Can you point me to to the list of "Registered Reputable Breeders" please..? ;) Is it online or perhaps the ANKC has it available? :D Homework ,homework, homework as you stated!!! ANKC as you would know has a code of ethics which I believe is fair!! ;) But my point was ETHICAL people are just that, and in turn one would hope they were ethical breeders too. Unethical people in my view have a very slim hope of being an ethical breeder .

When I applied to purchase my dogs I had a four page q and answer booklet, and from talking to the breeder many were knocked back and they answered all questions perfectly, the breeder just didnt wanta 100% show hoe and win at all costs owner. I have a very long questionaire which I believe covers everything and asks for references of vets, landlords ( if applicable) fencing and the usual questions asked I gather. A lot of people are just nosey ( IMO) and cant be bothered filling out the questionaire, so in my view if you cant be bothered in answering a few questions then you certainly dont have the right to have one of my puppies! I have a lovely couple who are travelling over from Queensland to have a look at the puppies when the are here. I think every breeder is different in their approach and obviously breeds dictate this, BUT one thing renains constant ALL ethical breeders care about where their puppies go. :D

Thanks Baby dragon, I got 1 wrong, but I learnt from it! Heres one day hoping I can have one of my dogs trained as an Assistance Dog and be as helpful as they are in the USA. Thanks for the link J

as I said (all parties agreeable) I have it in my contracts and puppy buyers can opt out or in the choice is theirs many want to saty in contact with others in the same breed, I cannot speak for others as I stated THIS is for me!!THEIR privacy is respected it is personal choice, having been in the Public Law Enforcement arena I am all to aware of peoples Privacy and rights! lol However having said that these days !! FOI waves a big stick in either direction and most peoples details are available on the electoral role for all to see! lol

Registered Reputable breeders are above board as people AND breeders and HEALTH test all their dogs and CAN supply CERTIFICATES for all tests completed upon request! As stated in ANKC ethics they provide LIFETIME service and advice with their puppies they sell. I suggest you FURBALL have a look at the ANKC website. there is a lot of great information there1 Good luck in your search (if in fact you are looking for a new family member) Breeders who have nothing to hide will in fact provide people who have had past puppies and are happy for you to make contact with them ( all parties agreeable) I in fact have contracts for all my dogs that are rehomed. Referring me to sites and information I have seen over and over again will not help. My question is how do I know that I'm getting what I think I'm getting. I know from experience that getting a pup from a registered breeder does not mean a healthy or ethically bred dog. lol! YOU will learn, maybe if you listen to some of the people who give you information on DOL YOU will learn, reading and research, eventually it will sink in! lol

Do health certs go with purebred? My friend got a purebred JRT and she got a resume type thing. It included the pups pedigree, pictures of parents and health details, pups health checks, grandparents info, info on previous litters, contact details etc. Is this a common ting for breeders to do? I cant speak for other breeders but for me it is what I do! Maybe you can read the ANKC code of ethics and the whole website, there is some really interesting and helpful infromation on there. What kind of things do you include in the contracts?

Very Young Dogs That Go To Rainbow Bridge
Wazzat Xolo replied to furballs's topic in General Dog Discussion
what a shame, hugs to you, but if you got the dog from a REGISTERED breeder and its a health defect then you should be able to discuss this with them to help them with their breeding. I do hope you let the breeder know for the future. -

People Who Work Fulltime And Have A Puppy.
Wazzat Xolo replied to Whipitgood's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know there are some excellent Doggy Day care centres if they are worrid and generally the Pet Sitters that can drop in to keep an eye on the pup at times and for the midday feed, I too Whipitgood am lucky like you and never worked full time with a puppy or had someone to look after them for me! -
Sending hugs and strength LWC to you and your flatmate xoxox

Interesting read, thanks for posting, I have shared the link with a Sarplaninac breeder here, they will be most intersted

Thanks for that Wazzat. The link didnt work on my computer though. Anyway this thread has degenerated too far. According to Terrierman.com "If you cannot pick up a border terrier by its tail and throw it over a fence, it's not a true border terrier", now I think this is the crux of this debate lol about the only sensible comment in the thread well said Nic! its become a Mass debate

I dont think people are telling you to go elsewhere Furballs ( maybe you could reword some posts in a different manner) On paper ( or posts) some things can come across a bit different than one means. A few breeders have answered your question on costs, but bear in mind it is a personal question and not all will want to/ or should reply, up to the individual and I think you may find these costs across the board with the majority of Registered Dog Breeders. Its always good to ask questions to learn more, but sometimes its good to be very careful how they are worded then everyone can understand and answer if they so desire. There are a lot of long term respected breeders on here that teach so many so much, they no doubt are asked the same question many many times about designer and cross breed dogs and when these little DDs sell for far more than the pure bred health tested dogs which they pour they heart and soul into its no wonder cross bred or designer dogs are not a favourable topic! Lol Use the search button to research a few threads on this THERE are a LOT of topics that a worth a read on the DD debate.

off topic but can someone point me in the direction of a good thread on de-bunking the hybrid vigour argument. I seem to recall reading something about it being a theory that is more applicable to plants than animals. Sorry Nic it was Jed.......... but I recall from memory ( I am old) that Jdavis has spome knwoledge on this through her work with primates ?? Title: Some Practical Solutions to Welfare Problems in Dog Breeding Authors: P D McGreevy & F W Nichols - 1999 Summary : This paper reviews the history of the establishment of dog breeds summarises current health and welfare problems, and makes suggestiongs about outcrossing and introducing new blood into established breeds. Also information on F1 hybrids, and hybrid vigour Link: http://www.terrierman.com/mcgreevey-some-p...og-breeding.pdf This post has been edited by Jed: 6th Feb 2010 - 07:49 PM

Nic I think jdavis ( hope thats still their name ??) may have had a really good thread or post in this a while back ( may be wrong but the names rings a bell with the thread topic ??)

Furballs The actual costs to breders I can state mine up front, as I dont like to hide things!! I have only half read the thread so forgive me if I have answered wrongly or missed your point. I can state a cost to a breeder in terms of a new breed being established in this country, I will never recoup any money spent, even if I bred for many years as establishing a breed and educating the public costs, costs. Apart from the original costs of the male and two females ( bare min for a breed to even start) there are the import, quarantine fees, vet fees, paperwork, breeder calls, legal fees etc. Then there is the (as others have stated ) Health Tests, hips, elbows, eyes, DNA , vet check ups, suitable vehicle, suitable kennel runs, breed club fees, entry fees, world wide club fees, International Phone calls \Showing fees, education to the public, education to judges, prep of paperwork and Breed Power Points, associated costs with maunfacture of above and distribution. Plus all the interstate travel to showcase the breed for others to see, entry fees, hotel fees, loss of income for myself and husband due to travel. Paid fees to look after other dogs at home. I am sure there is a lot more, not to mention the 12 months I have taken off work, to try to establish the breed and allocation of time to training, education. ( no income, yet still expenditure). After all this I am still only a tip of an iceberg as I have to do the whole process again for a diffferent size. AND on top of that when the bitch I have does have puppies ( assuming they are suitable show quality puppies) they will be on a lease basis to establish the breed in all states, so thats me still out of pocket as I have to pay a Insurance plan on these dogs too!! Now lets add all this up I stopped once I got to $60,000 I dont suppose in a litter of four I could ask $15,000 a pup now could I ?? Nah that would not even cover the base costs! lol Breeders do not make $$ they do it beacuse they love the breed and are proud to part of something that is so enjoyable and ingrained in them its almost a feeling I cant describe. I am lucky in that I have the experience of many great breeders who guide me in my breed and a few gurus here in Australia that have been very helpful. I feel for the cross bred breeders as they will never have the feeling of satisfaction that a pure bred breeder gets and the constant knowledge in that they are doing the best for their chosen breed. Its not about the money and never has been to the professionals, just ask the oldies! Better to find a good home than the almighty $$ J
-
In the USA they have Ugly Dog Comps which carry a lot of prize money!! As the hairless breeds can be known for their unique looks and often lack of, or primitive looking teeth, the lure of the hairless dog to breed with another dog to win these comps is sometimes all too much! Its pure greed on this account and so many Xolos and cresteds end up in pounds and shelters as a result. I have already had people in Australia calling and emailing me with oversized cresteds asking if they are a Xolo lol The almighty $$ is an evil thing at times!

Group 7 although I had a lady telling me they shpoud be in group 5 I thought WHAT ?? i will have to read up on them as i know nothing about them so wouldn't understand why she is saying that but i will definately keep an eye out for them i am sure they wont be hard to spot. I can only guess ther reason being that the FCI group is Group 5 and they are in that its called sptiz and Primitive types ( The Xolo are classed as a Primitive type ) so yes they should be in this group but unfortunately Australia doesnt have this group !

Emery 1st show is 3rd July then the Winer Festival the next one, poor bloody dog, at least he will be getting some experience I guess! Then he has three shows then the Brisbane Royal I entered him in, luckily have someone to show him there too! But best of all I will get to meet my guru who I have chatted to for 10 years, I got my first ever crested off, she is a great person and I am so excited I finally will get to meet her, she is in her seventies and its all her fault I have the Xolos! One day she said Xoloxyz and I said "what" she repeated it and I said what a stupid name and researched the breed, became so fascinated by the history and so involved in lists on them that the inevitable was only a matter of time lol Rach the showground is in Southern River ( backside of Canning Vale) down South St Nicholson Rd Wharton Rd end, I will have a chat to you Friday, I am sure we can organise something.
