  1. We are registered as a LAQC and run all our dog expenses thru the company. We have spent (conservatively) $84,000 since I have been in Wires - including importing 4 dogs We have got back in pups sold $26,000 Mmmmmm nope - no profit there...
  2. Wow, lets hope I have as much luck with my frozen semen..... The semen was taken in ?1993 or earlier not too sure as I only bought it late last year.... Hoping to use it this year!!
  3. and because she's pregnant - no jail time!! Disgusting! http://nz.news.yahoo.com/a/-/top-stories/8...-starving-dogs/ A heavily pregnant woman has narrowly escaped a prison sentence after leaving her pet dogs to starve to death. Sheryl Santos Teriaki, 19, was sentenced to two months' home detention and 100 hours' community work for ill-treating animals and failing to prevent suffering when she appeared in Oamaru District Court yesterday. Teriaki is six months pregnant, The Timaru Herald reported. "That fact alone has saved you by the narrowest margin from a sentence of imprisonment," Judge Paul Kellar said. The veterinarian who dealt with the case said it was the worst case of animal neglect she had seen in her 19 years in the job, the court was told. Police and the SPCA were called to Teriaki's Southland address in early June following complaints from neighbours. They found at least nine dogs of different ages and breeds in such poor condition that some were barely able to move. Teriaki said she had arrived home from visiting Oamaru to find her partner, who was meant to be caring for the dogs, had left. She found a dead puppy and buried it before returning to Gore to look for her partner. Police also discovered a small sleepout where five small puppies were housed. It was littered with faeces and urine and had no food or water available. An autopsy on the dead puppy showed it had died of starvation and hypothermia. A second puppy found dead at the address was found to have died of the same causes.
  4. You are lucky it's just cardboard. My last litter (not this one) the bitch (it was her first) ate away the top of the front of her Meltica whelping box! She destroyed the front slide in doorway into the box, she scratched the walls of the sleepout room she was in and chewed away all the surrounding barriers in the room by the main doorway (these were to stop pups getting squashed when the door was opened Thankfully she was an excellent mother
  5. Thanks so much Mastini, I really feel for you and your poor girl.... did the vet know why she still birthed? The good thing is your girl is still alive and well!! I know sometimes it's little comfort but there's always someone worse off, isn't there? Give your girl a big kiss from me, lots of fuzzy kisses (18 to be exact) from the wires and a siberian lick from all of us here at Hotwyr xoxox
  6. More likely that she's feeling insecure. Not sure where she's whelped but have a good look around. Shut the curtains, close doors around her, remove other dogs from the house or kennels next to hers, put a lid on the box and make it more cave like. If she's not had an calcium I;d be looking into that as well. She's in our sleep-out. Curtains closed, away from everything. He was quite sick this wee boy - crying with the bowel pain. My vet came and took him, drained his tummy and gave him some metoclopramide. She then brought him back - he died on the way home....... We did show him to her - and have removed all the things that smelt like him since then.... she's had oxy and calcium..... So sad
  7. Utterly appalling! There are no words ................
  8. My bitch has 8 4 day old girls to fuss over BUT she still paces and whines and appears to be "looking" for the little boy that passed... Its hard really..... I know eventually she will be ok but still it's sad to watch her
  9. we have a purpose built whelping room in our sleep out. We have a single bed in there for the whelping hours. We then leave the mum to it with a walkie talkie on open communication for the 1st few nights...
  10. Ok, It just smells funny thats all. It needs to smell the same as the others so you could try rubbing it in the other pups... then try taking all the other pups off her and popping the op pup on her. I know it's hard but keep trying and don't stress 'cause if you are Portia will be too.
  11. Thanks guys, it was really sad :'( spent most of the weekend blubbering Wish it was 8 males to choose from SH..... I really needed a boy. Wyatt is 7 now - even tho he is still winning groups and breed it's time I got a new boy..... sigh......
  12. Had the babies last night. Who would have guess we would have 6 bitches in a row ALL Black/White then 1 Dog also Black/White then a Liver/White bitch and 1 final Black/White Bitch Total - 9 pups 8 bitches 1 dog Rae ETA: sadly the little boy passed away an hour ago :'( We think from some type of bowel obstruction. This is the 1st time since breeding that I have had a living baby pass on. God but it hurts Run free sweet boy......
  13. I always ultrasound at 28 days and then xray at 8 weeks.... So far so good (5 litters) oops to answer the question - mine usually show a thickening at 6 weeks and suddenly at 8 weeks - if they were on the beach - Harpoons would be a flying.... LOL
  14. I have had 3 experiences with bitches and other owners. 1st one - my 1st litter. Pick bitch went to a friend and we co-owned (we kept pick dog) 2nd pick went to a hunting home down here in Timaru (we moved here 3 years ago) owner said he would keep her entire "incase" we ever wanted to breed her...... I was doubtful. Pick bitch came back to us 2 years ago and we spayed her and rehomed her - not as good as the bitch we kept from a later repeat mating. 2nd pick bitch - we had a litter from her last year (she was 6) she is a phenominal hunting dog. 8 pups all with hunters! 2nd one - my 3rd litter. Only 1 pup - a bitch. Lives down the road owned by a hunter. As she was the only one of the breeding I asked if they might consider keeping her entire and they agreed (she does have a "not to be bred" endorsement) She is due to have her pups in 2 weeks. I will lift the endorsement with the KC and the owners will get a bitch from the litter plus the spayed mum back ........ I will keep pick dog. 3rd one - my last litter Pick bitch from the 2nd pick above. She is owned by me in the eyes of the KC but lives with a hunter nearby. I didn't keep her because at this stage I have no dog to put to her and the owners had already had a bitch from us who died from a tumour (no due to anything we could avoid but so so devastating). We gave them this pup but with the proviso that I show her to title and have 1 litter..... So it can work.....
  15. aaaawwww Soph - you so funny you a real crack up Reckon you could get a few people (using term loosely) talking with a hound (sic) in ya team.... Oh no hang on that's what you run already - my mistake.........
  16. How exciting - congrats! The GWP's are such cute little babies! Thanks Soph - you want? Cheap to you!! xoxox
  17. point taken we don't - but huskies loose in a yard when no ones home isn't a great idea either.... unless they are in 6 foot, hotwired, fully enclosed runs - maybe then....
  18. Yes classic anthropomorphism of animals Dogs don't have morals, ethics, ability to feel any intent etc...... Sadly these dogs are at the mercy of their owners who - having had the council around their place doing work - failed to check to see if their property was still safe for their dogs to run around in without fear of escape. Result = 1 traumatised pet owner and 1 poor JRT who never stood a chance!! I have had siberians for 17 years......anyone who has ever been to any of my properties, as a worker or doing work near by, has had to deal with me being in their face about making sure nothing is done to make it possible for my dogs to escape and if anything is - that they let me know so I can temporarily fix it until they can permanently fix it. It is MY responsibility to check my property to ensure my dogs are securely contained BEFORE I let them out to play!
  19. haven't ever said about my litters on here and not sure I have ever seen a GWP litter on here either..... anyway in New Zealand Hotwyr GWP due 26th onwards
  20. As this thread and others on the forum have demonstrated, there are people who think encouraging a child to interfere with a dog's food reinforces the child's higher place in the pack order. Pity more people don't own and use crates for feeding times IMO. This is a text book bite incident that will be played out in dozens of family homes this year. All lthe sadder because its easy to prevent and in sensationalising the incident, the media do nothing to assist. Agree agree agree, It never ceases to amaze me how people manage to put themselves and others (usually children) in these totally preventable situations. I have 11 dogs and I can take the food bowls off every single one in the middle of them feeding - it's a great party trick - but that's all it is. I most certainly wouldn't do it if I didn't have too - and in all honesty I am not sure why I would have too... but anyway I can do it They also get fed in their own kennel BY THEMSELVES! Never never never would I have any child near any dog that was eating anything. It's a recipe for disaster. No dog is 100% reliable (unless it's a stuffed one maybe) no breed is 100% reliable no matter what the breeder, seller, internet, dictionary ... blah blah blah says. Every dog can bite, every dog will guard something, be it food, toys, other dogs, people.... I guess people will never learn.
  21. Huh? I thought you had alaskans???
  22. BSL sucks - target the owners NOT the breed!!
  23. One of my homebred wires had OCD shoulder. Surgery was done at 9mths. Crate rest 3 months (our choice to do the extra month) the dog is now 6. Never had any side effects. Is a sled dog champion (running in a 3 dog team) show champion, multiple group winner.... Best post surgery care you could give is: rest - even tho it kills you to lock them up joint guard (or similar) - with glucosamine/condroiton, green lip mussels/shark cartiledge etc...... low protein adult food - not for large breeds (just make sure protein % is less than 20) and finally keep their weight down.... All Aussies do this. Mine does too. I helped handle Aussies before I got mine and I have never seen an Aussie NOT do it.....
