Training To Use A Dog Door
Wazzat Xolo replied to puppymum's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have tried this - and he just looks at me as if I am being particularly mean taunting him with food he can't get to!! The problem I have is that he does know how the door works, and will usually go through with just a little bit of prompting, but will sometimes refuse to go through without a push, and he doesn't seem to be willing to go through when I am not there. Even when he really want's to go in or out, he will at times just sit looking forlornly through the door, as if he's convinced it's not working at the moment. And other times he will go through without any problems - when I was out the other night he went outside, and then couldn't come back in, so that when I arrived home he was outside, thoroughly miserable, thinking he was locked out! Puppymum With the dog being nine years old he may be affected by sight problems, the sun on the outside may cause shadows or cast light upon the dog door, inside light making it hard to see, have you tried fly strips of plastic instead of heavy plastic? maybe an idea to check his eyes as you have done all that most do for the ddor ( In my experience) We had a German Shepherd training for a Narcotic Detector who was perfect in every way but shadows on floors for some reason would intefere with his work, he was found to have eye problems, anyway just from my own experiences, an idea, all the best! Diesel Has Cushings And Seizures

Kiahma So sorry to hear, I know DW and a few others have had experience with Cushings I can only send hugs and support, and know that youwill make the right choices for your dear little friend. Hugs J -
There is no "test" for a breed assessment. The breed assessment is visual , the temperament test is seperate to any breed ID and is not conducted at the same time. You must first pass breed assessement, then book your temperament test. After all this time people still don't get it.... A happy waggy tail in a public place that greats a breed assessor will more than likely pass. If you use your brain when booking a breed assessor you will book one that passes them on a regular basis. I for one do get it, I think some people may be a tad one eyed! Each to their own but the breed assesors are real;ly not practising what they are paid to assess and preach. I think the point has been missed! The whole point of a breed assmt is too IDENTIFY is it needs to go FURTHER!! WHY risk ( what the Breed assmt managers) then later in some cases class as one of those very very "dangerous" APBT types. I mean its like meeting a Possible Child molesterer in a Maccas Car Park and I am sure that wouldnt happen! Well I know for a fact it doesnt happen! J
-
Well thats is totally silly and they are waiting for someone to highlight this to help the breed ! IVY where are you!! IF the so called dogs being assessed are so "Pit bully " and all the talk that surrounds these dogs , it would be plain common sense that for PUBLIC Safety it was not a good idea to meet in a PUBLIC Place frequented by families etc, a secure area should be needed . This to me states the APBT is not really a danger to the public! Just another big rigmarole of rubbish I feel in the whole RB serenade! Just my honest Opinion, seen to many APBT and crosses that are far to lovely to be labelled the way they are at times. J

I cannot see why the assesors want to asess this "very maybe likely a scary type Pit Bull " dog in a public area, namely a Mcdonalds Restaurant car park, where there are families etc! Isnt this a bit back to front if they dog may be a breed they decide must conform to laws etc. Can someone please explain this part ?? J

Bustam This is info I know about Sorry I dont know how to get the Web Link Thingy to direct link there! It seems STUPID to me to asess a Restricted Breed in a Bloody Mcdonalds Car park if as the Govt claims they are so incredibly dangerous!! Now thats the POT calling the Kettle ! Restricted Breeds and Declared Dangerous Dogs Important Information for owners of Restricted & Dangerous Dogs in NSW There are now increased requirements for the control of restricted breeds and dogs declared dangerous as well as higher penalties for not meeting the new safety obligations. These changes are in the interest of safety for the entire community. Restricted and Dangerous Dogs in NSW | PDF 167Kb http://cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Residents/d...s/dandogs11.pdf woohoo I did the link thingy !! J

There was a story in the West or Sunday times a few weeks back re an older dog operated on at Murdoch Vets, I know it wasnt Ziggy Chester ( EXCELLENT Eye Vet) but I cant recall the name of the vets, call there I am sure they will have info Good Luck J

Yellowgirl you should get the breeder you got the Cresteds off to vaccinate them, they get breeders rates, much cheaper J Good idea ... but I wouldn't ask her to do that They are my dogs now and it's up to me to make sure they are taken care of . Anyway, the amount I might save would probably cost me that in petrol to drive up there . Although, I do get her to trim their nails when we go up there for a visit heehee Yellowgirl Even I am not that forward to ask for the breeder to pay! lol I meant she may be able to include your vaccs with hers in a group discount!! I use an electric nail dremmel ( nail tech tool) to do all my dogs nails, its a great idea and they dont mind it as like the nail clippers. Allows a shorter nail and more easy access ( I feJ

Thats about what I paid last year! This year I got breeders discount and had all dogs done together ! The vets generally discount if more than one and you are a member of a Club BUT I find you have to ask. The reason I was told is that thye Yearly Vaccs are the vets bread and butter, the HW Vacc got me as the second vet charged on weight rather than a flat fee and as mine are small dogs I was paying a HUGE amount! Worth checking out these options with your vet and others nearby. Also some Vets have Vacc days where its super cheap, like a vaccinationathon!! J
