  1. how should I go about correcting him? thanks for all the help guys
  2. I have a few questions about my dog pulling on the lead during walks. I have a very excitable dog who gets very stimulated by sights and smells on walks. He does pull a lot especially in the first 15 mins or so on a walk, so I use a harness so there is less pressure on his neck. When he pulls I stop walking and make him sit and watch or I stop and make him heel and watch and then we take off again. Is this the right thing to do? An obdedience instruction told me I could also give the lead a pull to get him back in the right place (like a correction) when he starts to get out in front but im not sure if this is the right thing to do with such a little dog. The dog likes to be out in front say half a foot in front of me even if he is not pulling, so I'd like to him to walk closer to my leg more often. He does know the heel command but he is not good at walking to heel if you know what I mean. Also when we get close to the park the pulling intensifies so it can often take us 5 or 10 mins to walk the last 50 metres to the park. Should I be really consistent in not letting him pull at all? Because sometimes I just keep going so we can get to the park and it can be over. I would also like to know about how I can get my dog to remain calm when there are other dogs out walking. I know some people stop and make their dogs sit while other dogs pass and get their dog to look at them. How should I go about this? any help much appreciated
  3. so there is a fair bit of bone in the lamb flap?
  4. Im not really good with anantomy so can someone tell me what part of the animal do lamb flaps and brisket bones come from? also wondering are ribs bones hard to get or should most butchers have them?
  5. You know when you see those people that just have to take their puppies out in public when they are 6-8 weeks old to show them off? I thought you needed to wait until 2 weeks after their last vaccinations in order to safely do this. Say at around 14 weeks? So what I want to know is when I see very young puppies out in public is there any risk to my dog in meeting them or is it more risky to the puppy itself in that it could pick up a disease from older dogs? any info would be much appreciated
  6. it turns out the vet was treating my dog like a puppy. when I got the c5 done at 6 months they only gave him one shot, they didnt tell me he needed to come back for another one 2 weeks later. I only got this done anyway because I needed for obedience training. Now that ive got the first C5 do I need to go back for the kennel cough booster? im just confused by it all..
  7. oh thanks guys I shall ask the vet what is the reasoning behind the need for the next shot and I wont get it if there is no reason for it.
  8. I think the vet put the stickers with C5 verbac on there. I will check it out but I know mum took the dogs previous vaccination card from the breeder with her so I dont think the vet would have treated him as a dog that has never been vaccinated before
  9. mum had to take my dog to the vet the other day for a C5 as we are going away for a weekend soon and the dog has to stay in kennels. The dog is 1 and a half but this is the first booster he has had since puppyhood. After the C5 injection was given the vet said the dog needs to come back in a couple of weeks for another injection which is a booster of the kennel cough component (she said something like that). I want to know why he needs another vaccination and is this really necessary. He had a vaccination for kennel cough when he was 6 months and it was only one injection, so im wondering why we need 2 injections with this one?
  10. how much is ok for a dog? some of the bones i get from the butcher are pretty fatty. A little bit of fat is ok right? but how much is too much?
  11. thanks for that cavandra. i read in another thread that dogs are omnivores not carnivores can someone clarify this! cheers
  12. exactly how important are carbs in a dogs diet? roughly what % of carbs does a dog need? I didnt think carbs were that important, but my aunty is always raving on about how her dog loves rice and how dogs need carbs. cheers mr Carter
  13. If I find a tick on my dog whats the best thing to do? Say its not too serious how would I go about removing it?
  14. thanks for that guys. Its a box clicker kavik. I may try clicking the top of a pen im sure he could handle that
  15. I was trying out clicker trainer last night and my dog monte seems to be scared of the noise the clicker makes. The clicker is quite loud and he doesnt like loud noises at all. How can I get him to overcome this?
  16. im after a good agility book for a beginner. Can anyone suggest a good one for me? I would prefer a book written by an Australian for Australian readers!
  17. wow that seems cheap. You can only use their equipment when the classes are on right? yes i've got a papillon. we have done puppy class and 2 obedience classes now im looking for something a bit more fun and challenging. I think it may take me a lot of training over summer to get him to a level where he can do the foundation agility class. The BC's are so good at it, so it seems a bit daunting.
  18. im not too sure but I use the pad as a guide and cut about 3 or 4mm above the level of the pad.
  19. thanks amypie. I was wondering how much it costs also. I know its $60 annual fee but what about the course fees? Would love to meet your tentie one day
  20. He is 15 months amypie. Ive done basic obedience with him. im not moving over there until the start of january. Its a good club right? Do you reckon I will need to buy any equipment or will I be able to get enough practice at the club? I still need to work on those 3 things plus recall so it might take me a while to get up to speed. Thanks guys
  21. I was wondering can anyone recommend this club? Whats it like? Im looking at doing the foundation class next year. Im not sure about these 3 commands that your meant to be able to do before you start the class. Can anyone explain to me how you teach a dog these things? Targeting : dog can be sent to a target on the ground and either touch with nose or paw Targeting is a very easy and useful skill to teach your dog. This can be used when teaching contacts and is also useful for teaching distance work. Directional commands : dog will move away to both left and right hand sides on command An agility course may require you to have your dog on either your right or left hand side. This often means that during your run your dog will need to change from one side of you to the other. By teaching your dog directional commands we can communicate this to our dogs easily. Flat work : dog will run on handlers left and right hand sides on inside and outside leads If your dog will run on both your left and right hand sides when on the flat it should be very easy to then have your dog do the same but perform obstacles while on either side of you. cheers
  22. oh right thanks. I dont understand how people can feed a kibble only diet as well its like damn u have to feed some fresh food imagine if we only ate processed food
  23. i dont think offal is no good for dogs, plenty of vitamins in it. chicken frames are great, full of easy to digest soft bones and cartilage dont know how old ur pup is but I think a pup over 6 months should be able to handle chicken frames unminced maybe just cut up into smaller pieces like say 1/4 or 1/5 piece of frame. but minced frames would be better than nothing.
  24. I was wondering what is it about raw food that makes it better for the nutrition of dogs compared to cooked food?
