Hand-held and I do have lightroom 5. Will have to play around with it. That's jpeg though only started shooting raw recently

I usually experiment with Sharpness/Noise Luminance in Lightroom - Set the Sharpness to about 70, then adjust Noise Luminance to approximately 30. With a darker photo you may do better with less sharpness, so have a play around.

This is a bit lossy as it's on Facebook, but you can see the sky is a fair bit smoother. I took that on a Sony RX100 cybershot, so you're off to a better start with your 70D:

Upping the expose will help too. Underexposed images keep much more detail than overexposed, so I bet you can get that beach scene looking really good really easily. I tend to lower the exposure on a lot of photos then bring them back in Lightroom.

Great, you can see the improvement. Also have a tinker with the exposure, highlights, and shadows to lighten it up ;)

I'm a member of this photography group in Perth. I've learnt a lot in the last 6 months:

Next meet is in Hillary's for the fireworks on Saturday night.

I did all that :)
