  1. OH called the dog Sam and as he is male I decided on Sam the man.
  2. My OH's parents (well really his mother) looks after them. We never go away for more than 2 weeks. She is in her late 70's so will come a day when she is no longer able to do so. I don't think Sam would be a good candidate for staying at kennels given his reaction when seeing other dogs while out walking. We might just have to stay home or go to pet friendly places.
  3. Me too. It gives me the creeps thinking about it.
  4. I brought Charlie home as a foster dog from RSPCA last January (from the floods). I knew that given time OH would come around to the idea of us adopting Charlie. Now I think he loves him as much as Sam.
  5. I cut the tablet up into small pieces and put them in little balls of mince. This works the best for me.
  6. On Sunday our two dogs will need to be chained up outside in their pen for a couple hours while we have some visitors here. I want to give them a bone each that will keep them occupied for most of the time. I did buy a couple smaller lamb shanks today. I've never given either of them one before and have been reading that its not a good idea to give lamb shanks while dogs are unsupervised. I'm not going to go into the reason but I won't be able to go out to them during that time. Any suggestions for bones that would be more suitable than lamb shanks?
  7. Rocky dolers where do you buy meaty bones for your dogs? I am getting very disappointed with the dog bones at the butcher where I shop. Maybe all butchers have dog bones frozen in a bag which makes it hard to know what they are. Sometimes I end up throwing a lot away because I don't know what they are. Some of the bones look to be hard. Is there anywhere here to buy oxtails that aren't cut up into small pieces. I used to be able to buy very cheap lamb necks at a butcher here but he has closed down. I sometimes get brisket bones but they don't seem to have any meat on them. I've been reading on Dol about beef chuck bones but I've never seen them here or would that be beef soup bones? Sorry this post seems to be very disjointed. Thanks for any help
  8. I give Sam one a week. Sometimes they are a bit big but has had no problems with them.
  9. I have printed out this topic and bookmarked the Control Unleashed web site. I need to do some work with Sam as he 'carries on' when another dog comes towards him when we are out walking.
  10. Maybe this is off topic. I've always been given to understand that anyone coming onto a property to read a meter should have dog free access to that area.
  11. I probably shouldn't have taken him outside but always think maybe he wants to go to the toilet. After I did the first post by which time the stray dog had gone up the road I took Charlie out for a toilet walk and put him back to bed. He settled down okay.
  12. Our new adopted dog Charlie (2 yr old mixed terrier) started barking about an hour ago. I took him out into the dog's outside pen and he kept going and sniffing at one of the corners. Then I saw why he was barking because a Labrador was there. Of course this gets the other dogs around barking as well. OK what can I do to stop him barking and disturbing our other dog and OH and me. Charlie isn't content with just one or two barks. Well at least he's a good little watch dog. ;) The dogs sleep in the garage which is right next to our bedroom and Charlie is just right close to us. OH doesn't like his sleep disturbed because he has to get up at 5.30 in the morning. I get up then too. As a temporary measure I've bought Charlie into the office, closed the door and put the fan on. However I don't want to stay in here until 5.30 a.m.
  13. Well I wouldn't say I worry constantly about the dogs except for the times when we have to go out for a few hours and leave them outside and the weather starts looking unsettled. I worry about them being out in a storm/heavy rain. They do have a kennel each for shelter. Luckily I've always been home when we've had a bad storm so both dogs can come inside.
  14. I checked the price of lamb necks at one butcher here. They are $10.99 a kilo. Obviously they don't class them as "pet food". A few years ago I bought some from another butcher, who has since closed down. From memory he would sell them for a couple dollars.
  15. Sam already has a kennel outside for daytime use but want one for Charlie for the same purpose . It doesn't have to be anything flash just somewhere he can shelter especially if it starts raining and I'm in town. I want to get something smaller than Sam's if I can. Thanks for all the replies
  16. Sometime soon we will have to buy a kennel for our soon to be adopted dog Charlie. I have seen both plastic and timber kennels in town. Any better than the other or is just personal choice?
  17. Hi I'm just wondering if anyone has used any of the boarding kennels in the Rockhampton area. What did you think of them? What was the cost per night? There are some on the road going to Cawarral which sound quite good. They have a website.
  18. Yes, I kind of thought it would be white rice.
  19. I've been reading about giving dogs chicken and rice for upset tummy. Does it have to be white rice or can it be wholegrain brown rice? Is the white rice more easy to digest?
  20. Thanks for all the replies. ;) I will keep the dogs separated(both on a long rope) while they are having their bones. It seems the best thing to do.
  21. We are caring for a little foster dog Charlie from RSPCA (which we will probably adopt once that option is available). Our own dog Sam has bones for breakfast out in his pen 4 mornings a week. A turkey neck one morning, chicken frame another and brisket bones the other 2 mornings. ATM I am giving Charlie his breakfast inside where he sleeps and then let him go outside later on. I've actually bought Sam some lamb rib bones ?? hoping he won't want to bury them as he sometimes does with the brisket bones. On the nights that Sam has chicken necks for tea I've started giving Charlie a few wing tips along with the dry food supplied by RSPCA. Both dogs are kept separated while they're having their tea. So how do I get around the bone situation??? If Charlie stays here he'll be getting bones outside as well. ;) I've also been burying a dental bone and a pigs ear in Sam's sandpit once a week. I guess I'll have to stop doing that ;) or what could I bury for both dogs to find and still have harmony in the home.
  22. Well everything worked out okay while we were away, needless to say I was feeling anxious all the time we were away. I told OH not to make a fuss of Charlie when we got home.
