I Year Ago I Got The Phone Call
Loving my Oldies replied to casowner's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, I am follower too and then I can walk away from the computer with a big smile on my face and dreams of visiting SA one day   -
If the only treats available when you are shopping are made overseas, why give them at all? A few years ago, Urban Animal magazine had an article on treats and the bit I particularly recall was about rawhide chews. The amount and types of chemicals used to produce those was horrifying. The dogs I had at the time loved them, but after I read that article, they sure as hell didn't get them again. Walking through the pet food aisles at my local supermarket and seeing all the crap that is on sale is enough to give me heart failure, god knows what those products are doing to our animals. They are also putting the small producers out of business. I was so happy over the years to be able to source fresh meat and dried products produced here in Sydney. But guess what's happened to them? Yep, had to fold as just could not compete with the big supermarkets which import huge quantities of highly questionable and downright dangerous products from overseas.

I'm Becoming Afraid To Walk My Dogs
Loving my Oldies replied to *kirty*'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Only a little bit of your post quoted, Mita, because the rose coloured glasses bit is spot on and the other? Well I'm glad you said "generally" because there were huge problems in society that were hidden and not discussed. Definitely better times for dogs though. -
No way would I feed my dogs treats or chews or jerky or anything like that made in China. FFS: so many factories don't give a ratz about what they give to human beings. You think they are going to care about animals?

I'm Becoming Afraid To Walk My Dogs

Agree with this. Most dogs that have lunged at me have been on lead. I'd rather come across an in control dog off lead than an on lead out of control dog. They are probably just desperate to be a dog and say hello and constantly being pulled back makes them think there is something very wrong going on and they need to do something about it. Because of the way we live, people think a dog on a lead is a natural thing. It isn't, so the dogs pay for it in terms of lack of training and, hence, understanding. How many times has anyone here heard, "My dog is hopeless on a lead."? People again. We can't blame the dogs all the time. And then, of course, there are those who have been very evident in this thread who think laws don't apply to them because they and their dogs are perfect -
Well she is striding out to face it head on

How smart was that Koala, though? Didn't keep climbing the second time, but jumped onto land asap and made off to another tree. Amazing.

Hmm, she was carrying more than a few - LOL. Gorgeous girl.

Man Punches Police Dog, Gets Bitten On Penis...
Loving my Oldies replied to Alyosha's topic in In The News
Why don't you go in and show them how? You obviously have ALL the answers. How many dogs are out there on the job day in and day out and how many get injured? Policement get injured and killed as well. As horrific and desperately sad as it is, it comes with the territory of trying to control a horrible part of our society and trying to keep the majority of us as safe as possible. -

Don't be put off by back leg issues. Most creatures (including humans :D ) will have leg issues by the time they are this little girl's age or the equivalent. -

And IF they act, it will be to prohibit dogs from MORE areas. Which is why I added "media coverage". Media coverage = pollies promising more legislation. -

That is true (and pretty much what I was saying) and people need to be aware Being on high alert is very different (or should be) from panic stations. I'm always on high alert as I generally walk 5 small dogs, one of whom is highly reactive and I am always looking out for other dog walkers because I don't want her going off her nut at calm and well behaved dogs. There have also been a few people who have moved into the neighbourhood who seem to have large and highly excitable dogs and obviously don't know how to handle them , so I never know when they are likely to be out at the same time I am. If I see them and can divert, I do. -

So many of these posts are really really despressing - and horrifying. Without going back to do a search, I don't know if it is in this thread wherein I wrote about being charged by a dog who was illegally in a small children's fenced playground. He was in charge of a young boy who was being dragged along the ground, grinning wildly while hanging onto the dog's collar (no lead). I had 5 little dogs so I was madly checking that all the gates to the playground were closed. I wrote to the Council and also included a couple of other stories. Response to the playground episode? If I can provide a name and address, they will go around and talk to the people. Response to other stories/complaints/suggestions? Yes we know. Yes we are always patrolling and no we don't send rangers out for roaming dogs. I have been walking these streets for over 8 years at no set times, and generally twice a day. You'd think the odds would be that I would have seen a ranger's vehicle a couple of times, but have never seen one. I suggested better signage on the playground. Response: That's not my department but I will forward your letter and then it is up to them. What it boils down to folks is that we are on our own and we'd better get used to it and deal with it the best way we can. We can rant and rave (as I have done interminably over the years), but it gets us nowhere. Life is a gamble, bad things happen, they are going to continue to happen. Life is dangerous and we need to do the best we can to keep ourselves and our dogs safe. Depressing? You bet. But there are people out there who don't give a rat's arse for anyone and nothing will change them. And pollies will act only if their are votes or media coverage in it. -

Mita Where Are You?

This has been coming up in a few threads, now. You are so right RP. We have enough legislation, but what is the point if it isn't going to be followed through. It is just so frustrating. -

My....how Different We Look Without Our Long Hair
Loving my Oldies replied to Marion 01's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Waiting at the vets a couple of years ago, a dog came out of the consulting room who looked like (memory is failing me) a Staffy x JR. Turns out he was a pure Westie who had been shaved to try to find ticks. Your black satins are very beautiful, Marion 01. -
Anyone Associated With Rescue At Renbury?
Loving my Oldies replied to mita's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
True, but you'd think they could make a stab at suggesting the dog may have XYZ breed looks. Yes, I've only ever heard exceptionally good things about the staff at Renbury. Renbury has worked very closely with rescue groups for years -
