You have huge costs, many of my pups came from imported parents, I would never begrudge what I paid for them. I think to pay $1200 for a pup of quality, is a bargain. My smoking husband pays nearly $100 for a carton of cigarettes, for crap. I think, a lot of those money tight buyers, should get a dog from the pound or animal welfare agencies, they only want all the money in their own pockets. So thank you all, for giving so much happiness. Sorry but i think alot of ppl who get pound dogs generally just want to save a life and would prefer to do that rather then get a dog who will already go to a good home of a breeder's choice. Just because ppl buy pound dogs doesnt mean they want 'all the money in their own pockets". And some ppl just cannot afford $1500-2000 for a dog. ellz Posted March 21, 2012 Share Posted March 21, 2012 I agree, many people have very valid reasons for getting a pound puppy or a rescue dog and I am happy when they are happy. On the other hand, I do get VERY shirty with people who say they are getting a pound puppy because of their dislike or distrust of dealing with breeders. So being the intelligent woman I am, I let my heart rule my head and put my name against the poor frightened, smelly little guy... I intended to get another purebred stafford but it just did not work out like that at the time.. I saved him for the same reason anyone gets a dog - deep down I wanted another one, he was there and he needed me as much as I needed him... Just purely interested... Hi PW. I'm motivated purely by my love of dogs. I work with problem dogs all day and I work in a shelter. I believe that someone has a right to purchase a dog that has been well bred, raised and cared for. I want to be able to breed an example of my breed which I perceive as 'right' but also has been raised properly. With behavioural and socialisation intent in mind. I think there are not enough GOOD breeders out there, and rather than complaining about the 'bad' breeders, I want to show them what a 'good' breeder does and why that is better, because once they've spoken with me/ seen my dogs, they'll understand :) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So thank you all, for giving so much happiness. What an outrageous statement - who wants all the money in their own pockets? People who buy from pounds and shelters? There are all sorts of reasons that people get dogs from pounds and shelters and I suspect that being a tightwad has little to do with it. More likely those people want to give a home to a dog who needs it and some end up spending $1000's beyond the original purchase price anyway. Easy matings, easy whelpings, seemingly magically the puppies rear themselves on shit food and he can sell them without qualms with no back up and very little knowledge????? i agree, my brother has two little crossbred fluffies, the bitch a pom cross is around 7 years old and has had eight litters in a row,puppies raised outside, very basic bedding,never had any problems with whelpings, except the last litter when 4 pups out of 5 died first few days, so they charged more than normal price for the survivng puppy trying to make some money, and to be honest they have made a few thousand out of their dogs because they are backyard puppy farmers IMO.. they still won't desex her, she is probably pregnant again by now, they have always done this with any dogs they have had, bloody annoying.... LizT Posted March 21, 2012 Share Posted March 21, 2012 It is incredible isn't it.....a pet shop can charge $1000 for a cross bred mutt with no health testing of it or parents and nobody batts an eye lid. Responsible breeders get boohoo'd for asking that amount after doing all testing on parents and pups. Oh well,,,,,our aussie babies will have extra special homes<g> Oh...but Pet Shops have overheads to cover, they are a business. Home breeders don't have any costs, because they do it at home. No matter how hard some ppl work and save it is just not possible. Not all dogs sell for this much, its very possible to pick a breed within a price range one can afford! Plus slightly older pups that have been run on but not worked out for showing can sometimes be abit cheaper. For example I have a 16 week old pup here waiting for his perfect home and hes for sale for half the price of what pointer pups normally sell for and he would probably be the same price as a rescue pup, I just want to find the perfect home for him!!! ETA. I have NOT made a cent from my first litter, I had stud fee, c-section, puppy vacs and rego feeding ect and I ran two out of the seven on! Sayly Posted March 21, 2012 Share Posted March 21, 2012 Mum and I worked out that with all the problems we have had, Rosie (for those that don't know, the only pup we got from Ruby's two litters) cost us $5000 so far and she's only 3 weeks. For one puppy. That won't be sold. :laugh: Not to mention the time taken off work, the petrol to and from the vets, the numerous sleepless nights. I can imagine that would be the case Lindsay! I was watching your posts on the Breeders forum and was so sorry all the other little ones had not made it I love the looks of Ruby and it must have been heartbreaking for you not to have a heap of tiny Ruby's. The little one is going great-guns though and will be your ❤ pup.
