Please know we are all thinking of Zeus,& his family.

Devote your time to his recovery & update when you can. Dont feel obliged to leave Zeus when he needs you more.

My thoughts exactly.

So relieved there has been some improvement and hoping that this will continue.

He is home and his walk/gait is nearly back to normal. No one is positive of what it was a few ideas, but the main thing is he is better and hopefully he will fully recover but he may stay like this which is about 90% and im okay with that.

  • 1 month later...

Update,

Zeus has made a full recovery, looks like it was the barbiturates a bit to heavy for him but there not 100% sure. Jazz had the lump removed and it was a cyst as sometimes the needle aspiration is wrong but pathology tests confirmed it.

She has had her 10mth check up today and all is good no recurrence near the original area blood tests were clear no new lumps. She has a 6month ultrasound and xray in 8 weeks (12month anniversary)and if that's clear she will go out to 3 monthly visits and 12 monthly ultrasounds. If its clear it looks like she has beaten it but she will have to remain on the tablet chemo for her whole life just to be sure.

Its terrible going to SASH for these check ups you are just waiting for them to come out and say its back. But to date it hasn't and fingers crossed in 8 weeks when she has the xrays and ultrasounds its clear none in the organs then we can really start to relax. Its funny her 1 back leg is huge they were all laughing about it today at sash it looks like Popeyes forearm and her front shoulders are huge as well. There all amazed at how well she is doing and how happy she is.

It is such a worry. But on the plus side, you know it's been the best choice for both dogs.

I am thrilled to get this update. Paws crossed for another successful visit.

Ongoing best wishes for all of you.

I just read this whole thread and I am super glad that both your dogs are well! I have a gsd girl will make sure I keep her away from bpa toys and spot on in the future... all the best I think you should post an updated photo of your girl :)

Hi Jessica M,

I will get a photo up this weekend. Ive spoken to a heap of vets and specialists regarding this cancer in GSD's and it is such a major cause of death its ridiculous. I was just unlucky she got it so young but was lucky it was in the muscle and not in one of the 4 organs it attacks. With them its usually too late once they show signs of the cancer as its painless until its to late. The specialists have said that the chew toys or the spot on or the yearly injections or the yearly heart worm was not the cause of this cancer it was genetics, don't get me wrong I have changed her diet to all natural plus herbs (natural Vet) and she gets a tablet for flea treatment and she is going on monthly heartworm and no yearly injections she will get a blood test to test her antibodies. But Jazz just loves her chew toys so I have left them but encourage the kong full of dates which she likes.

Unfortunately due to this issue with GSD,s I wont get another after she goes and also I don't think I will ever be able to attach to another one again as I will always be judging them against her as she has totally stolen my heart, even more know since seeing her drive and will to live and never give up attitude she is truly a special special dog.

When I decided to foster greyhounds and Stan walked into my life I was smitten with the breed. After researching and finding that greyhounds are one of the few large breed dogs with no genetic disorders and a lifespan of 12 to 14 years I thought YES this is the breed for me, until Osteosarcoma reared it's ugly head :( Stan will always be the greyhound that started my passion for the breed and I will always have them now until the day I fall off my perch, I'm not young I am 50 years old. Whatever the future holds for us greyhounds are now in my blood, I won't not have one for the fear of what might happen.

All I'm saying is never say never Dave.

This would be your choice, Dave.

But very often the Universe makes a different choice.....

Without being mushy, I read such a thread last night.. Such a love story... you just never know.

True never say never but I will not be replacing her with another GSD maybe a dog or 2 between then I will be ready to have another GSD. Its weird but I would feel that I was disrespecting her if I got a GSD to replace her. Maybe an Anatolian shepherd between. But hopefully that decision is way off and she sees old age, she is 6 1/2 know.

It's not weird at all, I had the exact same feeling when I gave my old ridgeback cross his wings at age 16. I actually didn't want another dog ever, my old boy had ridden shotgun through thick and thin for a large chunk of my life and getting another dog just didn't seem right. Then 9 months later my bright idea of fostering came about, I thought this is the go I don't have to commit to another dog...pffft epic fail lol.

Yep that decision will be many years off Dave, your girl has a lot more living to do yet :)
