  1. There is a guy down the street who has a manual wheelchair - and he walks his dog every day! He even takes it to the park and wheels along the gravel. That was just an example of, as in the question must everyone attend classes ? Should it be compulsary ? All my current dogs & every one I have ever owned does a basic sit, stay, comes when called, is lead trained, obeys quiet, leave it, is groom trained to give me this & that foot, chin up,belly now, ears, show me your teeth etc. They are fed together with no fights, do as they are told etc. So I have only ever been to a training class with one, timid dog needed socialising/confidence more than training. My point was it is possible to train a dog without being legally forced to go to a training class. How far do we really want things to go ? Legislation on raising children has left parents with no rights really. This is what is going to happen with dog ownership too unless we are extremely careful what we wish for.
  2. It is not as simple as saying what in a list & enforcing it all as different applies to different dogs & circumstances. When one gets to specifics & they are enforced by law it has to be very cautious & well thought out. eg. Keshwars point - Provide at least basic training for dog/s. Would this mean a person has to attend classes ? What if it is someone in a wheelchair or isolated, far away etc ? Would this mean they are not allowed a dog & cannot train it themselves ? This is where we can cause problems by having too many laws that are fixed & rigidly enforced. Obviously basics should apply which are Food. Shelter. Vet care when needed. Keeping the dog clean & groomed (which never gets a mention). Human contact. Providing the dog with room to exercise & not confining or chaining/tethering for extended times. The last sentance is worded as I see it . Hard to define as a half hour daily walk, as proposed, is not as much exercise as dogs would get running around acreage free. So does the person on acreage get penalised if they don't put their dog on a lead & walk the streets ? We already have laws in place for dogs being under effective control, on a lead, poop scooping, dogs roaming free etc. If we are not careful & accept & expect too many laws/rules we may all find ourselves in a situation beyond our control, with rules applied & enforced stupidly & no control over anything. I do believe that all dogs owned by non registered breeders should be desexed, save a lot of problems, but that is not really under the heading of responsible dog ownership as many entire dogs are fine & not bred from, or a problem.
  3. They have the long handled poop scoop trays & the scoop thing you flick it in the tray with for about $15 in all the Cheapie shops here Reject shop, Cheap as Chips, Go Lo etc. If you feel that you could manage with it & can't find one PM me & I will get one & mail it to you. If not I don't know how much to pay & if anyone will do it for you reasonably. Bad back is the pits. get well soon
  4. oh so do I! Troy why is this thread still here? I'm with Jed - it really ought to be removed, afterall DOL is about pedigree dogs and the voice and reach of DOL (and its pedigree dogs) shouldn't be (ab)used to push McGeevy's barrow. I think its good that it is here. If it is just advertised generally people will not get to see the other side of it all & how promoters of the pedigree dog breeds see it all & voice their opinions. How would we all know about it if not for this post ? As pedigree dog owners/breeders & others with an interest in them we should ALL also be concerned about animal welfare. For all dogs regardless of breed. This affects us, in public perception of dogs & breeding by an organisation with huge public influence. We need to know about this.
  5. This seminar is NOT a promotion of cross bred dogs - it is an opportunity for us all to get together and talk and for you (along with all other stakeholders) to have input and take part in discussions and learn more about what canine research is being done in Australia right now. By listing this invitation here I was hoping to encourage that. I thought making defamatory posts was not permitted in this forum. I really just wish we could all get along! It does appear to be so. The speakers chosen reflect this. I, & am sure many others, would attend gladly if the focus was ANIMAL WELFARE, it is that organisation running it. The seminar is about breeding etc. Managing dogs going from homes into kennels ? Shouldn't it be about dogs going from shelter to new homes ? Educate the owner to be, not research the dog. What about analysing Why were the entire dogs responsible for the bites. In that particular study. Did they have a particular type of owner? How did their children behave ? What was the home environment ? Its all a bit like blaming a car of a certain design, which the owner has the choice of buying. Then when they crash because they drove like an idiot & couldn't handle it. Blame the car. So, let us produce an idiot proof car. My posts are not intended to be defamatory. They are an honest opinion based on what is being presented & what Animal Welfare is supposed to be. The situation is that are millions of dogs ( & more cats ), dumped, surrendered & destroyed daily. Mainly because the owners did not want them, could not cope with them, impulse bought, can't afford them, didn't get the brand they liked etc etc. A low number would be due to owners death, emigration & genuine distress circumstances. There are many instances of abuse, neglect & cruelty by people to dogs. How does this seminar help them, the animals ? I really don't understand. Can you explain the points raised ?
  6. I just wish that the animal welfare groups would concentrate on animal welfare, educate people on dog ownership & responsibilies, stop & take action against cruelty & Leave the registered purebreed dog breeders alone & stop blaming the dogs & breeders for every problem. It does seem that all the problems are blamed on the breeds & the breeders & not on the owners. There is no such thing as the perfect dog. It is a living being, not a toy. The majority of dumped dogs are not from registered purebred breeders. The majority of dogs involved in cruelty & roaming the streets are not either. The majority of impulse buys are not from registered breeders. Animal welfare is supposed to be about animals being cared for properly not genetically engineering the perfect pooch for the masses, like a bloody new car.
  7. Kate Schoeffel (Australian Association of Pet Dog Breeders) - A model for an association of professional pet dog breeders Who actually is this person ? Are they a registered breeder ? Do they cross breed ? Do members of this association do genetic health testing ? If the answer to all this is negative. What the hell are the AWL doing involving this person ? How can it be for the welfare of dogs ? I also wonder why someone from the canine associations is not there too. If the person is reputable re the above its fine. I don't know as I don't know what the association is ? Whoops just read above post. What the hell ? We should all be on to them objecting.
  8. Sorry but Never even thought of something like that. Seriously not good though.
  9. I am in 2 minds over checks. Also would not have sold this person the puppy. Some checking is advisable its just how far & invasive is ok ? While doing a google search & looking at their facebook is fine I feel that earth googling their house is a bit much, but it is there so people are entitled to use it. Police checks are not really relevant. Many crooks love their animals & are good to them. When I first set up my website a few years ago I put on it that registered breeders can apply for a pup or kitten but a home check would be done by myself or another if interstate. Some breeders did say this was intrusive. Due to the crap way some are kept, more so cats IMO, I felt this was fair enough & would not mind if it was done to me. It shows the person cares. Its a matter of what you feel you need to do for peace of mind really.
  10. Not always so good. When the super flash garden centre I used to go in started selling pets they were very good & sounded so expert. Listening to a salesgirl selling a cross breed it sounded very convincing to those who don't know much about dogs. Like so As your puppy is crossed with a Labrador they are prone to hip dyspasia it is important that they have a premium diet & don't gain too much weight. We feed & recommend Hills etc etc. The buyers left delighted with an untested cross breed from goodness knows where + a giant bag of Hills, collar & lead & parted with around $1,000. I know the dog will have good food but it is misleading & makes the public buy these dogs. They have it down to a fine art. Con job really.
  11. Wrong again! Read the weather right!!! Maximum Temperature (since midnight) 28.7 °C at: 10:59 AM Not sure how it is in Vic but here I am an hours drive from the city on the plains & the weather report is never accurate for us. We are always 3 to 6 degrees over the areas they take the temp. My thermometer is outside but in shade. Rain is even funnier. It can go down the highway which is close & miss us completely. We call this tiny area the Bermuda Triangle of SA, its weird.
  12. 40 at 10am here. scary. Can't believe pets get left out in this by anyone. Stay safe.
  13. This may seem a dumb question but why not bath the dog in your shower or bath ? Much easier & you can put a towel or bathmat in the bath if you are worried about scratches.
  14. I would do almost anything for an animal but not as much for people. Apart from the usual of fitting my life around theirs instead of the other way around, taking the bed legs off & putting it on the floor for a crippled dog I once owned, pushing her around in a pram so she didn't miss out on walks for 5 years, thousand at the vet etc I have to say the most out there thing I have done was for an owl. Everyone thinks I am nuts. Last year in the long heat wave I got a call from my neighbour. She had picked up 2 baby owls on the road the day before. Half dead with the heat. One was eating meat etc fine but the other was fading fast. She said I wish I had a dead mouse or rat to tempt it. Yuk preparing it but the wild life carer told me how. Stupid me said I have a friend who breeds rats & supplies pet shops. So at 10 at night I drove an 80k round trip to get a dead rat for an owl Now everyone knows I am nuts. PS. The owl died a few days later but his mate made it. I was in :D

  16. When my daughter moved into her house with a pool & 2 chihuahuas we used plastic lattice all around the pool fence & tied it on with plastic garden ties. Worked well.
  17. Hi Ambervale Hope all is well. The Leo photos have made all my eyes fill with tears, yet again. Oh the horror of our worst nightmare. He looks great,as you all do. Happy photos on the beach ;)
  18. What about having a chat with the person in charge of housing you at the mines & explaining the situation with your old dog ? Maybe they could stick you in a house about further away from others for the time he has left. You don't know if you don't ask. They may make an exception. I could not re home a dog this age. Only ever done it twice with a 1 & a 2 year old & it was awful for me, not for them. Wonderful homes, kept in touch, but I kept bursting into tears for ages after. Worse scenario I think PTS. He will not understand what is going on. Also probably going senile. The guilt & worry of him being elsewhere would kill me.
  19. They want it. They take it. If I say leave it then they will obey but if I forget its what is yours is mine.
  20. You need to find the nest & destroy it. Follow the trails & see if you can find it & treat/destroy. Hosing several times a day will make them come more, for the water, especially in the heat. You often find many ants around garden taps especially if the hose is left connected, they go for the water in the pipe. I spray the pavers around my cat runs with Coopex. Keep the dogs in until its dry & then its fine, never poisoned them. Get it from Fodder stores, its used around farm buildings a lot. Don't leave any food or water outside at all. Hope your dogs are ok.
  21. So does this mean that if you are 5 ft tall & at a show running a toy breed around the ring on a shorter lead they will nab you ? Because that is where they will probably be to enforce this stupidity
  22. Is this allowed in Victoria now ? Here is some of the ad, as I don't think I am allowed to post it all. 23. I would not let them run together unsupervised either but if he is injuring himself with the stress fine, you know your dogs. There is no way you can leave food out without the others getting to it. I let a pup eat as much as it wants until its 6 months, so no food at night so it will eat a good meat etc breakfast but then I leave puppy dry down all day. They don't turn into fussy eaters, over eat or anything else. The adults do not steal it all. They would the meat etc meal but not dry food. Only thing is if they fight over it, sometimes it can be a dominance issue over 1 biscuit when they are not hungry. You have to do what suits your dogs but no way of pup only getting the food.
  24. Often. Please show your friend this link http://www.alv.org.au/storyarchive/0504prisoners/index.php A puppy farm. Owned by a vet.
  25. I don't know in what way the breeder has been deceptive. What I do know is that many people buy a puppy & say it is only as a pet. The breeder often lets them have the puppy with Limited Papers (non breeding pedigree) & agrees to desex. Some, even worse, end up in puppy farms. People do lie to get them. Later many of these people do not desex, they do breed from the dog, showing buyers the pedigree. The buyers don't know or care about registration or don't understand that the dog should not have been bred from. So try & see why the breeder is anxious that you do this. They may have been let down in the past & something bad has happened with one of their puppies. Although its a pain for you this shows that they do care. Sometimes little bundles fail to drop down at 6 months & the vet has to go in & find them, so nothing wrong there, just slow. The breeder has been honest in that the puppy is pet only & expects desexing. If this was not what you wanted you had the option to say no & go somewhere else. Try & see their side. People do not always do what they promise to. Its not force, its probably worry & panic on their side.
