Pointers Rule Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Alrighty, my two English Pointers are scratching like crazy. Frazer (male) to the point of losy hair down his sides. They have both been treated with Revolution. They are getting Aloe Vera tablets and have been washed with Malaseb. Casey hasn't lost patches of coat, but it has thinned and her skin is a bit red, as is Frazer's. I bathed them today and Frazer had lots of loose scaby flakes that came off when bathed. I am relatively sure that it isn't food related as it is happening to them both, plus the GSPx is scratching, but not as much. At first I thought it may have been insects, but have been spraying them with aerogaurd and it hasn't made a difference. The grass is about ankle length, however when it first flared up it had just been mowed a couple of days before. I can't see anything different growing in the yard. My mother just informed me that paspalum grass is causing a lot of problems for dogs at the moment, according to a vet she heard on the radio. The problem is it only affects them AFTER it is cut, leave it alone and it doesn't cause a problem. t-time Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 What about just giving the dogs some relief with Calamine or something for a couple of days? Whether it's insect related or grass related (I don't reckon it's food either unless you've given them something different) they've gotta be itchy and flared up. Just something soothing for a few days.... The grass is causing problems around here too but I thought it's only when it gets long - oops! - I just cut my lawn as well!! Have you bathed them since all the itching started? Treat them now, take a deep breath and try again in a little while once the dogs feel a little better. Staff'n'Toller Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 If it is flaky then it sounds like the skin is in need of moisturising- but it usually works better if you are feeding them omega 3's rather than using a coat conditioner. What are you feeding? Do you have them on flea treatment? Maybe stop the aerogard and see what happens...Advantix has been very successful for fly and mossie repelling down here in Melbourne at the moment. Mel. I dont believe you are using too much product, you have flea prevention on the dogs as most people do, and wash them in shampoo like most - that's it. Try here Trina. Pointers Rule Posted January 15, 2006 Author Share Posted January 15, 2006 Dru, today was the first time I have used the malaseb, last weekend I just used the straight Aloveen, but yes, I did leave it on for the 10 minutes. I also sprayed some pinetarsol on as I was washing to try to sooth the skin. Other than these and a daily spray of aerogaurd, I have used no other product. Have given up on the aerogaurd as we are out there every evening swimming and eating dinner and have had nothing on us, so don't think it is insects. They are fed on chicken, veges and a cup of Bonnie Complete. Good idea on the calamine lotion though, will try that... anything to sooth it. Omega 3's, what sort of things is that found in. Whoever asked if I have them on flea treatment... yes, Revolution, does flea, heartworm, ticks and some sort of mange! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
fifi Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 two of my wolfie boys and our male pharoah hound, were so bad this month, despite everthing I tried, we ended up at the vets for depredil injections to break the itch cycle. I think its a combination here of the heat, paspalam, kikiyu grass....and who know's what The injections allowed us to get on top of the itch, and along with malaseb, we are hanging in there! we've never had the itchies as bad as last year and this year's summers. strangely though, its only the boys here fifi Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What sort of quantity of oil should I give them... Frazer is set in his ways and won't usually eat anything different so I think it would be a waste of time trying sardines etc..... fifi Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Right now, I'm using it in the hydrobath, for the boys, every two - three weeks. I bathed them today, and all is STILL and QUIET, not the sounds of bang, bang,bang on the back verandah.....as they scratch themselves silly !!! We feed a semi-barf style diet, they get sardines once or more per week ect, we have only had this extreme problem for two summers - and of course we have northern hemisphere dogs! bog-Irish anyway! I have to admit that my skin is the same with the heat, excema, dermatitis and psorasis have all flared up (probably stress, but the heat knocks me around) fifi Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I am a bit concerned about using the betadine as one is pretty much white all over and the other has a brown patch over his back, but other then that is white also! I was thinking twice weekly with the Malaseb. But was reading about the Martha Gardeners earlier today and wondering about giving that a try, but don't know if I am game enough! KOE Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Dont use the bedatine because it will stain especially if you show, I actually bought Woolworths homebrand woolwash and put 2 caps in the hydrobath for 3 GSD's and honestly no scratching. I usually wash these 3 in fido free itch but because they are itchy within a day I read somewhere about wool wash and thought might as well try it, but someone posted in the other thread that it is no good for the coats. Rappie Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 I usually use Malaseb once daily for three days, then every 3 days (which is essentially twice a week ). Once things have settled down, then drop the frequency to weekly whileever you're still having trouble. If you re using Malaseb then you shouldn't really have any reason to need to use Betadine as well. Chlorhexidine has a residual action that is extended with repeated use, so Malaseb, along with some kind of humectant / leave in conditioner should be all that is needed. I know plenty of people swear by wool mix, but I'd prefer to use something like Aloveen conditioner. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Homer's mummy Posted January 15, 2006 Share Posted January 15, 2006 My dog has allergy problems too and his specialist has asked me to shampoo him no more than once a week as excessive shampoo can apparently further dry already dry skin by washing away natural oils. Your products sound good. I know Malaseb although Homer uses (with some help from me LOL) Pyohex first only on affected areas (mainly belly, chest and legs) and then Episoothe shampoo all over followed by conditioner. the dermatologist did mention that the Pyohex/malaseb type shampoos are pretty strong and can aggrevate the itchiness if used too much or too often. The calamine will definitely help and you could also try rubbing ice cubes on the itchy areas to calm it down and provide relief from the heat. Hope it gets better.
