The incubation period is the time from your exposure/time of infection with the ringworm to the time when you show symptoms of the infection. I believe that with most infections, if not all, you are contagious in the incubation period -so spreading the bacteria or virus too other people or animals - but you probably are not aware that you are.

I'd just have a back up plan. Is it possible for someone to take her home, or to a safe place if she does get "out of hand" or she doesn't like the crowds.

Just an idea you could discuss with your breeder. Can you supply your breeder with a T shirt with your smell on it or even a new piece of material-towel, blanket etc., that your pup and it's litter mates can use now. Something you can bring home with you that the pup can have with familar smells. It may help the pup to settle in the first few days after he leaves his mother.

Keeping Working Breeds Or Big Dogs In Small Spaces
Scarlet replied to dee lee's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have 2 border collies in a small yard with no problems at all. I've also had BC's on acreage and agree they very few dogs self exercise so the amount of space is not that important. My dogs get regular outside of home exercise but lots of activities in the small yard. They also gets lots of human contact (which I think is more important than exercise) and a "reasonable" amount of mental stimulation. They are pretty happy dogs. My two don't play all that much together outside - but they love playing IN the house -

I think he is ready for a drive of a few hours. It is good for dogs to get used to cars as you never know when they'll need to travel really long distances. Maybe I've been lucky not to have a dog who gets car sick as many of them have travelled very long distances in the car and they usually just go to sleep.

By memory I think testing is only about $50 - which is worth it for peace of mind.

I have a red border collie who is a nice deep red - IMO. As a pup she was quite pale but her ears were red. The breeder said she would darken with age to be the colour of her ears, which she has. I have been told that brown border collies fade in excessive sun.

If you don't want a pup put a post in rescue or look at the home page and check out mature dogs looking for homes. If it's a mature dog stress that you have children and get a dog fostered or brought up with children. If possible watch the owners/fosters children interact with the dog. Then of course none of us would ever leave children unsupervised around any dogs, even our own.

My dogs prefer to sleep outside in summer - it is cooler. I once had a rough collie who not only preferred to sleep outside but out in the elements! He would often sleep out on the grass covered in a layer of frost!

Scarlet replied to Meeka17's topic in Puppy Chat
Congratulations - the best news. Does the vet want to check in a few months/year or so? -
Heart Murmur In 6 Week Old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Is it possible for the dog to be seen by a cardiologist who may offer additional advice? Otherwise I really don't know what to suggeest. Has the breeder offered you another pup from the litter or are they all sold? I would probably take the pup at 8 weeks but that would be purely an emotional decision. -
Same Age, Same Sex.. Can It Ever Work?
Scarlet replied to wolfie333's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've done a little bit of fostering and I always looked for a male as I have a dominant female who prefers males and it has been my understanding that this mix is often best . But I once had 3 (rough collie, labrador and kelpie cross) male entire dogs who got along famously. The top dog was the older but the other two were approx the same age. -
Can You Reccomend A Groomer Please
Scarlet replied to joanne76's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think dogs are like kids - better without their parents. I can wash my dogs without any problems The dog washer can was my dogs without problems But If I stay with the dog washer my dog is really naughty and tries to jump out of the tank. -
I also have a "throw" obsessed dog but I do not give her tennis balls as previous dogs have had their teeth worn badly with tennis balls. If she finds a tennis ball at a park she will chew it until it is in pieces but other toys she keeps for ages.

As far as I'm aware the lowest grade is 1 (which is often undectable) and the highest 5 or 6. So a 2/3 is rather mild. I don't think it would stop me from getting a dog. Things like keeping the dogs mouth healthy and not letting the dog get overweight are really important. How old is the dog? I may be more concerned with a younger dog having a heart murmer than an older dog. Although in puppies sometimes a murmer can go way. But you really need to get your vet to give you their opinion.

Some Wierd And Worrying Behaviour From Poppy Tonight
Scarlet replied to Sayly's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It might be acceptable behaviour from the dog's perspective but if it was my dog, and as leader of the pack, I would have removed her from the situation at the sign of the first growl. I know I don't read dog signs too well but if my dogs growl I take it seriously-the next warning might be a snap or bite. -
My neighbours white bull terrier wears a human Tshirt and hat, but she is an older girl and happy to wear them.

I only have a small garden but I still have buckets placed around the place. In summer my BC's like their plactic shell wading pool, so they always have water in there too.

Advantix every 2 weeks - expensive but it does work. You should do a physical check every day - at least around the head, neck, ears. What type of dog do you have as sort coats are obviously easier to check

First be careful with snail bait -just don't us it. Dogs will eat fertilisers like blood and bone and although I don't think it does too much damage I'd use it very sparingly I'd put in paths as dogs like children will follow them most of the time. Try to plant larger plants of give them wire protection untill they are larger. If a plants are too hard to see a dog will just run through them. Plant quie densly so dogs won't be encouraged to go through the garden. Border the garden with ornamental grasses that ate quite hardy. There are lots of these grasses in every nursery. There are a few realllly scratchy grasses that I 'd not get in case the dogs scratch their eyes. Also avoid plants like oleander, lilies, wandering jew, poinsettias I would put a fence around the vegie garden - even if it is just stakes and rope. Give the dog a boundary that he is not allowed to cross. Don't let him near the vegie garden - be consistent and if he goes near it call him away. That soft soi; is so nice to dig or roll in.

In the last couple of years of his life my aged rough collie (who had bowel cancer) could/would really only eat cooked chicken giblets - he loved them

I have heard of similar "old wives tales" If you had an animal orphaned at birth it was said that if you breathed into the animals face and your smell was the first the animal was exposed to it would assume you were it's mother and bond to you as such.

Opinions Please On Very Skinny Labx - Photos
Scarlet replied to Katdogs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
He looks gorgeous and I can't imagine a labX having trouble putting on weight. I've had a couple of thin fosters and like Trisven13 said give 3 or 4 small meals a day to start with and gradually decrease the number of feeds as you increase the volume. Does he need to increase his condition before the vet will desex him? -
You could try putting your pup on a lead when he is in the same room as the cats. That will give you control over him and stop him from running at the cats, while they can go where they please. If you could get him to ignore the cats, maybe by training him to sit etc and giving him treats when he is "good" This will at least get the cats used to the idea of him being around and learning that he won't always be trying to get to them. Having him in a crate in the room could also work. The cats could get used to him while knowing that they are safe. If you don't know much about crate training click on the search function - there is heaps about it on DOL.
