She is five weeks old and smaller than she should be but she came from a malnutritioned mum. Anyway she tilts her head a little to one side and stumbles to the side easily, she was worse but with careful feeding she has improved. Also her back leg on one side is weaker and she will bunny hop. I first thought the hips may have been fused but they seem normal. I also have noticed that now she is trying to move them one at a time. She has become stronger! She is happy and smart and plays and is acutually toilet training super quick. I have a horrible feeling that she may have to be PTS as if it doesn't improve it may be an issue as she grows heavier in her body, but I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with something similar. From memory its a vitamin deficiency affecting the growing bones. First thing I thought.......... I have never seen rickets in a puppy but I have seen it in foals. They tended to fall over a lot, hobble around and tilt to one side. Its been a long long time and I am likely way off............but do a google search! pikespooches Posted March 5, 2008 Author Share Posted March 5, 2008 (edited) Have tried a google and just got lots of reading and when I put in legs I got a lot of porn sites LOL I am taking her to the vet tomorrow and I just dread what he is going to say to me. I have a loving home if she will have quality of life. And I too have wondered rickets etc and in a way hope that it is and the good diet that I am trying to give her now will amend a lot of this. She is stronger but still drunk!! She is cheeky though and wants to bite your toes lol The people want to surrender both their bitches. They realise they can't afford to keep them and get them desexed. But they want to keep two male pupies in their place. I can imagine 4 male entire dogs together!! I tried to tell them. pikespooches Posted March 6, 2008 Author Share Posted March 6, 2008 Vet said she has weird hips. I asked HD nad he said well yes. He said they should have knocked her on the head. I asked could she be like a dog with three legs? And he said two. I asked can I keep her a few more weeks to see if she improves? and he agreed. I feel she is stronger she can spin and yes still falls at times but just gets back up and goes. She is a tough little nut. But she is a rescue so unless her improvements are great and she will have a good quality of life I am not sure if it will be right to keep her alive. If you want to investigate I would ask your vet for a referral to an Orthopaedic Specialist as so far as I know (very expensive) surgery is really the only option for hip dysplasia. I would also speak to someone with much more knowledge than I could ever offer regarding nutrition. Doesn't sound like a coincidence. Good luck, I hope something can be done for the pup. I have some neck problems - can I come see you next time? Shame about the vet care but I hope the pup continues to improve and can go on to lead a healthy life after all she has been through and your efforts to give her a chance . DACHIE Posted March 15, 2008 Share Posted March 15, 2008 I breed miniature smooth dachshunds and feel sure that your puppy is suffering from neglect caused by poor diet , if this is the cause it will take many months of good food to improve and may always have a strange gait, if she is a happy little girl I would give her time. In my last litter November last year my very small dachshunds bitch producted seven puppies and the second last puppy was born with her front legs across her chest and they have stayed that way. I have done many hours of physo on her and taken her to three vets for their opinion, one vet was an authopedic vet all were not confident she would do well. I refused to give up on her and she is now 4 months old, she does pit pat around but is having a lovely life, I really do not feel we have a right to snuff out a life if there is not a very good reason to do this. This though is getting better and she will at times use a normal walking gait. I suspect poor nutrition and a possible injury. She does bump onto things sometimes as she propels herself and has not got the control thing happening. I think she will make it but I do not have specialist vets available out here and she is a little foster. She will need to be a house pet and her paymates wil have to be cats or a small dog lol. She is still improving but has probably plateaued. She is growing as well, all legs!! She also did something weird today that I don't know how to describe but another pup was trying to play with her and she chucked a hissy fit and was like a mad dog. She was barking up in the air, all reaction, and I think fear. Looked like Cujo when he had rabies!!I was wondering if she is missing a few screws or if it was a reaction to something that may have happened to her when very small before coming into care. Also looked like she was blind, at times it seems she has partial vision and others it is like she is fine. Very very strange!!
