  1. Don't know. I did miss the first five minutes. But I did think they would be competent, what I've seen they don't know which way is up, either with lighting or exposure. But will keep on with it and see. Dick Smith knows more than they do so far. You'd think they'd have done a bit of homework or something, even just on posing, control of subject, putting them at ease or giving them confidence instead of the subjects taking over, taking control. Quite strange. But results might not reflect what I'm seeing, they could be brilliant. Anyone else - before it gets more towards finished?
  2. Anniek just so truly sorry. Rest in Peace good dog Cowboy.
  3. Another photo opportunity of note for moon/stars/planets watchers. It's a major event, observing the Transit of Venus is what Captain Cook was doing at this end of the ocean, and after this Wednesday it won't happen again for over 100 years. Main things to remember, if you look at it without eye protection you wreck your optic nerve, if you point a DSLR at it without lens protection you cook the sensor. If you want to take shots it's very do-able but needs a strong filter, something like a welder's visor opacity, for both self and camera. Google finds them. Bit about the Transit on Australian Geographic site - time and place etc. http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/2012-transit-of-venus-best-places-in-australia-to-see-it.htm Nasa will be live-streaming the view of it from their side.
  4. Enjoy them as always - but ha that last one - !!! and they say fish don't think or have a sense of humour!
  5. Hope it goes well for you, speedlights are just great, mine are a bit older, the 600 and 800. (Make sure they include the book of words when you pick it up). I've only used Michaels, cnr Eliz and Lonsdale for rentals. They were extra helpful with advice and recommendations for lenses, good service. Over the east side, Camera House in Croydon rent, including full studio lighting kits.
  6. I am a back-up nerd and have the still-maxed credit card to prove it. I have been insulted by experts and don't let it get to me (that includes someone on this forum bagging me on another forum, subtle not!!). Better photographers than me have left this forum because they they didn't enjoy the unveiled comments. I agree with kja's take. I understand Tess32's situation. We are a small group, we can't afford to undermine one another either directly or by inference, the forum is widely read and it reflects badly. I've put the kettle on the kitchen stove (yay, a real wood-fired cooker) and cyber coffee is coming for anyone who'd enjoy.
  7. That would always be lovely to see kja, even new moon or whatever phase. Been enjoying your under-wateries, lovely.
  8. What a hoot!!! Let's not get enmeshed in an is-it-photoshopped debate. (But is it photoshopped? Yup). Fun shots, clever concept and work.
  9. The same here, I can drive home past Bell's Swamp now, it has interesting reflections. The road had been flooded just ages and we had to 'go round' until the last few weeks.
  10. I had the snots for forgetting and was going to leave it, but there was some interesting cloud around so couldn't resist. First one before it came u into the cloud band, and one looking a bit Halloween-ish.
  11. Meant to mention earlier, now a bit late although it looks good. There was some media heads-up about it this morning, said it was closest in its path and would appear bigger and brighter than usual. Had every intention of driving up the hill to get a moonrise shot, and forgot, bother. Did anyone who saw it early notice anything special, take any shots?
  12. Lovely shot Perseph. How far from home do you have to travel to see this - handy or a long drive?
  13. Marketing is a huge issue, I don't think any of those sites "sell" without the photographer also doing a lot of self promotion/marketing/advertising whatever to back it up. Which takes time on its own. We put time into personal service, never sell anything via the hosting sites, Smugmug, flickr, Pbase whatever. Just invite personal contact and take it from there, use a prolab for prints and use a local quality framer for framed orders. Put a high enough price to make doing the post-packaging worthwhile. I'd like to see the Alain Briot DVD out of interest, I've been on their info list for years but never ordered - just curious to see if any part is relevant to our purposes. http://beautiful-landscape.com/Learn_Marketing_DVD-SP.html Don't know if the link works, maybe copy and paste? I've been getting the emails and info from them for years, so there must be something useful for it to keep going - if only a lesson in self-marketing and self-confidence. I think it promotes diversity in marketing, and that isn't what your question was. But I don't think anythings 'sells itself' without some promotion, it's a circular problem in that time has to be invested, whether it's like you say going to the PostOffice, or getting advertising of some kind organised.
  14. You're stronger than me DC, I couldn't bring myself to sell My D70 though I hardly use it. So it's a 'spare' setup with a macro lens I don't use often - but I keep the battery charged and it does save a lens change when I want to use it. I didn't upgrade hugely, have a D80 and D90 - they do everything I want, the D90 is good for low noise, so I try to suppress the wish for a D7000. Your set-up is a great buy for anyone wanting to start off in DSLR without breaking the bank.
  15. Thanks for link, it does looks quick and fun/useful. I've been a bit 'scared' of Picasa, downgrade now to wary, I had one of the first versions years ago, it was a greedy thing, gobbled pictures, wouldn't allow them to load into another application first, or give them up easily afterwards. And wasn't trustworthy with saving originals. I'm sure that has been well sorted out as so many people complained or walked away from it. That's ages ago, I should give it a try now to see the difference. Have now set up the new Photoshop beta 60 days, but not much looked at it.
  16. I think they have a free beta 60 days for the first time. Will look at loading it tomorrow, if that is right. Just now too late, too tired. No sure of my facts, and haven't looked into what changes/improvements/new features are on offer. Be interested if anyone has/might/will try it, and any feedback.
  17. Seems not - ... quite a shock - glad she is still there for people and animals, whatever constraints. I didn't think the whinging would come to that - it had existed from early days about "the barefoot vet". Sad.
  18. You can always get it "fresh from the goat-farm" at the weekly Sunday Market, the Farmers Market on the corner of Wellington Road and Jacksons Road. It's in the car park and grounds of The Body Shop HQ, Body Shop facilitate the Farmers Market weekly and the craft market is included monthly. It's a really good farmers market with the car park on the grounds, plenty of regular stall holders with lots of variety, including organic herbs, honest free-range eggs, and a good butcher (as well as fresh goats milk).
  19. Sheesh Huga, great buying, thanks for results/details, green with envy here in a nice way, well fairly nice, still green but. (Love the eyes in that first shot, can't beat Nikon blue).
  20. Are not the Smugmug people the best?!! But we all knew that already.
  21. With a bit of practice it becomes more normal-feeling. And does have some "big picture" benefits other than just safety in an action zone. I think most target competition and hunting rifle shooters can use both eyes - for accuracy and depth perception more than safety.
  22. "Someone else" is going the D90/D7000 upgrade. D90 listed in the Market Place. Maybe some feedback in order (sorry DA, couldn't resist).
  23. Not yet, can't justify the spend, and happy enough for now with the D50/70/80/90, (gives me lens options without as much changing lenses). Would love that used D2x but more for the buzz of having one than a real need. I'd probably go for the 7000. Not doing anything much photography-wise at present aside from 'round home' because our recent move to a black-hole area means hardly any mobile phone or internet connection time. Really frustrating til we get sorted with satellite and so on. (For now a clear phone call is impossible, and internet is only a now and then thing with wireless). Hope you both go ahead with an upgrade soon, and will look out for your feedback reports.
  24. Isn't it the luck of the day? Are s/fish part of KMart or linked? - you can order s/fish on line and collect prints at designated KMart kiosk "done by KMart". I took a card into a Bendigo KMart the other day and had a load of 6x4 printed, needed them in a hurry so didn't send to CHouse "back home". And surprised how good they were: expected usual kiosk mediocrity, but they were good colour, sharp, fine gloss etc. I still think it is luck that calibrations etc suit ours - it is a day by day thing, not consistent. Unless using your regular pro lab whose work you know you can't depend on results being always good (or bad).
  25. Megan that's a hoot, don't even think it. Dogs that like to get out are hard-wired, nothing to do with ownership deficiencies (except lack of tack-sharp eyes on fence maintenance). We have two dogs whose aim and mission in life is to get out, they revel in running off for big adventures (or just for the hell of it). The joy in running away is exceeded only by the joy in coming home. It's how they are. Rheneas on the other hand hates even going for walks: "What, leave our perfectly good house, are you all mad!!?" Our three love the new home, purely love it. Doesn't stop the wicked two from seeking escape to go just that bit further. I share your distress when they do manage to take off. Sick with worry and all that at the time, then the adrenalin-sickness feeling afterwards. Young Rheneas is a life-saver, he always rushes to tell me if the black dogs have run off (even if it's just down the paddock after our own resident rabbits). Hard to believe they are all well over ten years old. Take heart (and fix the fence).
