Anyone Who Lives In Melbourne

Morrison will be 11 weeks this Saturday and he's got some issues with bitting; he mainly does it when he's excited (i don't blame him for wanting to be with us) and this behaviour annoys my sister, who says he's crazy. His excitment is heightened when he's upstairs, wanting to play (pouncing and nipping). I want him to like coming indoors but be calmer. We don't help the situation by going "Oh My God he's going to bite me" or "Why are you up here?"

I feel like no one else wants to deal with him when he's nutty and leaves it all to me cause he's my dog. I don't expect him to be perfect overnight, he's still a kid and he's still learnig.

We can only have him inside with his leash on - he's more placid and easier to control but I would really love to have him indoors and for us to control him upstairs.

Onto my actual question. Is there anyone from Melbourne who lives in the wester suburbs (I live in Caroline Springs), and knows of any puppy/obeience classes that are close to where I live.

Four Paws K9 Training would be the closest i'd recommend. Otherwise i'm not sure if Nekhbet on this forum runs puppy classes around there? Our closest class is South Melbourne so not the closest!

ETA I think a private lesson might also be of assistance to you to stop some of the problematic behaviour you're experiencing as well.

Yes all 11 week old pups mouth/ bite- and many of those pups continue to mouth into adulthood if not taught otherwise.

When he is bigger and ifyou feel like it, you could bring him along to Kepala once a month for the DOL get togethers. Kepala is a doggy country club setup at Diggers Rest (along the Calder freeway, just after the golf course), and there are grass runs, sand runs and a lagoon pool. He'll learn puppy manners - and important socialising skills - very quickly. PM me if you want details

Gosh ..... That's very very surprising, FC. You're the first person I have known of over a period of years who has not had anything but for Four Paws K9 Training.

I know of some people who left as well, perhaps they weren't Dolers. The classes were too big anyway. I regretted, my dog have one issue right now that I didn't get any support back when she's a pup even after approaching trainers multiple times. That's history now.

How large are the classes at Four Paws? Maybe I'd prefer a smaller class (for me), i guess I should go and see how a class is run .

I don't think they're that large and speaking with Trish I know that she's very conscientious about rostering extra instructors on so that larger classes can be split. I think she has about a 10 dog limit in her puppy classes.

Trish would welcome you. They are very professional and they have their "Introductory sessions" where they'll give you the information you need and you can see the classes running before you join.

I went to this pet store called "Best Freinds" suggested to me by flycow. They have puppy classes that are held in the store, class sizes are small from what I saw. I just went in to ask about the classes, which run for 5 weeks (costs $50 , so $10 for each session). They take puppies up until they are 16 weeks old - Morrison is 11 weeks, so if I want to book classes I should do it n the next few days.

My family is pushing for it (it's close and relatively cheap) but I want to check out other places. And I'm not really sure that five weeks will be enough.

I've just dropped in and read the posts quickly but having Labs I find obedience / good behaviuor is mandatory. And I find that 5 weeks isnt enough, manners and good behaviour are a lifelong thing for dogs and people alike

Hi i_heart. I gave you the link to Four Paws' website (which in turn will give you contact numbers and other info) in my earlier post on page 1 (post # 9). If you click on the link I've put there it will take you to their website.

Four Paws have more than just puppy classes, they have the levels above that and above that and above that, so you can continue your pup's training for as long and as far as you like.

I've never heard of "Best Friends" puppy classes, so I wouldn't know what the qualifications/experience of the person running it was. But I do know that of Four Paws, which is why I can confidently recommend them. And I'm cautious about giving out recommendations if I'm not certain of them.
