So A Friend Makes This Comment...
Scarlet replied to all that glitters's topic in General Dog Discussion
Of course a lot of farm animals are treated badly and there are people lobbying for them too but their pain doesn't negate the pain of breeding dogs in puppy mills. I refuse to buy pork, veal or eggs from caged chooks (I can only hope that the labelling is correct!) but because I care about some farm animals doesn't mean that I can't care about dogs. A huge difference is that dogs are companion animals and are brought into our homes and lives so their mental state directly effects our children and our society. Unsocialised puppies can create a lot of problems. :p -
Working Dog Plucked From Death Row Finds Loving New Family
Scarlet replied to BMAK's topic in General Dog Discussion
This boy is from a DOLer rescuer - Belgrael Their post is below. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=205527 Fantastic work -
I immediately thought of a collie. If a rough would be too much brushing a smooth might be perfect. A pup/young dog might be too active but I assume there would be mature dogs available. They are so gentle, calm and loving.

German Shepherd Died In Tragic Accident
Scarlet replied to Riley'n'Mia's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree use the word dead as small children cope quite well but can also get confused easily. We buried a dog in our back yard when my twins were about 3 and they still remember Sally's burial. They threw lots of oranges in her grave for her to chase in heaven. She was buried next to the orange tree. This book may be a little old for a 2 yr old but it is wonderful for slightly older kids. http://shop.newfrontier.com.au/shop/produc..._product_id=188 -
I don't blame her. Picking up poo is not my favourite pastime and it usually belongs to my dogs. People with dogs should respect that not everyone likes dogs so should go out of their way not to offend.

Tobias, the Newf Rescue We Took On Is Now Home
Scarlet replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
it's lovely to see rescue dogs go to homes that specifically know their needs. Such a lucky dog to have fallen on his feet. -

Will Water Loving Dogs Swim And Swim And Swim
Scarlet replied to Lucy's mama's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've had a few different breeds of dogs who loved water but my Curly Coated Retriever simply outshone all the others. Sally would swim for hours and hours if you let her. Luckily she would return to the bank when called but then she would sit and whimper to be let back in. Luckily she was happy to swim around us and didn't take off. She was really strong and had no trouble at all swimming against the current in some pretty strong rivers. She loved all water crafts but really loved swimming behind our canoes. -

Lovely pups. I don't often post as I can't say anything that hasn't been said but I often think of you Jed and occasionally light a candle. The weather in Nth Brissy is quite beautiful at the moment so I hope it lifts your spirits. -
Thank you, that was lovely.

If you are still considering Shelties give MrsD a PM. I met her sheltie a while ago now but he was the most calm, confident Sheltie I've ever come across. (I has Shelties as a child-ours weren't barkers but they were quite timid) If I were to get a Sheltie I would certainly look at his breeders. MrsD's sheltie plays/lives with a pretty full on kelpie

Lacy And Tully And Thier Quest To Become Delta Dogs
Scarlet replied to tlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was in a children's hospital in Brisbane and there were visiting dogs - not sure who they were accredited with. They were NOT that obedient - but they were VERY tolerant of the children. The dogs were kept on long leads so the owner/handler could keep a pretty close watch on them anyway. -
Monah it was a Catahoula that was found after 8 months stranded on an island up your way. But the family live in Gympie.
-
In an amazing tale of survival, Brandi the Catahoula hunting dog spent eight months fending for herself on Woody Island off the coast of Hervey Bay before being rescued and reunited with her family today. She was spooked by fireworks on New Year’s Eve, broke her chain and sprinted off, running right to the end of the Urangan pier and jumping into the ocean about midnight. Her family, who were on holidays from Gympie, searched for her but eventually gave her up for dead – they thought she must have drowned or been taken by sharks. But Brandi survived and Fraser Coast Regional Council officers delivered her back into their loving arms today. http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/sto...-tale-survival/ Brandi wasn't microchipped and the council staff did a marvelous job finding the owners, going through old newspapers looking at lost and found pets etc.

True, unless you are my girl who gives her toys to any other dog who approaches - just in case. That said, this is exactly why I don't take my BC's to dog parks. They are VERY serious about their toys or in fact any work they might be doing - anyone who interrupts is in trouble. I wouldn't put too much stock in the dog park incident, but would also not be letting your pup play with toys around other dogs - they are a resource and will more than likely be guarded. This is one of my BCs exactly. She just tolerates my other BC with her balls but no other dog - we never go to a dog park when other dogs are there. Otherwise she really likes dogs.

Another here for a rough collie. My mother's family loved them and there was a picture of their rough collie laying under my bassinet out in the sun. Mum though them too big for us in the suburbs and as children we had a cocker cross then a sheltie. But when I was 18 and living in New Zealand I bought a rough collie. He lived to 16 and travelled with me around NZ and a lot of Australia. Back then no one stopped me travelling on buses and trains with him and I never had a problem with rentals or even YHA's or youth hostels!

I think the breeds you're looking at might have a bit of a waiting list for puppies. When you decide on a breed google that breed club for your state. The breed clubs often have a person in "charge" of puppies and can let you know who has or is expecting litters. They will also let you know what the parents of the pup should be health tested for and how to check on this testing. I've found the breed clubs very helpful.

Should Aggressive Dogs Be Taken To Offleash Parks?
Scarlet replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't have a DA dog BUT she is very focused when retrieving and doesn't like other dogs (apart from my other BC) coming up to her then or (heaven forbid) take her retrieve article. She will give a warning growl to the dog and I think she would fight if the dog didn't leave her alone. The few times it's happened I've been able to call her back to me so it has never got to a fight stage. I can't even remove the toy because she'll then use something else-stick, leaf etc. So I only take her to of leash areas when they are empty. If someone comes I leash her. She really likes other dogs but usually at home. I have let her associate parks with retrieving or frisbee playing so it is my fault. -
One of my dogs has early arthritis-7yrs-and she has done very well on Joint Guard. I bought it from here: http://www.greyhoundproductsdirect.com.au/shoppinginfo.htm

While there is no legislative requirement to hand the dog over for impounding in QLD, there is a requirement to do this to obtain clear ownership of the dog. The dog should not be sent anywhere, or the pups given or sold to anyone until ownership is established. Before you can say that the finders have done everything right, we would need to know which council area they are in, and what was said. Metropolitan council pounds refusing to impound strays is very unusual, and has wider ramifications for other people in the community, and we need to wait for T-Time to find out more about this. I just said that it was possible that the finders have done everything right. There is NOT a requirement to physically put the dog in the pound to obtain clear ownership of the dog although I don't necessarily agree with this nor what follows if you do deliver a stray dog to say the Brisbane City Council. I hope everything works out for this dog and that legal ownership is sorted.........if it isn't already! I don't think the Brisbane City Council(nor other city councils) would refuse to impound the dog but they often do ask for the finder to hold the dog for them. I have done this on numerous occasions. I have also sent them photos of the dogs for them to put on their data base. Yes we are all talking hypotheticals but that's pretty common with on line forums

I would love to help this dog but I work full time, have 2 dogs-one a bossy bitch with other females and I have no idea of whelping. I hope one of the good rescue groups can take her. About all the discussion - Qld is quite different to other states regarding legislative requirements of lost dogs.........and it is possible the finders have done everything right. They were possibly given the correct procedures when they rang the council pound or RSPCA. Personally I'd hate to see the pups born in a pound or the RSPCA. There have been some lovely offers of help, so good on you.
-
In Qld the holding period for an unregistered dog is 3 working days. It can be put down after 3 working days. The dog does NOT have to be taken to the pound but there is a moral expectation that you contact the pound and give your details and that of the dog to them to put on their data base. You then only have to hold the dog for 3 working days before the council will let you take ownership if you want to. IF you surrender the dog to the pound and they decide to put it down you WILL NOT be notified, so you do not get the chance to adopt/take the dog back. If it passes for adopting it's up to the finder to keep checking the website or pound. The dog will be put down if it doesn't pass the temperament or health test. Brisbane City Council (and I have been told this by council staff) are unlikely to adopt out a pregnant dog nor are they likely to keep and allow a pregnant dog to whelp. All I could suggest is for the "finders" to register this dog on the council lost registry then after 3 day without the owners collecting her, she would be the finder's dog.
