There are a lot of drawbacks to living in the country and a lack of recreational things to do is one of them. WHAT IS AQUAPAWS?! It sounds like so much FUN!!! :o)

Aquapaws is a swimming/hydrotherapy/rehabilitation center located on the Mornington Peninsula. People mainly use it for swimming and conditioning type things. I personally go there every week to build muscle, fitness and conditioning. It is terrific for hydrotherapy and targeted strengthening.

Kepala, which is what we have been talking about, is a 'doggy country club' with runs and pools you can book out for yourself to use. It is a great place and I go there with friends to let our dogs have a safe and fun run. It is a bit far for me so I rarely go, I do wish it was closer!

n_n I just booked an hour for next week! Just the runs, don't want to overload her with too many new things. If it goes well, we'll be back for swimming.

Aquapaws I was going to use their runs because they're free and lockable but they're a 2 hour drive so I think kepala will be cheaper cause they're so much closer so less fuel...They both sound like such great facilities, I wish more like this existed around Australia for people.

I'm not sure what generic search terms you could use for finding similar ones in nsw? I found one called "k9 swim" at 388 The Driftway, Londonderry NSW 2753 <- dunno how close that is to you Roka

I think the "Don't worry they're friendly" type comments is just to let you know their dog doesn't actually have the intent to harm you or your dog rather than an excuse or rationale.

Sometimes dogs get away from people, and hearing "Don't worry they're friendly" is a darn sight better than "It's aggressive".

But I hear you, as a previous owner of a dog who was rushed at many a time that "Don't worry" tag line pee'd me off in the moment.

We feel it is important for people to learn how to behave with their dogs in public... These days with smaller backyards and less places to give your dogs room to stretch out and be a dog it can be difficult and confronting for people as to how to cope with others.

There are other facilities like Kepala... we run a training school which is set up like a private dog park.... we teach people how to socialise their dogs and how to build skills to be safe in off leash areas or walking in the street....

We have an indoor training room, outside all weather training ground and we have security mesh paddocks.... We have been considering running some one day workshops on the weekends for the people who live further away....

Went to a DOL meet at Kepala when I was over in Melbourne at the right time .. years ago now, but I still remember what a great place it is. And of course when I went, all the dog owners were great as it was a DOL meet :D .

We still go to those monthly! Great fun!

You should hear the whining and carrying on when we pull in. Good heavens... Gus would move in in a heartbeat. Should they need boarding ever that is where they will be off to. For sure.

Oh no that picture is awesome. Now I can't wait until next week! Normally I half dread our outings but I think I am cautiously optimistic this time around! Shame the outdoor pool is currently closed.

*jiggles impatiently for the next week*

I'm already thinking going every Saturday or maybe every other Saturday? and there's DOL meets? I don't think she'd be ready for that but so cool.

*cautious hopeful optimism*

We are now booked btw :) The receptionist seems really nice and told us to enter through the first gate cause it's our first time. She picked a quiet time with minimal bookings for us. I hope the dog enjoys this.

You'll find the information about the DOL meets in the DOL social events forum here.

One of the two dogs I had with me the time I went was somewhat dog-reactive (BC), but the other DOLers were great in making room for him - he was able to enjoy that lagoon pool, and also to have runs in the sand run and the grass runs.

It's probably just as well I live on the other side of Bass Strait, or I'd definitely be a frequent Kepala user.
