  1. sorry slightly OT but when I walk past PP and they have a puppy out of the fish tank and a prospective owner is cooing over it, I am very tempted to say something. Not something derogatory but just something like why dont you buy a dog from a registered breeder, do you really think this is a good environment to raise a puppy in? Do other people say something in these situations??
  2. valleywa, he is so adorable. what colour do you call that? What colour are his eyes?
  3. im a not a fan of CM. His books consist of him repeating the same 3 or 4 philosophies over and over again. Then its like did I mention I am a famous hollywood dog behaviourist, did I mention I trained Oprah's dog. Did I mention I am best mates with Jada-Pinkett Smith and solved all their doggy problems. Too much self-promotion for me.
  4. Hey BB, I know you are going camping but I did go down to Margaret River last year and stayed at the little house http://www.margarethouse.com.au/ and it was pretty good. Stayed in the little bungalow house (2nd pic on left). It was pretty basic but cheap (for Margaret River) and a really picturesque area. The fencing is pretty crap and they have a chook pen 50 metres away from the house which monte got into. But you can lock your dog inside the house if you want to go anywhere.
  5. OT but are you saying chows can get depressed when they have been shaved?
  6. speaking of poo ive started taking extra poo bags to the dog beach to give to people who are unprepared, you know the people who look around to see if anyone is watching after their dog has defocated, so they can leave the scene of the crime (little kiddies play in the sand ). its my public health initiative kinda like giving out condoms to randy teenagers.
  7. I thought most vets starting out earn about 40k a year and it increases pretty quickly, whereas vet nurses are only paid about $18 an hour, correct me if im wrong.
  8. what kind of serious breeder calls themselves King of Blue . And if they are only breeding for one colour, the one with the most health issues, then I would give them a wide berth
  9. it was a white dog but more the size of a miniature poodle. Havent met many oodles with good temperaments .
  10. Hey Eaglereach what breed are you getting? How exciting for you. IMO dog park interaction should be closely monitored. There is always going to be fights if everyone just goes to a dog park and lets their dogs do whatever they want. It is nice to socialise with other like minded people but I think a lot of the time their is too much socialising and not enough vigilance in regards to making sure your dog is not starting a fight, or excreting or pestering other people.
  11. Whilst on this topic I have been having trouble lately with dogs taking our ball and running off with it. They love to try and avoid their owners who are trying to get the ball back for me. Half the time these people get pissed off at me for forcing them try and get the ball back. The other day an oodle stole my ball. He is running around trying to avoid his owners who are yelling at him trying to get him to drop it. I was wondering why they didnt just take the ball off him. Anyway oodle rans up to me and I grab him with my left hand and grab the ball with my right hand. If anything I was expecting him to go for the hand that took the ball away from him but no he bit me on the left hand. Not hard enough to draw blood though. I know not the brightest thing to do but I just wanted my ball back. I would have probably used distraction with something else to get him to drop the ball if I had something with me. The owner saw me get bitten but just ignored it. Unfortunately a few minutes later my dog puts the ball down to get a drink and oodle is of with the ball again. This time his owners demand that I yell at him in a really stern voice. Im thinking this is ridiculous but give it a go and it doesnt work. So I just grabbed the ball from him again with my right hand and the dog air snapped at my left hand. i was too quick for oodle this time. I would of thought resource guarders would go for the hand that is taking something away from them??
  12. Why bother ? Maybe if she had a word to the woman spreading the accusations it might make the woman re-assess her attitute towards big brown entire dogs. she might be able to be educated a little
  13. Lurcher.. usually Whippet/BC mixes. Yep, pretty much confined to the UK. Huntaway. NZ Herding breed. Bergamasco.. that's a corded breed I think. So Lurchers are just mutts? Are the other 2 recognised breeds in their countries?
  14. but how many beagles dont have colour over both of their eyes? isnt that what gets them?
  15. sorry to go slightly off topic but 3 dogs I wouldnt know the breed of if they were standing in front of me are the Lurcher (isnt this a dog from the UK that is rare is Australia?), Huntaway (hunting dog ) and Bergamasco Sheepdog
  16. Thanks for the replies. I have Jan Fennell's book, I think its a good book, might lend it to her
  17. Sorry I took so long to get back to this. The trainer said the same sort of thing as I did, screaming as if your hurt when the puppy mouths and ignoring it etc. My friend says she is sick of the dog mouthing and jumping up on people. It isn't actually her dog exactly, its really her step-son's dog but my friend has to live with it, step-son hasn't put enough work into the puppy so its a whole family problem. Part of the problem I think is a lack of consistency from everyone in the house. Do you guys think this a case where it should just be tough love and consistent leadership or do they need to start to think about getting a behaviourist in? With the jumping up I would turn my body and put my hip into the dogs chest if it were my dog and then ignore it. I havent spent much time with this dog but when she mouthed me I grabbed the scruff of her neck pretty hard and said 'bah' in a deep voice. This didn't deter the dog at all, it was like she thought I was just playing with her.
  18. one of my friends has an airedale pup. She is 9 months old, beautiful dog. She is still very mouthy and mouths quite hard. To teach bite inhibition would squelling and carrying on like you were really hurt be the best way to go? I think my friend wants to nip this in the bud because the dog is 9 months old now. She also jumps on me and other guests. I just turned my back to her and said bah and she eventually left me alone. I think part of the problem is lack of consistency and not enough stimulation. They have got a trainer to visit and are trying to do the right thing. Im wondering if anyone had anymore tips
  19. He could do some of the courses that Steve Courtney runs at K9 Force. You do them by distance education. There are also seminars he could go to. He is also on DOL as K9force I think thats him. Perhaps pm him. good luck
  20. I cant really see how big they are, I can only see one embedded black mark with redness around it. But there is another small sore where it appears he has scratched something completely out and it has broken the skin slightly
  21. I think I just have one tick. I had a go with the tweezers and one of the spots appears to be just a freckle or something. The other spot I tried to touch with the tweezers but the dog reacted like it was painful. Im not sure i could get it out anyway because it is flat (if you know what I mean) nothing to pull out really and the dog is only going to get worked up.
  22. My dog has been scratching a lot in the past few days all over his body really. Big tufts of hair have been coming out. Today I have found two black marks in his skin on his abdomen. The skin on his belly is pretty red raw. One of them is more deeply embedded in the skin than the other. If they are ticks I think he has scratched the heads off them. Im off to the vet in a couple of hours. Im in perth which I dont think is a paralysis tick area. His behaviour has been pretty normal apart from the scratching and the tufts of hair coming out. Can ticks cause itchyness all over, i.e not just in the area where they have attached themselves? If they are ticks how will the vet get the remaining bits out? Will the vet prescribe any meds? How serious can it get? Like can they cause an infection around the skin? I found a tick in the backyard last week, I checked him all over and couldnt find any parasites on him. But I did give him a dose of advocate and a flea/tick shampoo.
  23. well a lady in perth sells them :D http://www.kietrashowandpetsupplies.com/default.asp
  24. Can anyone recommend these brushes? How good are they?
