Beagle07 Posted June 28, 2007 Share Posted June 28, 2007 Hi All, Just acquired a new Beagle pup... How do you stop him playing (and possibly eating) his own poop? badboyz Posted June 28, 2007 Share Posted June 28, 2007 (edited) This is called coprophagia (do a search). It is a fairly common problem. Best advice I think is to clean it up asap. People have suggested changing diets, adding things to diet, but not sure of the success rate. I believe it is very common with beagles, although when I had them I never had the problem. oakway Posted June 28, 2007 Share Posted June 28, 2007 Try adding some (plain label) pinapple crushed in the dogs food and add some juice to if the dog will eat it. Remember they are dogs NOT people. Sometimes it is just a bad habit, much like humans who chew their fingernails etc. Sometimes it can be a dietary issue (but usually quite rarely). Sometimes it can be boredom. Sometimes it can be that they just like the taste. Best thing you can do is meet him with the pooper scoop as he drops it and hope that he grows out of it. Until then, be sure that he is wormed regularly and only socialises with other dogs/cats who are wormed regularly. Oh and do NOT let him lick you!!!! ETA: PS. I've got one who still enjoys doing it. She's 12 months old and as soon as she sees another dog "assume the position", she's there waiting. We call it POO-TUBE!! Only marginally nicer than kitty crunchies, doesn't smell as bad thankfully!! Teebs Posted July 3, 2007 Share Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) Only marginally nicer than kitty crunchies, doesn't smell as bad thankfully!! ohh, i dunno, At can be a poo eater, but he would rather kitty crunchies over dog poop! :rolleyes: ETA: Just want to say that it can be a medical condition - my old boy started doing it at about 12 years old, we found out that he wasnt processing his food, and was pooping it out - therefor eating it again. NewKid Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 It might be just a phase or a bad habit, but I would speak to your vet if he is constantly eating his own poo. Most dogs will have a go at other poo, but they don't regularly eat their own. If they are eating their own poo it might be due to an underlying problem & there will usually be other symptoms. Your vet should be happy to tell you over the phone if it sounds like a dietary/health problem. Best way to stop it is to make sure you pick up the poop soon after it has been deposited. I've heard it can be a dietary issue but we're not worried, our beagles get a great diet and it seems to be a common beagle-thing to do!! (I've no idea why!!) ravensmyst00 Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) Dogs eat poo, dirt, rocks etc basically as a way to replenish essential vitamins and minerals that they are lacking in their diet. Best suggestion would be to get a natural suppliment such as the Greenpet suppliment which contains dolomite a natural source of calcium and magnesium as well as other essential vitamins and minerals. Must be getting SOMETHING from their illicit munchies. Mind you, both are rather partial to a feed of horse food too, particularly boiled barley. They certainly get some strange ideas!
