GoldenGirl85 Posted August 19, 2012 Share Posted August 19, 2012 I've just had Tess at the after hours vet, early this morning she seemed as though she was gagging on something, she was breathing fine and wasn't in any distress apart from the gagging so I decided to just 'wait and see' later in the day it was apparent something was wrong, she was walking funny and her breathing was off, so we took her to the vet thinking maybe she had a tick Anyway long story short he doesn't think it was a tick, he had a good look on her and couldn't find one, but her symptoms don't match up with that, so now he is thinking she might have a neurological problem. She seems to have hyperreflexia (overactive reflexes) her gait is stiff and seems a little jarred at times, even when she is sitting she is constantly picking up one of her front feet, then the other. She doesn't seem to be in pain or have any balance issues Anyone got any ideas? she is 11 this year Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm not thinking clearly enough at the moment to even think of what tests would be run in a human If she is still like this tomorrow I'll make an appointment at the vet/chiro I've been taking her too Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Is there ANY chance she could have ingested any sort of toxin? ..anything different yesterday/this morning? paint/weedicide/insecticides/building supplies/ anything??? Just thinking 'out loud' ... GoldenGirl85 Posted August 19, 2012 Author Share Posted August 19, 2012 We sprayed for weeds a couple of weeks ago now, but the dogs were kept inside for the day nothing else different apart from her behaviour She doesn't seem distressed or anything, I think whatever it is it's only affected her nervous system Come to think of it her calcium, sodium and potassium should be up if it is something to do with her nervous system.... westiemum Posted August 19, 2012 Share Posted August 19, 2012 Come to think of it, I think you need an internal medicine/neuro specialist... if the symptoms persist or get worse and the vet isn't helping don't delay - get to a specialist fast - for example if its a neuro-bacterial infection the sooner you get to it the better the outcome... noisymina Posted August 19, 2012 Share Posted August 19, 2012 Does not really sound like tick - but my vet recently said that one place they can hide is around the mouth/lips. How long did you keep the dogs away from the area that was sprayed? I also think bloods should be done. May show nothing - but then, thay might! JulesP Posted August 19, 2012 Share Posted August 19, 2012 My dog with a liver shunt has had similar symptoms when her liver has been overloaded and can't expel the toxins. GoldenGirl85 Posted August 19, 2012 Author Share Posted August 19, 2012 She seems a lot better today, if you didn't know her you wouldn't even pick up that she was at the vet yesterday. Her gait is still a little 'stiff' but other than that she seems a lot better. She does seem a bit uncomfortable when she is sitting so I wonder if she has a pinched nerve there. I'll make an appointment with her vet chiro and see what he can do for her Weird, I'll be keeping a close eye on her, poor old duck, this is the first 'my dog is getting old' moment we've had Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
