My greyhound girl Lilly was diagnosed with a heart murmur when she was desexed too (vet thinks a grade 2 or 3) - not bad enough to warrant treatment or further investigation yet.

We were told to look for changes in behaviour - not exercising as much, getting tired quicker etc. And the development of a cough is a big sign.

It is very scarey and upsetting when you first fins out , but don't stress out too much just be aware of it and get her checked regularly .

Molly ( Pom/chi ) was diagnosed with slight heart murmur at around 2 years of age . She is now 14 and started heart medication about 2 years ago .

the main signs you look for are lethargy , coughing , panting .

These are all questions you should discuss with your vet.

Now's the time to get that weight off her. Like people, dogs don't benefit from being fat.

Oh yes - I agree - I was devestated when I found out but just be aware of the signs, it may never develop any further.

Every time Lilly is in at the vets I get them to have a listen.

PF is right too - time for a diet

Im sorry that your girl has a heart murmur, its never nice to find out somethings wrong with your fur-kid.

My youngest boy who is 4 was diagnosed with a heart murmur last year, but we have had no problems with his health at all yet, he is very fit and healthy and enjoys a good run :)

Definitely get any excess weight off, it's not only bad for the heart but can cause other health problems.

No reason why a 2 yr old dog should be overweight - it's different when they are old and develop other issues.

Check the fat content of everything you give her - you'd be really surprised about the content of some things like biscuits - some brands have very high fat contents.

I hope you are walking her daily and for at least an hour, that's what young dogs need.

Get the weight off and keep her on the lean side. I would also ask your vet for a referral to a specialist and have the heart checked properly, that way you know exactly what you are dealing with, the grade of the murmur and the specialist will be able to tell you if there are any other problems.
