WARNING – ATTEMPTED THEFT – BURPENGARY (Nth Brisbane) –

TWO men both of stocky build and of Asian appearance were seen by the owner at their gate holding a MUZZLE, LEAD & STEAK trying to entice an ENITRE MALE ENGLISH POINTER who had alerted his owner by barking at the men. When the owner approached the men they commented ‘THAT'S A NICE AGGRESSIVE DOG YOU HAVE THERE, WHAT BREED?’.

The owner told them they were trespassing and asked them to leave, which they did, she did not hear a car but was distracted checking her yard for possible bait. She has since made her yard more secure with locks and cameras, POLICE and local council have been informed .

PLEASE take these warnings seriously, everything we post has been verified with the witness directly. Please take preventative action to secure your yards – for info and ideas please see

People think it doesn't exist cause there are irresponsible people out there who have a dog not properly contained and out of embarrassment or ignorance say it was stolen.

If a dog gets loose, they end up claimed by passer by, impounded and sometimes put to sleep or run over if they don't just return home. If a dog gets stolen it could be for fights and baiting, deep seeded psychotic issues, or breeding. these animals can face extreme torture before death.

Far less occurrence of actual theft but it does happen and people need to stop just assuming it was owner fault cause if it isn't then the situation will most likely end very bad for the dog.

There is a survey going at the moment to try and get more information from pet owners about issues surrounding dog theft and prevention... It might be the same group mentioned in the original post.

From the facebook post:

NATIONAL DOG THEFT SURVEY 2013 !!

QADTFR was recently granted not-for-profit status - our first task as an organisation is to conduct a survey which is designed to collect reliable data on the extent to which dog theft is an issue in each state and territory in Australia and what impact this is having on our communities. The survey is anonymous and will be analysed by persons with tertiary studies in the social sciences and the law. A report will be prepared and released to the public in early 2014. This is our first real step in making a big difference in keeping our dogs safe from theft. Please help us and spend 10 minutes completing this survey.

These things get posted on FB all the time, often with just a town name change.

Regardless of whether dogs are being stolen or not, they should be kept contained behind strong, tall fences with locks.

Yes I know these get posted all the time but this is an organization who are in contact with actual owners, not just copy and paste from other stories. 80% of people live in rentals and not allowed to re-fence existing fences. and bolt cutters make easy work of pad locks and chains.

this organization has a section on theft prevention and containment advice. Fences and locks are great cameras and knowing your neighbors also helps.

And people think it doesn't exist. Lol

Of course dogs are being stolen all the time, but generally they will be dogs that are in some way valuable, entire pure breds, easy to sell SWFs, whatever "look" is popular with BYB customers at the time, dogs for work like piggers etc. Mangy looking, scared, runty bully type? Not so much....

And yes, lots of people contain their dogs poorly and then cry theft when their dog scales the 4 foot fence to nail the bitch on heat down the road....

The attempted theft of the English Pointer happened...responsible registered breeder with good containment fences. Those blokes waited until 2 cars left for work...didn't realise the lady of the house was still at home. It was reported to police. Not all these stories are made up.

Heard from a reliable source about a house being targetted in Gymea the other week - owner rang the council about painted arrows on fence and driveway, thinking they aere going to do some sort of work... council person he ended up put through to simply asked him if he owned a particular breed of dog, and when he told them he did, he was asked to lock the dog inside if he went out, as there have been a few thefts of that breed in that council area.

It does happen - but I don't think it's as rampant an issue as social media will have us believing...

Yeah thats the problem media blows an issue out of proportion, and incompetent people claim theirs as stolen resulting in those with legitimate thefts go ignored allowing these people to continue on under the cover of ignorance.

Sad.
