Placental Seperation

I have a Bullmastiff Bitch that is 56 days pregnant. Yesterday When I woke she had a black discharge, which indicates the puppies are separating from the placenta.

I went to my vet who checked the fetal heartbeats and her progesterone levels. The fetal heartbeats were ok, however the progesterone level was only 15. They had hoped it to be at least over 20 and in a perfect world to be about 38.

After discussions with my specialist we have started her on oral progesterone to either bring her levels up or at least stop them dropping any more. If I can get her through to day 59 which is Wednesday then the babies may have a good chance.

The discharge all setttled down yesterday, only to start up again during the night. My specialist called this morning to see how she is going and explained that this could just be more coming down from yesterday or could be another detachment.

I am incredibly worried, but trying to remain positive as have heard of a few other bitches that have gone through the same thing recently and all has worked out fine.

The vets are saying that the extreme heat we are having could be contributing to puppies being born premature at the moment. So make sure you keep you girls in aircon in the extreme heat if you can.

I would be interested to hear from others that have gone through this and the outcomes.

Cheers

I had this with my white litter about 10 days before they were due. Vet didn't give me anything for her - just a wait and see or we could go in and get them options!

The whole litter were born alive a couple of days after their first due date.

I am looking forward to the replies, I am interested to learn more from this. I can only speak from discharge at day 39 and we lost everything, good luck, for the next few days and may you have a healthy litter .

My last litter my bitch had a green discharge about 2 weeks out from whelping. It steadily increased (as did my panicking) until day 59 when we did an elective c-section. During that 2 week period I had her scanned many times and the puppies looked fine. I don't think she was given any meds and when the c-section was done all the pups were fine and no sign of where all the green was coming from

Another day down now only 5 to go to be out of the woods. I took her to the vet this morning and the fetal heart rates had come up a bit, which is great as they were 208 yesterday and today are sitting around 240. Her progesterone levels are high again, so looking a lot more positive.

Going to be a long 5 days but I am staying positive it will all work out.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences, it truly helps to hear that others have been through similar experiences with mostly positive outcomes.

I will add the negative experience.....

My girl had slight discharge at around 56 days. She had been progesterone supplemented from day 28 onwards. (from an unsuccessful previous pregnancy where puppies aborted at 7.5 weeks)

She had a weekly ultrasound to make sure puppies were viable.

Ultrasound 5 days before due date - everything fine. Next day - slight temperature drop. Vet checked and said to keep monitoring.

Next day - no change.

Puppies all delivered dead by caesarean. Placenta separation was diagnosed. They had been dead for around 24 hours when delivered. They were smaller than the normal sized whelp and at least two of the three, if not all three would not have survived if they had been delivered earlier when the temperature dropped. Vet who delivered them said that they wouldn't have survived on the due date if they were alive - they were way too small. We suspect the placenta started coming away earlier in the pregnancy, making the puppies not develop fully.

Was very sad. My girl mourned for about 6 weeks. (I didn't coddle her). She was desexed a month or two later after we had done lots of testing. Took her 10 months to get back to her normal self.

It doesn't always end well.

eta - all the best with your litter - you are doing all the right things and the progesterone will most likely do what is needed. My girl's case was way more complicated than most.

My vet did advise me to take the litter sooner rather than later so we did an elective c-section at day 59. In the end my concern was for the bitch and she had a green discharge pouring out of her. Day 59 they are usually viable and I decided it was in my bitchs best interests to do it early. I was lucky, they were all fine

So Sorry to hear your sad outcome with your girl:( It is not easy breeding dogs and can be ever so heartbreaking and all we can do is our best and hope for a positive outcome.

All still going well here. Checking progesterone levels every 2 days and fetal heartrates which have been good. No more discharge since last Saturday now. We have started tappering her off her progesterone today but her progesterone levels are still very high. I speak to Phil my specialist in the morning but looking like we will be doing an elective C section on Friday. Still holding my breath and praying, will be so relieved when I can breathe again!

We got there!! We had 12 babies delivered via Caesar, 8 survivors! There was a mushy puppy and also a cleft palate we did not revive and then a 5 wk size fetus and a little girl that we just could not get going. Mum and bubs doing well :)

Well done and congratulation on the new litter.
