Leftover Medication

When our older dog died a few weeks ago we had over a months worth of medication leftover. My plan is to return it to the vet and ask that it be issued to someone just starting out with the treatment for their pet (since diagonsis involves the vet consultation, blood test, food etc and then when you add the medication cost its a lot in one hit whereas a months worth of medication to get them started would help out with the ongoing cost).

Is this unusual? I didn't want to throw it out because some was only just issued from the vet and untouched a few days prior while the other is expensive but giving away or selling didnt seem right as they are suppose to be issued by a vet who is monitoring the dog being treated.

I gave mine to a rescue who had a dog on the same medication long term. I think the thing is though you need to be confident that it is going to be used appropriately. I'm not sure if vets do what yo are asking but it definitely wont hurt to ask and I am sure someone would appreciate your very kind gesture.

I've heard of people doing this before, giving the medication for the vet to give to a patient of their choosing (perhaps someone on a low income who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford care, etc). I'm guessing it isn't commonplace, but not unheard of. It's a lovely gesture and way to honour your late dog.

If the vet cannot do it for some reason, a rescue group may be interested — you could contact Rescue Resource or post on the rescue forum on DOL.

My local vet loves it when people return unused medications... he definitely passes them on free of charge to people needing them.

Two clinics I've worked at have a box for donated meds - the majority go to the rescue group the clinic works with but a small amount also go towards clients who could not otherwise afford to treat their pet.

I've given quite a few meds and supplements to rescue groups over the years. They are always very appreciative.

not meds, but i gave my unused Hills kd to the vet when Charlie passed away. It was given to an older lady who was trying hard to afford the food for her dog with kidney disease and was MOST appreciated, i received a beautiful heartfelt card from her (via the vet) and was so happy to be able to help out someone in my same situation.
