Hi all,

I was just reading on an international Husky forum a post from someone who has just bought a 6 week old Husky x Malamute from a pet shop in Brisbane :mad - I thought this sort of thing was illegal here. Does anyone know if this is okay in QLD?

I know the name of the pet shop and happy to post if this is okay.

If they are taking pups form mum and not socialising them with people its probably better for the pup and the family to take it at 6 weeks than leave it another two without handling and playing enough with humans.

My first girl was from a pet shop, she was (maybe) six weeks old when we got her. She is INCREDIBLY high drive and highly strung, but nothing bothers her, she is at home in any social situation - doggy or human.

It's far from ideal, but not the end of the world.

Someone I used to work with got one just after it was weaned from a (now closed) pet shop in Geelong. I saw her some months later and asked how her dog was and she said no matter what they did, they couldn't control the dog, couldn't teach it manners, it was just feral.

I"m currently fostering a pup who was sold at 6 weeks. I've always heard and understand that pups should be with their litter mates til 8 weeks due to fear periods and also to get the socialisation that is provided by being with same age pupies. Now I GET IT! I can see in this little one what that time with litter mates does. It's not the end of the world that she's left them, but I can certainly see what she has missed out on by being removed at 6 weeks.

I was trying to chase up whether the law here in Vic only applied to pet shops etc (and registered breeders via the CoE), or if it applied to BYB's as well. Still a bit unclear about that.
