High percentage of cavs don't come into rescue until they have mammary tumours, green teeth and a shot heart. They are less likely to be the brand new healthy shiny ones snapped up in pounds and gumtree.

Yes, I asked my vet why is it so hard to keep their teeth free of tarter, his reply, "they are bred with shockingly misaligned teeth. They are incapable of keeping their teeth tater free no how much you give them teeth cleaning chews. Has to be removed manually."

as it is now to the point that " The number of diagnosed cases in cavaliers has increased dramatically since 2000. Researchers estimate that more than 95% of cavaliers have CM and over 50% may have SM. The severity and extent of syringomyelia also appear to get worse in each succeeding generation of cavaliers. It is worldwide in scope and not limited to any country, breeding line, or kennel, and experts report that it is believed to be inherited in the cavalier. )."

That's not even without counting the incidence of MV.  Its heartbreaking for such an adorable breed.

"The incidence of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is particularly high in some breeds such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) with as many as 90% developing this pathology by the age of 10 years"

The majority are on medication before 7, to think 20 years ago I had three lived to 14 and 17 MV free.

my sisters 2 were diagnosed at 6 gone at 7 and diagnosed at 6 gone at 9.

they have tried to compromise by  getting a cavoodle this time, he's only 2 so time will tell.

  2. Ever WONDERED why you couldn't find an add you know is listed?  that's just one breed. Yes a percentage can be found in more than one of the listings but many aren't.

As well looking at the numbers the pounds should be full of them too since it amounts to in actuality 1,896 listings for Australia.  this is just one website, gumtree, as we know there are many more.

Dont think much of your chances of finding a cavalier at the pound, well not for long anyway.

    So?

We all suspect the answer to that anyway.

There IS A REASON the pounds are full of one types and not the the other's.  They can be a real problem if not properly trained. Isn't that about when, "blame the deed not the breed" was coined?

    Hello!
I have a 10month old Dachshund puppy. He is long haired but both his parents are short haired. They were obviously both carrying the long haired gene hence why he came out the way he did :)
His hair has grown a bit but no way near as long as other dogs his age. I was wondering if anyone has seen a full grown dachshund that has short haired parents, and can tell me how long/fluffy I can expect my pups hair to be?

    Pictures would be great too!

never bred dachshund's but have bred chihuahua's and when you get a long coat its a total lottery what kind of coat your going to get, long short, aka my brothers boy Chip, he had long fluffy pants on his back legs and down the backs of his front legs. big fluffy ruff around his neck and glorious fluffy tail and ears, the rest of him head and body were just slightly longer than a smoothcoat.  Genie my girl was all longcoat all over her but it did lay flat.  Once had a puppy born, not only longcoat but so fluffy my vet thought he was a purebred Pomeranian . Another girl Leia her coat was just like a Papillion, even had the long butterfly hairs on her ears.

so perhaps there is as much variation in longcoat Dachshund's too?

It's interesting that it still seems to be the same breeds. Bull types, working dogs, some large purebreds and the odd terrier. Why do people insist on overbreeding bull types?

because they are wanted by so many, a bull breed at your side shows your tough,  most of the puppies im asked to chip because it was sold not chipped is a bullie, usually an AM Staff/ pit bull, NOT that they want u to put pit bull, "its an Am Staff"  why? because they are legal , and most when I ask for the immunisation certificate?   nup dont have that either. tell they need to get it to the vet ASAP as it could already have parvo and be at risk of death is the only way to get them to take it to the vet.

tell them their puppy breeder has broken the law and they cant get gone fast enough. which is fine by me, no immunisation card? no chip mate! Get to your vet.   NOW!

the true back yard breeder sourced puppies

Although once the new 2 litters only per bitch come in, its only going to be back yard breds will be to be found and most of them will be bullies.

  6. I was visiting my brother yesterday, he is a Peter Brock Fan and has two vintage Holden's.  He saw a yellow Toyota Torana GTR identical to the first car he ever owned and decided he has to go back to his childhood and bought it.  Soo at least one of the Holden's has to go.

What on earth has that to do with dog's you ask?

    Well nothing in one way.

BUT! Although the Brock Holden's always before, sold like hotcakes if one was for sale.

Well that is  until this year.

He has discovered no one is buying now.

I was told three years ago we are heading for a depression worse than the one my parents knew.

I know someone else with a rare as hen's teeth Bathurst King of the mountain model Nissan GTR factory perfect low, low mileage valued at over half a million and has turned down numerous offers from here and from overseas.  Decided to accept the last offer as needs to retire and needs the money.  So what's happened to the offer too good to refuse?  the potential buyer changed his mind the day the transfer was to go through and now advertised for sale, not one call?   Neither from here or overseas, not a peep.

Maybe, just maybe, people are beginning to realise and ceasing spending on all things?

Apparently house prices are doing a dive as well

If its true, we better buckle up for a rough ride.

Although employment wise there are thousands of jobs vacant, business's are closing because they cant find staff?

on Landline last night, they talked about what I have already seen, the hospital system is broken, so short staffed nurses and doctors are burning out trying to reduce the backlog waiting times. but when your missing 48 staff already and more resigning (the figures for Griffith hospital alone) but the city hospital's are in the same boat.  apparently almost 3,000 nurses and doctors are waiting for visas' to be able to come here.  The waiting time so far is 16 months?

millions of tons of fruit are falling to the ground because there is no one to pick them.

The next year's will see many changes that COVID was just the beginning I suspect

Im not saying that smashing the skull of Joey is not cruel, I just wonder why they support some cruelty but not this example.

pay up for the rspca appoved logo or!

Having gone out with two professional roo shooters, I can vouch out of an average of 150 per night.

there were over ten roos for every sheep we saw any given night.

The shooters never shot any but the biggest, so only fully adult males and only a very few of the biggest females. in a week and some 750 harvested they only made one mistake and found a tiny joey in the pouch, which yes, was killed immediately.

The most chilling, was every roo was dispatched with a single shot just below n behind the ear, not one miss,  not one didn't drop dead on the spot. Think on that!  Never want a roo shooter to decide to go berserk like the so called Strathfield massacre all those decades ago. no one would have been left alive.

Had nightmares for months when I realised the implications. No wonder aussie men from the land were such deadly snipers in WW1 and WW2.

Makes you wonder what butchers the NPWS are sending out to gut and neck shoot the brumbies left to bleed to death in Kosiosko national park?  RSPCA APPROVED INCIDENTLY??????????????????

Another couple would bring in 250 a night, they  only worked three days a week, they said the tax man got the rest if they brought in more.  The size of all brought in was from big to massive.  as both said, waste of a bullet on the medium and smaller.   So? the farmers hand over their cull tags and the shooters get the meat price from the processers.

The farmers? still stuck with thousands of fertile females and young fertile males to keep the population up to grow and mature until they catch up in weight and size to qualify for the harvesters mental scales.

I think the farmer is the loser no matter how you look at it. pays for the property, the rates and cannot harvest the meat being grown on his land if it hop's!  There's more of them than the cattle and sheep. once they have stripped the paddocks or crops the fences are nothing to them as they move on to better pastures. In times of drought?  All starve but the domestic stock then have to fight the roo's for the hay and pellets.

My hubby has our cattle trained for the drought times. he drives into the paddock to where the cattle can see the truck then he puts out a bucket for  for each of the cattle that they can eat quickly as well he stands between them and the roos as they arrive.

as for crops? forget it unless its a bumper year and too much for them to destroy it all.  Living beside a national park is a nightmare

Those who can get the finance these days are boundary fencing with  roo/deer exclusion fences

  9. interesting, there are figures to be found.

in 2019-2020 financial year. From the Australian population of 25.69 million (2020)

In 2020: More than 1 in 2 (54% or 70,000) recorded assaults were related to family and domestic violence (excluding Victoria and Queensland), a 7.8% increase from 65,000 in 2019. Almost 2 in 5 (37% or 82) recorded murders were related to family and domestic violence (ABS 2021).7 July 2022

Note it states these figures are (excluding Victoria and Queensland) no idea how to find out what they are considering the population in both these states? the actual figures for all states could be double.

True that the majority of pet owners dont like or trust their own species, by the above figures, with good reason.

(But do we want all humans extinct to solve the problem?)

    Complaints lodged with RSPCA

ACT       NSW       QLD       SA         TAS      VIC         WA     TOTAL

    Investigated   1,304    14,425    18,260    4,139    2,171    10,745    6,866    57,910

There were,   304 Successful rspca prosecutions. The same year there were 396 domestic violence victims of homicide and related offences including murder, attempted murder and manslaughter.

    So?

no hysteria about stamping out domestic violence comes even within cooee of the never ceasing calls to protect our pets from the  assumed mass of abusers?

DV website, first thing it does is warn you how to erase your browsing history for this site in case your partner accesses your computer?

  10. spotted on face plant. This woman created PETA on 22nd March 1980.

She has worked tirelessly for all that 42 years  to achieve the extinction of our dogs and cats, as well every other domestic species is on their agenda for extinction.

every other animal rights group has the same agenda even if they do not realise they are part of peta agenda.

     301128674_10160996913728825_254143778682

The question now is it too late for the few who have woken up that the end is almost achieved and so far there is only one group  who have realised this, has formed a political party to fight for our companion animals.

I just never fail to be amazed how blind pet owners have been to the agenda of "we must eliminate puppy farmers" had nothing to do with protecting our dogs and cats but all about sending them extinct, even now so few understand that is the net result of strangulation laws that have been passed.

Everyone is so keen to make laws to "protect our pets" and assume everyone else is a potential cruelty case?

Yet remaining blind to the real agenda is the intended future is NO PETS!   ALL extinct?  I know of no one who wants a future with no pets, when will they wake up before its too late the decades of of harsher laws is not for the benefit of our animals at all?

Reminds me of the quote Alma at Kelvinator had on her office wall.

    • All the world  is queer save thee and me, and even thou art a little queer.

YET! Where is the zeal to protect targets of domestic violence? more than one a week is killed year in year out? "There were 370 victims of homicide and related offences – which includes murder, attempted murder and manslaughter – recorded in Australia in 2021. This was a decrease of 7% (26 victims) from the previous year."

Even though so many think animal cruelty happens on a massive scale the facts are the rspca prosecute a fraction of that number!   Where is the will to create stronger laws against domestic violence?

The human race is a very strange species

    Post-legged
When there is insufficient angle between the tibia and cannon bone (hock) and tibia and femur (stifle), the increased stress on tendons and ligaments can cause bog spavin, bone spavin, and osteoarthritis in the hock. This type of hock is easily injured during hard work because of strain on the flexor tendon and upper part of the suspensory ligament. Locked stifles may also occur, as the straight stifle joint causes the patella (kneecap) to slip out of position, ‘locking’ the leg. As it travels, the post-legged horse tends to stab its hind feet into the ground at each stride, leading to cracked hooves, bruised soles, and other hoof problems related to excessive concussion.

  13. I feel it brought to light the sad fact show people morph their chosen breed in the chase to win at the expense of the breeds health and well being, labeling the changes as "improving" the breed.

Those who tried to point out this not not fair on the animals were ignored. At best.

Labled as puppy farmers and persecuted to resign their membership at worst. The message being, walk to the same beat or get out before your pushed.

Sadly that doco was the only thing to bring it to the attention of the world in the worst possible way, but many pet owners were already very unhappy with the changes happening, it is so strange that the show breeders seem unable to understand morphing, is not "improving"  .

as for the breeder who told me she "would never keep second best just because it had no hernias, when they are not a disqualification and anyway, I doubt you will find a hernia free cavalier within 10 years!" Because of her attitude all her dogs had hernia's?  Ok she had many generations of champions, But how on earth is that maintaining the breed?

so many breeds today are riddled with hernia's because so many have the same attitude.  That's just one that the show scene ignores to the detriment to the quality of life of the individuals they breed. Meanwhile oblivious to the pet owning public being appalled at how hard it is to find a puppy without the problem.

so many things in pups bred for the show scene the pet people dont want to see in their pup.   The show world was already alienating people long before Pedigree dogs exposed went to air.

The list is long, is enough time left to rectify?

at lest its not just dogs the show scene has morphed

  14. as for the present mindset of dead end kennels, its been a long progression to the mess we are witnessing today.

It began with the establishment of peta , took me a while to learn of their existence but the time line fits, along with after meeting some members, I realised where the "we have to get rid of puppy farmers" came from.  My ankc breeder friends began parroting it in the 80's and by 1990's many were busy dialing the rspca and council rangers to dob in any member they decided were puppy farmers in the hope the harassment and stress would elicit a prosecution, in which case they could then report to the ankc and the targets membership cancelled.   Most resigned to escape the harassment. The timing was perfect as the attitude of the rspca was subtly at first, then radically changing  to the ruthless pursuit of profit that is now rspca inc we now have to contend with.

No ankc's countered the avalanche of awful photos of skeletal bitches with puppies sucking the life out of them that is supposed to be the fate of any bitch bred from , let alone more than one litter a year.   the landslide of laws to "eliminate puppy farms" has done exactly the opposite?

Instead only puppy farms that can afford the costs,  but in all this time no definition of what is a puppy farm has ever been done.

Meanwhile those left has declined by the thousands annually.

The end is pretty close if even Peta went public in 2021 that they anticipate "the extinction of the domestic dog and cat within this generation". with plans to eliminate all domestic animals.  That has been the agenda for over 30 years.   The pet owning public and every one involved with pets has been deaf and blind to the unfolding  agenda.

what may prevent the anticipated "extinction" is the millions of people who are "backyard" breeders members of no organisation so untraceable.

Sometimes despite best breeding and puppy-raising you can have an anxious dog for whom those hormones are important for behavioural wellness.

interesting, decades ago I had a young stallion who was incredibly anxious about mares, he just was not coping with his hormones,  an experimental injection to chemically castrate colts for the racing industry was asking for people willing to have their colts treated in return for input on the results.   signed him up and another really quiet colt as well.  the improvement in the nervous boy was remarkable, even took him riding with the pony club kids n he didn't have a clue he was a colt anymore.

when it wore off, in his case 11 months later he remained content.

the quiet colt had no changes noticeable, but then it was to be expected. The aim was to keep the oversexed colts mind on the job for racing so they did not have to be castrated and their genetics lost if they proved their worth on the track.

the once anxious boy was done twice more over  a 15 year period to ascertain any changes in how long the injection worked and any changes to fertility after it wore off. he was still fully fertile at 27.

Very interesting research to be part of

Um,  not quite true. The older either of the parents are, the more genetic defects. In humans, the older the father the more likely the child will develop schizophrenia or other mental heath issues and the older the mother, the greater probability of Downs Syndrome or other genetic defects. The bottom line is younger eggs and sperm are generally healthier. If you want to cover your bets, you collect from the dog when it is young and then wait to see how it turns out.

I knew a beautiful child,  by the time he was 19 he was diagnosed schizophrenic, he was his parents first child so its not the case of only occurring to "the older the father" ditto for a friends son his parents were only 20, he killed himself on his 21st birthday, ditto for my 19 yr old friend.

in the decades before all this crap nanny state legislation deciding the lives of our dogs for us, I never saw a downs syndrome puppy and I knew an awful lot of breeders.

was surfing gumtree this morning,  noticed an add for merle border collie x koolie, as all were smoothcoats in curiosity opened the add.  to discover the only border collie in them was 25%, the rest kelpie and koolie. What really stunned me was both parents were merle??????????

The "breeder" was in no register, the puppies had been "a happy accident"   The very people who are the real suppliers of probably over 80% of puppies today.  Nice to see though that all 7 were microchipped though.

Amazingly lucky that none of them had inherited two copies of the merle gene.

ooo and the majority had sold for $3,000?  the last offered for $1,200

no legislation can touch these people, but nice to see their puppies are microchipped

the father of my brothers chihuahua was 17 years old when he sired him. the entire litter were great.  fact is, older the male the more you know about his health status into maturity, which you have no idea in the young male. ditto for the females.   a catch 22 true

if they are going to ban older dogs why not ban older humans from breeding too?   ah yes that would get them into heaps of hot water

Microchipping has been mandatory for decades, yet the number of unchipped animals in pounds and shelters is still significant. Desexing is also strongly encouraged, and sweetened by offering cheaper council registrations, but the numbers of undesexed and unregistered animals in pounds and shelters is still significant. None of these issues are properly addressed in current OR proposed legislation... basically where the entire system fails is in the policing of the legislation

Many councils have introduced limits on the numbers of various types of animals, yet there are still people who keep more than those numbers - basically, if one doesn't microchip or register their pet, then they can't effectively be traced, can they? The only way to truly get a real idea on the number of pets in any LGA would be to doorknock and insist on seeing/counting all pets... and we know that ain't gonna happen. Again, legislation/policy that can't be effectively policed.

The current enforcement model is to sit and wait for a complaint to be called in by a member of the public, then the authority decides whether it's worth their time or effort to follow up on that complaint. Reactive, not proactive, policing is a flawed model that is obviously not working, yet those responsible for drafting animal welfare legislation continue to stick their heads in the sand with regards to even attempting to fix the problem... instead, in order to be seen to be "doing something", they just impose even more draconian rules that only make it harder for those actually doing the right thing, but those who aren't will still operate as normal, flying under the radar.

The simple truth is that the current system that relies on a third party charity to cover all policing of legislation is not working. The proposed new NSW legislation offers a paltry sum of money to help fund same, but why throw money at a system that clearly doesn't work? What is actually needed is a complete overhaul of how we police our animal welfare laws... and it should NOT be done by a 3rd party charity organisation, rather it should be done by a truly independent agency that has no stake in the industry it is tasked with policing. Any policing agency should also be fully accountable for any overstepping of powers... say an ombudsman or the like.

Introducing more laws that can't or won't be policed is a waste of time, effort, and money. Simple truth.

I just realised as I was replying  to the other thread.

The pounds and rescues are providing the evidence that registered  traceable breeders are not the problem.

that strangling them is doing nothing to stem the tide of unchipped dogs and kittens filling them

Because they are coming from people who do not consider they are a breeder and never obey the law, yet what they created  was born, so it had a mum and a dad.  so technically it was bred, even a cloned puppy is still carried and born to a surrogate mum.

BUT since the majority THAT END UP IN POUNDS OR RESCUE dont  have a chip, it actually cannot have come from a "breeder" as by law ALL BREEDERS  must microchip EVERY puppy or kitten before it goes to its new home.

its been law for over 30 years last I looked  yet obviously not happening to the majority born to the real people flooding the pounds and rescues, who believe they are "non breeders"??????????????  Therefore the microchipping legislations does not apply to them.

an oxymoron if ever there was one

    Has any?

Politician busy drafting laws the invisibles will never comply with, been advised of this well documented,  inescapable fact?

Do they mean ‘breeders’ as in just not from rescue organisations? Anyone who ‘breeds’ their dog and sells the pups?

only god knows the answer to that one, it was born, so it had a mum and a dad.  so technically it was bred, even a cloned puppy is still carried and born to a surrogate mum.
