Casey & BC Kiara Posted July 27, 2010 Share Posted July 27, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I'm brand new to these forums so I apologise in advance if I have posted this in the wrong section or done something wrong. I am currently living in Brisbane and will be moving to Albury in Nov/Dec/Jan. I have a little border collie puppy named Kiara who is currently 18 weeks old. I have enrolled her into Urban Dog Training and will have done the following courses (hopefully) before I move: Puppy School (done) Advanced Puppy School (currently completing) Clicks and Tricks Off Leash Ultimate Recall They also have agility courses but I don't think I will have time before I move So basically, what is available in Albury in the way of training, socialisation and dog sports? Training Can anyone recommend a good trainer? I will only go to a positive reinforcement trainer. I am a psychology student so I completely agree with these methods on and will not budge on this. Especially since Kiara is often on the timid/ shy side and was a completely different dog for about a week after my old housemate hit her (!!!!) I would like to build on or develop what I will have already taught her. Socialisation In Brisbane I take Kiara to a puppy playgroup run by my trainers - is there anything like this in Albury? Even things like dog parks or cafes/restaurants that allow dogs. Dog Sports What dog sports are big in Albury. I'm not so keen on Obedience but like the idea of herding, agility or flyball. I haven't done any of these in Brisbane as she is still a pup but would like to get her involved as both her mum and dad are awesome herders. Anything else? Is there anything else you can fill me in on about "dog life" in Albury? I know there is a big doggie get together in Albury- can't remember what its called- but i have heard some scary things about it and wouldn't go there! Too uncontrolled for my liking. Edslaine Posted July 27, 2010 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Welcome to Albury - well soon anyway. Cosmolo is talking about Albury Wodonga Dog's Breakfast at an off leash park down near the Murray River. You can google it for info. I took Edward there quite a few times but as Cosmolo says it's 'uncontrolled'. Sometimes 20-30 dogs and their owners. Sunday mornings 10ish - once a month - sausgae sizzle and then a walk along the river - on lead. Some very nice people to talk to and they collect donations for the RSPCA and Albury Dog Rescue. Albury dog Rescue are a great bunch of people. In fact there's a Trivia Night happening this weekend. You can google ADR too. There's another positive reinforcement trainer at Howlong - I met her at the Million Paws Walk - I'll hunt out her name for you. There's a fenced off leash park in Wodonga - close to the High St exit of the freeway. Albury's Kennel Club has just changed its training to positive only and there is a really great lady there who has Aussie's (I "think" her name is Sam) who is a guru apparently when it comes to positive training. They do traditional obedience and agility. Angelsun lives quite close to Albury and she teaches people about Rally Obedience - not sure when/if she is having another session in Albury. She is lovely too. Albury Wodonga Flyball Club are a great group of people but I think you have to be really keen to compete to sign up with them - not a problem of course if you are keen to compete. You can't just go for fun if you know what I mean. Great, great people though. No herding that I'm aware of and also no tracking. Otherwise loads of lovely places to walk and quite a dog friendly community for a rural area. I love Albury and look forward to meeting you once you've settled in. Yes that is her. She is lovely! I used to run into her and her husband a couple of times a week over Summer as we were walking our dogs at the same time, depending on the route I took. They definitely have agility training - Wednesday nights or every second Wednesday night. You need to be at brown level to do it I think but yes the Club can tell you. The Club here is really nice, lots of lovely people. Morsha68 on here will be able to tell you a bit about it as she is quite heavily involved. I had grand plans of doing it with Marie or Daphne BUT it will probably be a little harder now that we're out of town as we're not at the right level of obedience yet Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dodo Posted July 27, 2010 Share Posted July 27, 2010 Yackandandah and Beechworth in Vic not far from Albury are smaller towns that are dog friendly. Dogs are welcome outside the coffee shops and bakeries etc. A lovely lake to walk around in Beechworth but dogs have to be on a leash. There is a dog friendly coffee shop in Wodonga outer area.Not sure about others in Albury Wodonga. There are several club members that do herding don't know where but someone at the club will be able to help you when you get here. There is also tracking, again I'm not sure where but there are members of the club who do it and can help you if you decide to try it out. As Poodlefan/Trisven said, Sam is an excellent trainer. I don't really do obedience training more behavioural problems, or if someone wants private lessons. There are walking groups. The group at one of the local vets, when I was able to go, I found very good for socialising/ introducing my Greys that have only had a kennel life, into the real world. She is lovely too. King Valley Kennel Club is holding a Rally Obedience seminar September 11-12 in Myrtleford which isn't terribly far from Albury. We also are starting to hold agility training. He keeps calling me with reports like "oh it's -2 degrees here and the whole town is frosty and foggy" he doesn't seem to mind it but it's pretty scary when I tell him all our temperatures are in the 20's. I was actually looking at the "Life Lessons on Leash" website but because I'm not familar with the area I deemed it too far away lol. Good to hear about the Albury Kennel Club change - I'll have a look into them too. I'm not too sure what rally obedience is ... brand new to the dog thing really but I shall google it. With sports I was more keen to take her for fun, I'm not really interested in competing - unless of course she gets really into it, but I think I'll let her decide that one lol. Sam Field is not and instructor at Albury and Border Kennel Club ,but is a valued member and mentor on the new way that Albury and Border Kennel Club is taken . Albury and Border kennel Club has only changed it beginners course to REWARD BASED training ,and is hoping that the rest will follow in time. I drive on my own, and I'd probably prefer to do it over 3 days, especially with dog/s on board. There's quite a lot of dog-friendly accommodation in NSW - although a little harder to find one night stay. I tend to use stayz or takeabreak and select pet-friendly, then the type of accommodation - e.g. self-contained... Stayz Take a Break - pet friendly is in the 'holiday experiences' menu.
