  1. I know of a dog who died rather horribly after ingesting a quantity of bacon fat. If you're not eating it because it's fatty, why on earth would you give it to your dog?
  2. My dog is a grass seed magnet for his feet. Check under the footpads and their legs, as well as their bellies.
  3. Hannah, the vets are perfectly able to give you copies of the test results. You just need to train them to do it. I've found that saying sternly, 'And you will give me copies of the test results' worked for me.
  4. Old thread but wanted to add that bear in mind the grass seed might already have travelled away from the lump area by the time the lump comes up.
  5. Which fish oil capsule was that? My dog is mostly on fish diet (Eagle Pack, Eukanuba FP and Ziwipeak) outside of his turkey and occasional lamb shank.
  6. Kitty, Malaseb is fairly harsh. Have you thought about using a milder shampoo like Aloveen?
  7. I do that every year and the vets I go to seem to expect their clients to bring in their dogs for a yearly check. We get reminder notices about their vaccinations and put in the letter that the vet can also do an exam and have a chat about any issues you may be concerned about. We're rarely in there for less than half an hour.
  8. My dog's also got the spring itches. Happened last year at this time though fortunately, we're not going down the runny poo route this year. According to his breeder it never happened before but the environment here is mostly Australian natives. I've given him a a quarter of a cortizone tablet per day and that seems to have eased it a bit though obviously I don't want to overdo a drug like cortizone. There's no other symptoms aside from the itch. He doesn't have fleas, mites or anything else, it just seems to be the blossoms.
  9. My dog gets mince turkey as he can't have beef, lamb or chicken. I went to three separate supermarkets without luck once. Given that this might happen occasionally, I keep some canned sardines in the cupboard for emergencies. He loves them.
  10. My dog had some problems last year and was on cortisone for around two months. The vet said to steadily decrease it and he had no problems after that. A previous dog was on cortisone for an autoimmune disease and this suppressed his immune system but it allowed him to get sick from other things. Not a good drug to be on long-term.
  11. Didn't work on my last dog who got stressed out at dog training.
  12. That is a lot cheaper than the $104 I am currently paying for 28 x 5 mg tabs. I think she goes to the North Willoughby Veterinary Clinic. Sounds like you're being way over charged.
  13. My dog had an ear infection recently after his ears weren't dried properly after a bath. The vet said it probably exacerbated a low grade infection. I had to clean out his ears with cleaner every day and then put in medicated drops. He was also on cortizone tablets for three days.
  14. Dogs and cats in renal failure are also put on Fortekor. My last dog was on it briefly. It helps with blood pressure. A friend whose dog has the same kidney problem pays $74.95 for 5mg x 28 tabs, so it's pretty expensive and she's not found it anywhere locally that is cheaper.
  15. I emailed them about shipping rates and got an email back suggesting I find someone close to me to order from. They said it would be too expensive for me to get directly from them. I actually thought that was a good response, a company saying, 'Don't buy from us because it will cost you too much in postage.'
  16. They won't be getting my custom. There is no good reason to have wheat free biscuits $3.00 more than the wheat biscuits. I'd rather just make my own.
  17. It isn't that the kidneys can't cope with protein, they can. They can't cope with bad protein so the diet has to be good protein, which is why there are kidney specific diets.
  18. Nah, I opened up the windows. Peanuts I'm less allergic to than other nuts. It's just the smell. I'll live! I've cooked liver biccies before and I think I prefer peanuts. :D I deliberately looked for recipes that didn't have shortening, yeast or cornmeal in them, hence the peanut butter ones which are nicely simple. It doesn't say what the shortening is. Could be either There's heaps of recipes on the net for dog treats. I just decided to substitute the wheat flour. Might try this one and substitute the turkey baby food for real turkey. http://mixes.cdkitchen.com/recipes/recs/12...eats76018.shtml
  19. It is if your dog can't eat anything else. That said, I decided to bake some treats the other night. Bear in mind that I am not a cook of any sort and my best work is toast. :D I bought some organic rice flour and organic peanut butter at a health food shop and found this recipe on the net. It's very simple. I worked out the celcius equivalent, which is 190 degrees, and left them in the oven to harden for around 40 minutes. He loves them. Works out very cheaply, despite buying organic stuff. Mind you, next time I'm going to make turkey bikkies because I'm allergic to nuts and ever since I made the peanut bikkies I've not been able to breathe properly ...
  20. When I took my boy to the vet yesterday I took along the Ziwipeak treats for the vet to have a look at as he said he gets a few IBD dogs that can't have regular kibble or treats. He took down the details to refer people onto.
  21. Update: vet passed us on the ear check. Ears are now to be cleaned every second day with the antibiotic drops every day. They're still a bit inflamed but much better.
  22. You cannot have a food that is both premium and b-grade. That's illogical.
  23. He's lovely, Tilly. Hope things go well. Let us know.
