Perhaps volunteer programs that don't just walk dogs, but spend time on a quick training session to make the dog more rehomable. A dog could learn a lot in 14 days. For cats, socialisation time. Her Majesty Dogmad Posted May 30, 2012 Share Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) A vet attached or next to the pound with some cages that were warm where an injured animal could receive appropriate treatment immediately. All animals coming in would be checked for any ailments etc and treated immediately. Pregnant females, dogs hit by cars or injured by other dogs etc, dogs with manky eyes - all would receive treatment and not have to endure another 7-14 days in pain or discomfort. A temperament assessment area, well away from everything else with people trained in assessment and the assessment printed out and attached to the pen. Pens for single animals only - unless they arrived as a pair. A photographer - to get the best pics possible ... A rehoming coordinator to interview people and assess what they are looking for and making a match if possible and providing a pack to take home with lots of info such as housetraining etc etc. Edited May 30, 2012 by dogmad Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Visited RSPCA contracted, outside contract and council operated. I have so many thoughts will get on later and write a few, just in Bathurst and Dubbo tomorrow so on my iPhone. Alkhe Posted May 30, 2012 Share Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) Decent opening hours that enable people to get to them to view potential pets, check to see that their lost pet isn't there, etc. That includes weekends, and not just 1 hour from 9-10am or something ridiculous like that. 9-5 on weekdays is not adequate. Also the name...seems simple, but pound or dog pound has very negative connotations. Shelter I believe leads ppl to think about adoption, rescue, better facilities. Some from me that would make pounds/shelters operate better in general is the attitude and qualifications of the staff. Often there is one or a few main employees who are catalyst for change. They need genuine animal loving people with qualifications. Also the pound/shelter should be the first point of call for pet owners in the community they should be able to advise on barking, escaping, etc and providing advice and options to prevent problems rather than handing out infringement notices. Vet treatment when needed, even if this means a consult over the phone for treatable conditions such as dry eye. Pain relief for dogs who are injured/very sick and waiting to be pts. As Dogmad has said, a Vet surgery on site would be unreal! Access to qualified and recommended behaviourists to assess dogs who’s owners are dishonest with the reason for surrender which eliminates the dogs chances of adoption/rescue. Also for dogs who may have shut down in the pound, display any behaviours which are difficult to assess/work with. There may be behaviourists and trainers who are happy to donate some time every now and then. Heating for dogs in winter in cold areas. Pre surrender interviews and advice on working with behavioural issues which lead to surrender, new baby arriving, having to move, going on holidays, can’t afford to keep the dog etc etc etc. Strong, experienced and devoted volunteer group who are supported and appreciated by staff. Experienced temp testers who staff/rescues and the public can rely upon to give an honest, individual assessment identifying any or all issues in the pound environment. As others have said enrichment programs, exercise and training programs. While the dog is impounded we should see an improvement in this area. I would LOVE to gather info on "where did you originally get your dog"? when they are being surrendered to identify which sources of supply are of most concern in the area. Education to address this. A lot more marketing and promotion of rescued pets in the community. Don’t get me started on a rehoming centre! separate from or alongside the impounding facility. I had a look at the architects site , they have some more recent projects and have also designed some shelters that were not built. ARQArchitects. I would love to design a pound or shelter, there is so much that could be done to make it more comfortable and healthy for the dogs to be there. A modern shelter should be built to facilitate all the activities that other people have spoken about. Instead of being just places to store dogs in.
