Rascalmyshadow
Has anyone else had serious issues with midges attacking your dogs, we’ve finally worked out after months they are the cause of 5 of our 7 dogs having red itchy bites, it’s something we’ve never dealt with before and am wondering what others have found actually works on both the dogs and ridding them from the environment, we’ve been in our house for 9 years and the last 6-12 months is the first time they’ve ever been an issue. PossumCorner
Midges, sand flies, I get a bad allergic reaction from every bite - severe pain, swelling, red rash. Only thing that works is Claratyne or I guess any anti-hist. People use it "off-label" to give their sheep a bit of relief from bitten ears - don't know if it is suitable for canines. Worth trying at first bite and headshake unless you can find some learned advice against using it for dogs: for myself, Claratyne is a very quick life-saver when a cloud of midges turns up. Midgie and mozzie central here, I put on Good Riddance which is excellent and smells nice (but a bit exxy) https://goodriddance.com.au/ they usually have a discount for first time buyers and I found that they also gave me an extra 10% off as I left the item in my cart for a couple of days so it's worth trying that. I also use the Radius repellent from Woolies but it does make you gasp for breath The dogs don't seem to be bothered by the bities so I think it may be the Bravecto that helps. You will find a cut onion rubbed over the bite takes the soreness/itchiness away. have you tried putting zinc cream or calamine lotion on the sheep ears?...worth a try
Kazm
A few years ago Molly had hives ( not sure what caused them, but it happened for a few days running). The vet suggested an antihistamine for her. Loratadine. I gave her a couple of doses and she was fine. No side effects and the hives went away. It could work for midges as well I believe. The few camping spots we’ve been to where midges and mozzies have been really bad, we leave mosquitoe coils burning. I’ve also heard that using Palmers Coconut Oil Formula Body Lotion helps to stop them biting and if you are bitten then it soothes the bite. Personally I have never tried it but a friend recommended it. She reckons it does work.
Little Gifts
Back in 1981 I lived on the beach (Holloways Beach) just outside of Cairns in a tent. Council used to come through and spray the midgies regularly. But the locals used to put some Baby Oil around their ankles and apparently the midgies don't like the smell. I assume you can still buy the product for babies and I doubt it will be harmful to dog's skin, so you could at least trial the same thing on your doggos for not much outlay? We definately used it for the 6 months we camped there and it must've worked or it would've been impossible to stay.
PossumCorner
@Rascalmyshadow and @Boronia - re the zinc cream on sheep ears, most Sheep Crazies (that's a thing) recommend Filtabac, it's has a zinc based anti bacterial anti insect component. But just reading an ad for it, noticed in small print at bottom it has a zinc warning for dogs, so not sure - out of all the suggestions maybe play safe and stay with anti-hist tablets and baby oil?? https://nwlivestock.com.au/product/ceva-filta-bac-sunfilter-anti-bacterial-cream/?attribute_size=500g+Tub&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_ads_general&utm_id=23226832042&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23222667581&gbraid=0AAAABBah8o4DK3ZAwTEbURuA83YXbFuco&gclid=Cj0KCQjwve7NBhC-ARIsALZy9HURoXQCZRZ9NJq-Xn4244ZRf-F656AktNGHuoBQHo_HHN_EJJyygJYaAomnEALw_wcB Edited March 20 by PossumCorner
Deeds
I used to use Repel X for flies etc. It's made by Troy. Most pet stores sell it. They use it on horses and livestock as well. It repels biting insects, fleas and mozzies.
