  1. No not if I'm home and I'm present, they are not on a lead but their recall is excellent. I don't leave the dogs alone with a stranger.
  2. Is there somewhere else you can drive to, to go for a walk? Another quieter neighbourhood? I would be horrified if my dogs jumped up on anyone - I can't see how anyone sees this as acceptable; friendly or not.
  3. Was it your dogs who were not getting on? Is it you or Bonnie who Lucy is avoiding?
  4. Beautiful pup. I really admire Malinois but too much dog for me
  5. My sister was knocked back by a breed rescue a few years ago. This was a person who had previously owned this breed and the dog had a wonderful life and was well loved. She said she could get a reference from her vet who was also a neighbour who often saw this dog out and about. This dog was very well known in her inner city suburb. My sister spent over $10,000 in oncology fees and surgery associated with a cancer this dog had when she was about 10yrs - giving the dog another 4 years of a happy life The reason given for not being approved was that the four adults in the household worked full time; despite the fact that they all worked different hours so the dog would not even have been alone all that often. My sister ended up getting a pup from the breeder she got her first dog from but it has soured her about rescue organisations.
  6. When I walk home I often meet up with an elderly gent walking "Devil", a 16 yr old small terrier cross. Yes it takes me ages to walk this small section of his street but I think it takes him longer because the locals all stop or a chat. It's a ritual for both of them and they both love it. My oldie is only 12 but she still looks young. Only I can tell that she walks a lot slower due to her arthritis but I'll take her out, even in a pram for as long as I can. One advantage about getting older myself is that I really don't care what other people think and if anyone ever said anything inappropriate about my dogs when they get older I would be very blunt back to them and tell them to mind their own business.
  7. I'm so sorry to hear this Darien. I'm sure you'll treasure your time together I love my calmer, obedient older dogs but the fear of loosing them gets more real each year.
  8. I've had dogs wear down their canine teeth and one vet said it was from the abrasiveness of tennis balls so they are banned at my place - maybe check with your vet. My border collies (so working dogs) are also obsessive with balls but also anything that I can throw/they can throw and retrieve. They probably see it as work and attention.
  9. I can't remember exactly but I know that when I have bought a pup (long time ago now) it has taken at least a month (and I think longer) before I have received the pedigree papers. And I've always paid cash. I have received a receipt and usually copies of immunisation and general info when I've collected the pup. The number of litters is concerning.
  10. Usually when I change the water I use the same bowl. I remove the empty bowl, rinse then refill so I would be doubtful if there was an empty bowl in the cage. Or sometimes I fill a jug and top up the water bowl; I would think this easiest in a pet shop. It only takes a few seconds to do. Wouldn't cameras have the time on them? My basic one does
  11. As you are already working with a behaviourist; talk to them about the attack and any steps you can take to minimise any adverse reactions. Best wishes for a quick recovery for your dogs
  12. Sorry to hear about Puck so I hope the drops work. Could you just put in the drops when he is laying on his side and not allow him to get up for 10/15 mins. Even gently hold his head if you have to. I know with my own drops I'm usually told to remain still for that time and by then he may not even feel the drops. Then repeat for the other side.
  13. Most people on this forum are responsible owners but I have worked in rescue where people have had a voucher to have pets desexed when they are older and just don't do it. Many meant to but..................... Unfortunately a large portion of the population just can't be trusted. I certainly don't have a problem with Tubal Ligation and Vasectomy as long as the cost doesn't make it prohibitive for the general population.
  14. OMGoodness, I would be so distressed if my dogs ever growled at me. How some of them didn't get their faces bitten - they were complete idiots.
  15. Looking for a pet friendly in Rockhampton I would recommend www.ambassadormotel.com.au/‎ Dogs are allowed in the rooms which was great for me. The motel is quite old and very run down and the new owners are slowly remodelling. My room was clean, basic but comfortable. The owners were friendly and room service was prompt
  16. I believe a Sheltie would have better recall on acreage. I've had a Sheltie, Rough Collie and Border Collies and I love that they idolise me so much and are so easily trained. I have no experience with Japanese Spitz
  17. I agree completely. Just to add: you may want to have everything nice and clean but don't wash their bedding before you move. Try to keep routines as similar as possible.
  18. I had a curly when my 4 boys were young - 3-6 yrs when we got her. She was wonderful; tough enough to rough play with my very boisterous children but gentle enough never to hurt them apart from the occasional bump over. She was very active; LOVED water and very destructive for the first couple of years. We had a Lab who had nothing on her when it came to chewing and digging  When she has her "zoomies" the boys learnt very quickly to lay flat on the ground and she would run and jump over them - or she would knock them flying which they sometimes deliberately let her do.
  19. You could also get a "sand" clam. My dogs are happy to drink out of water they have sat in. I have previously dug a bucket 3/4 into the ground; pretty hard to pick up when full - only for large dogs that can't fall in and can reach into it to drink.
  20. I think two dogs from the same family should be cheaper than two separate dogs if they are sharing a run and playtime together. Would you even put 3 or 4 dogs together? When I was renting I would put my dogs into a kennel overnight for house inspections as I told the agent I didn't really trust her not to accidentally let them out of the gate - which I usually had locked but they wanted access to. The same when I had carpet cleaners in etc. even though I could lock them in the back yard. But your service would have been great if I could collect after work - might be too late for you though. I think I would expect to pay $20/$25 for one dog and $35/$40 for two. I figure one night's accommodation would be more expensive per night than 5/7 nights so I would expect to get a discount if I was using more days. I assume that the play area is shared with all the dogs in the kennel so I would also pay additional if my dos spent more time there rather than in the runs. But again the dogs would survive one day in a run although I know they would enjoy smelling all the other smells that would be in the play area. I wouldn't expect a price variation in the size of the dogs as you aren't feeding them
  21. I didn't even know there was such a thing! I use a knife which I do admit is not all that accurate
  22. Many years ago I had 3 entire males inside (one until he was 16 yrs) and never had a problem...................now cats are a different matter and I would never have an undesexed male cat. My dogs didn't come into contact with females so not sure if that would have made a difference.
  23. I couldn't imagine anyone on this forum saying no to any of those questions Yes - I have travelled 700kms round trip twice - once to see the pup and mum before paying - then again to pick up pup. Would readily do so again yes - I would always like to see the mum and dad but I would have to see the health test results. yes - I couldn't give anyone money who didn't treat their animals really well; that would encourage them to keep breeding and abusing the dogs
  24. and no one did anything? How awful for her. Not always, but quite often people like this are cowards so if everyone got together to protect this woman and each other he may back down. I would definitely report him to both the council and police.
