m575 Posted September 17, 2006 Share Posted September 17, 2006 Ok, firstly is dynamic lifter safe for dogs? As in, will it affect them in anyway? Because my pups sometimes eat it out of the garden. We will try and get rid of it but yeah... and when will they learn bark properly? Because the dogs were outside, and they went around to the side were there is another dog there, 10 times bigger than both of them put together. I have no idea what happend but one dog came SCREAMING (NOT BARKING!) around the house and to my door so i went outside to investigate nad i couldnt find my other dog. I then put fudge back on the ground and she lead me to caramel which was the lost pup who was just sitting there on 3 paws :s....then the neighbour came outside to see what had just happend as he thoaught that it was a child making all the noise! i honestly thaught that it was a cat runnign away from my dogs....lol...but yeah, he said that his dog wouldnt bite another and it is one of the friendlyiest and stupidist dogs ive ever seen. Im sure it was just a startle but when will they learn to bark properly? lol. just so i can distinguish between cat, child and dog. Also, is it true that older dogs dont tend to pick on puppies or anything because, well just like we adults wouldnt go and picka fight with a baby? is this true or a bunch of horse shit? and these dogs have met other dogs before...sorry for the long post they are 2 JRT's....9 weeks me thinks... Bailey got his true bark around 12 weeks if thats any help Edited to add: Its horse manure you only have to look at Indy (poor Kazzkanary's puppy) who was I think around 15 weeks old who died today after being attacked by a larger dog at a dog park! A well socialised and freindly dog would not normally attack puppies, unless they had a high prey drive and mistook them for a small rodent or something. Now assuming your puppy was in one piece by the time you found it, and that the neighbours dog had ample opportunity in that time to harm it if so wished, it would appear that the bigger dog is not particularly out to hurt your puppies, but probably just curious to look at them. Always best to not leave them unattended with dogs that you don't know. An unsocialised dog could attack a puppy, since they would not have any understanding of what it was or how puppies are treated in normal dog society (pack life). Ah, I see you have now heard the JRT scream, they can be very brave up unto a point but if something startles them they will scream like that. As for barking, be careful what you wish for. What were your puppies doing outside of their fence? I thought you kept them behind your fence. Also the neighbours dog should not be on your property but somewhere behind it's own fence. Sometime, if your neighbour is willing, and when your pups are fully immunised, you could arrange with them to go for a little walk with them and their dog and your dogs, so they could get to know each other better. I think I'd probably be careful of it as well. Fresh poo (of any variety) is one thing but DL has generally been bagged (if purchased) or carefully composted and encouraged to get hot and wet if created at home. t-time Posted September 18, 2006 Share Posted September 18, 2006 Firstly, I ended up with one very sick little dog - into the vet with vomiting and diahorrea after eating some organic dynamic lifter. It is full of bacteria which is great for your garden but not so great for doggy tummies Secondly, although adult dogs will not necessarily "pick on" little puppies, they will put them in their place if they are being particularly annoying ;) Sometimes putting puppies in their place can be quite aggressive and the pup will display all the submissive traits that it should when respecting its elders ;) It is about your pups learning manners from the older dog which is very beneficial but I would also still be wary as puppies can get damaged easily and the force applied to a JRT from to JRT compared to let's say, a GSD to a JRT can be quite different. Sometimes a bigger dog will not realise that the other dog is a smaller breed and might not be able to stand up to wallop they have given them! He didn't get sick but the frequency and amount of defeacation was unbelievable! This time I decided to do it differently. I have soaked the DL pellets in water for a week to make a concentrate then mixed a small amount of that in a bucket of water and 'watered' the garden with it. I know of people you have done this with the train of thought that a grown dog won't hurt a pup. It does happen and with dire consequences. Most dogs will be fine but you just never know. I agree, caution is very wise with puppies, and keep an eye on her just to be on the safe side. JRT's are very expressive dogs, as you will discover, they will naturally point like a pointer, put a paw up in an expression of surprise or in submission, (paw up then roll on back), and their ears and eyes and eyebrows are amazingly expressive. Since the big boof neither chased the screaming JRT and the other JRT was still sitting there in a submissive posture but quiet, when you found her, I doubt anything happened. Did she appear to be ok over since yesterday. JRTs are bold and adventurous, it's very important to keep them safe and enclosed in a fenced area. They could just run off after something and that will be the last you will see of them. (They can easily get lost, stolen or injured at any age.) noisymina Posted September 19, 2006 Share Posted September 19, 2006 Dynamic lifter tends to lose its attraction once wet - we either wet it straight away - doesn't take much for it to get soft and thus much harder for the dogs to eat - or throw it around just before rain. Sorry that i didnt make myself clear but there is NO way i would leave my dogs knowing that they would be with another dog that i dont know. They were seperated by a fence, and this is why i dont know what happend. Beats me :s but they are absolutley fine now although they were shaking for a bit after it happend...what ever happend. Also, these pups seem to have made themselves at home and know who feeds them. They usualy wont try to make a run for it when the front door opens and before we took them for a walk and gave them both some time off leash...i was ready to catch them because luckily i can still run faster than them, but they just followed us around...thanks for the help! and also, i also dont think DL is a very good part of there diet...lol...i dont liek the idea of it and thats why i asked about it but will deffinetly get rid of it. Please bear in mind though, that one days your JRT's are likely to bolt, especially if there are 2 of them to egg each other on. They are extremely fast on the fly and have a high prey drive and although extremely loyal they were also bred to work (hunt) independantly. Glad they are ok.
