I thought on my standard poodle who's a tall dog, thick coat. Was room temp air, but high flow to blast water off- hold close to skin. Apparently is easy to burn/melt hoses with the heated type in inexperienced hands. Didn't take long at all on the miniature poodle. Towels, grooming tools provided. Bath looked clean b4 I used it (mid-morning). BYO shampoo or you can buy some there. Only problem I found washad a fair amount of dog hair that ended up on me (left by other dogs, poodles only shed dead hair when you brush/comb them). eta: Just bought myself a dog dryer. Cost about $400

My 24kg dog decided to try some, but I'm not sure he ate any/ much. I just found the shells in a mess and broken open- no obvious problems and that was 5 days ago.

It's a drug widely given to both humans and dogs. Any drug can have side effects. I was at all worried, would discuss with vet and/or take dog back to vet to be examined. It can be hard to separate a side effect from the disease/ infection/ problem the drug is prescribe to treat. Beware the internet diagnosis!

I use a Dremel- you will see the "quick" on the nail (underneath) and even if you do grind into it, it won't bleed very much at all. "Doberdawn" shows you exactly how to do it: http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/dob...mel/dremel.html The smaller, cheaper Dremel probably is best for small dogs only. Dremel's just the brand name (made in Mexico). "Ozito" is another brand- does the same thing.

Can Flea/tick Treatment Cause Seizures?
Poodle wrangler replied to poodle proud's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I haven't had any problems with using Advantix or Frontline on my poodles. I used to live on the coast, I treated them fortnightly for paralysis tick. I found Advantix better for flea control (? fleas resistant to Frontline in my area?) Hope your dogs are fine. Guess it's a matter of changing brands to exclude this as the cause of problems. -
Yes, the xrays do "belong" to the vet. Doesn't sound right, but this is the case. If you have a good vet and go back, you WANT them to have the Xrays as part of the dog;'s medical history. Similar story with medical records when you go to hospital. I asked to "borrow" them to show the breeder and they said yes. I took them back after a couple of days. I took photos of them (using an Xray board). When I moved interstate, I asked the vet if I could have the XRays and they gave them to me as a goodwill thing.

I think I need to bath Charlie the standard poodle in some Malaseb and force dry him. I'm not sure that I have enough time to get to Dogworld (southside) tomorrow. Anywhere on the northside? Something's causing him to itch since he picked up fleas over 10 days ago. Treated fleas with Capstar X2 doses last week, treated other dog, too, who's stopped itching. Vacuumed etc. Both dogs on Sentinel, also. Am waiting on some Revolution to be delivered to cover possible mites (??). Thanks

Hip Dysplasia - Alternative Treatments
Poodle wrangler replied to tira_mia's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
*Keep your dog a lean weight (can feel ribs easily with the flat of your hand) Less weight places less stress on joints. * Gentle exercise ..swimming being ideal... if impractical then perhaps regular, shorter walks on leash (to avoid sudden jumping/ changing directions etc.) Building the muscles around the joint can help support the joint. Some gentle movement is better than total inactivity for CHRONIC joint issues like arthritis in humans. *Warmth. Maybe a heated bed? Bring dog indoors if normally outside at night etc. Problem with hips is that it is a mechanical issue- the parts just don't fit together properly. It's hard to know what's working when your dog can't talk, either. Many dogs are more stoic than we'd be with the same pain. Best wishes with your dog -
I'm still looking and trying to get well under $400. http://www.clipperworld.com.au/shop/index....p;productId=287 or http://www.clipperworld.com.au/shop/index....p;productId=287 My standard poodle has quite a thick coat. Took about an hour to dry him with the force dryer at the DIY hydrobath place. Like the idea of the plastic ones as when we move back to the coast, everything in the garage rusts. Thanks

Diabetes Diagnosis For Older Dog
Poodle wrangler replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The needles are quite small and easy to give, if that's any consolation. No real alternative other than the dog die from the diabetes (go into coma+ die?), PTS, or give injections. -
Anyone Else Order Dog Drugs From Pharmacy?
Poodle wrangler replied to Loraine's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep. Can use many human drugs for dogs, but I always check with the vet and adjust dose for dog's size. -
From what I can tell, heat or not depends on the particular model. I've just moved to Canberra and thought wet poodles will freeze in winter. Also, backyard is largely dirt due to dying grass (water restrictions). Whole house has carpet and I'll have to bath/ shower Charile (the 24kg standard0 upstairs. No problem with carrying a mini out wrapped in towel, but 24kg wet poodle a bit different. Thanks for advice, guys !

Sorry. Will have another go ..... Poodles SHOULD be fluff dried for the best finish. I thought you needed a stand dryer to fluff dry, so you have 2 hands free to do this?? Or, a groomers "third arm" (but I have no table to attach to)? Finish isn't that important to me as both are pets. As long as I can dry right thru the coat while holding the nozzle of a force dryer with one hand? Am new to this dryer thing
-
Is for a mini and standard poodle. Normally keep coat short: #5 body. Will a force-type dryer be OK? Can you dry their coat all the way thru without 3 arms? Standard poodle will need to be standing on floor to be dried (big grooming table won't fit). Need something smaller (it will have to be packed away b/w washes)

My 7kg mini poodle can eat any food, but the 24kg standard is a different story. Supercoat produced very runny poos. Great Barko: OK, though not that keen on it (a hungry dog will eat, though!). Bonnie Working Dog: Good (he needed a bit of extra weight on and is active). Purina One: Very good, but is pricier for a supermarket food (better if the dog's a small breed and eats less). I add raw meaty bones/ chicken necks/ chicken carcasses etc. too.

Cavs are similar size to mini poodles and my dog was overweight at 8KG . If she's willing to see the problem, I'd suggest HALVING the amount of food. A dog that fat probably wouldn't tolerate much exercise, but very short walks might be OK ONLY if the dog's health/ joints are up to it . I cut my dog's food in half until he was back to being fighting fit. It looks like you're feeding hardly anything at all, but you have to remember they are small dogs and need very little food. A handful of table scraps is more than a meal for a dog that size! My dog started to slow down on walks when only a little overweight- this poor dog at >18kg. It was obvious he had more energy (NOT over-energetic/ misbehaving) at a nice, lean weight.

I use a sterile syringe, sterile container and make up very small batches- about 40ml each time. Store in the fridge. Seems to work fine. I use the syringe first to measure up the 1ml of Malaseb, then to squirt into ear- being REALLY careful do "no touch" (so clean syringe doesn't touch dirty ear). I agree that room-temperature is better, I'm guessing dog body temp is best, but I often use it straight out of the fridge without apparent ill effect. BTW only one poodle here tends to get smelly ears, other is fine

Goldie Smells Of Balsam
Poodle wrangler replied to fourbouy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Could it be leftover shampoo?? I've done this myself after thinking I'd rinsed it all out. Rinse, rinse, rinse and if you're in the shower use a hose to get to skin level. Brushing right down to the skin is advised, then follow up with a comb. You'll see any problems asap that way as well as avoiding knots. A knotted coat doesn't "breathe" very well. Some people suggest adding fish oils to the diet for dry skin/ allergies- either cheap sardines from the supermarket (oily fish) or capsules. -
One Rotund Boy
Poodle wrangler replied to Stewie_the_Frenchie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a bit of a weight problem with one of my dogs- the 7kg one was stealing food off the 25kg one! Needless to say, Mr 7kg put on weight. Cut the food intake by half. At 8 years old, does he have any arthritis that limits his exercise? Your new dog will be hungry on "rations", but that's fine. It's far worse to be a fat, old dog- is very hard on ageing joints I'd separate the dogs at mealtimes to avoid fights AND so you know exactly who's eating what. Kongs have no calories. Good luck with your new boy! -
In the first post, you've only had the dog for a week- it's really early days. I love dogs and even I occasionally thought, "What have I done?" when our dog (then pup) peed, poohed and vomited in the house. I should add the vomiting was only once and toilet training is all sorted within weeks if you all put in the hard work. If you can't supervise the dog, the dog goes outside where it can wee/poo wherever. Poodle puppies have sharp teeth, too . The teeth on my big poodle are almost as big as a GSD's too.

Need Help With 18 Month Old Lab Puppy
Poodle wrangler replied to loonylabowner's topic in Puppy Chat
You can get the kids to do basic training like "sit". Use food as a reward- a great reward for hungry labs- and you'll be successful quickly. Unfortunately, unless you also train kids and hubby, the dog will be confused by the mixed messages he receives. Kids and hubby must be "rewarding" the bad behaviour in some way?? Dogs also have a knack of knowing if you secretly think their misbehaviour is kinda cute- and will misbehave accordingly Check out TOT. Something you can do yourself:http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=64101. Print it out and do it for one meal a day, at least. -
Lung Tumors And Breathing Difficulties
Poodle wrangler replied to cowanbree's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Has she been to the vet recently? Perhaps it is possible to do something (antibiotics? drain?) to make her breathing more comfortable? Is so hard to know what they feel . Humans can certainly have horrid sounding lungs and be severely restricted in what they can do (e.g walk only 5m), but adapt to some extent. -
Should Food Be Avaliable All The Time?
Poodle wrangler replied to charlies_mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't do it because both my dogs tend to overeat and we get an ant problem with food left out. Is no problem to leave food out as long as your dog is a healthy weight. One of my dog's breeders leaves dry food out for her dogs to graze all day and all are healthy (i.e. lean) weight. She also feeds raw for "meals". -
Pill Or Capsule Sizes For Small Dogs?
Poodle wrangler replied to bingo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My cunning mini poodle (hates tablets) can easily eat any human sized capsule. Easiest thing is to hide it inside some mince meat- give it, then follow up quickly with a couple of "normal" pieces of mince. Also wait until he'll be hungry. He's so eager to get more mince, he doesn't worry about spitting out the offending tablet. -
Pet Shop Adds Via Dol
Poodle wrangler replied to sandgrubber's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've seen similar things pop up on breeder's websites, too e.g. google ads for "oodles" on purebred poodles' websites.
