  1. You may have heard of it but 'before and after getting your puppy' by Dr. Ian Dunbar is a good read. Also Jean Donaldson - The Culture Clash is very informative
  2. ha ha. Or 'chuck' after Chuck Norris. Or 'Carter' after me and Jimmy
  3. Oh America the land of the free They sound a bit like surnames to me. How about naming him after a famous American? How about Johnnie after Johnnie Cochrane Louis after Louis Armstrong Jesse after Jesse Jackson Prince (the singer) Ali (after Muhammad)
  4. im after a new pin/bristle brush. Im after a little bit better quality one than you would normally find at a pet shop. Can anyone recommend any brands that are good and/or online shops that sell them? Also wondering what brands of slickers others use and where do you buy them. cheers Nick
  5. Inciting even more of this small dog owners are idiots angst is hardly productive. Its not the size of the dog that matters, they are all dogs after all. This topic was done and dusted by the first page.
  6. my dog got into a bag with heartworm tablets in it yesterday. Im not sure how much exactly he has eaten i think there was only 4 tablets in there (which is 4 monthly doses), 6 at the most. Anyway i didnt realise for 24 hours and he seems fine today. Just wondering if anyone knows how much would be a lethal dose?
  7. im sure this is a myth. Just like neutering a male dog makes him lazy
  8. I've been in a few potentially nasty situations with other dogs. For instance I was walking on a footpath once down at south beach, my dog on left side. I saw this malamute tied up in the grassy area about 3 metres off the footpath on the right. When I went past the mal it lunged towards us so hard I thought the lead was going to snap. Now had the lead snapped I dont know what I would have done, I thought the mal wanted to get at my dog and I wouldnt have been able to get any help for say 15 seconds as I was by myself and the owner of the other dog was a fair way away. Ive had aggression dogs come up to us on the beach before and yelling at them in a deep voice is normally enough to deter them. Then I was reading on here about how warley (sorry warley just using you as an example) often has to kick stray dogs in the street when she is out walking her dogs. So I thought when is it ok to kick a dog who comes up to you off lead and there is a decent chance it is going to be aggressive towards your dog? Can a kick be a good deterant in a potentially dangerous situation? Im not someone who has ever had to kick a dog just wondering what peoples views are on this.
  9. me and my favourite ridgeback bitch salty
  10. my nephew and his fav dog monte.
  11. I don't know a great deal about the BARF diets but i know it works for my dog, its better than cooked food and it seems more natural than feeding processed foods all the time. I was wondering if there is any scientific evidence to back it up, that BARF and feeding predominately raw food can be better for a dogs health than processed dog foods. The reason I ask is because I was reading dogs life and the vet on there (who often gives bad advice or actually doesnt answer peoples question at all) was bagging out the BARF diet and saying how it was just a fad which i thought was overreacting.
  12. The toy is normally a squeky bone but a tug toy or ball works.
  13. yes but sometimes when he is tired he will have a rest wherever the toy lands or he can sometimes be distracted by other people/dogs. So this is when I have a lot less control obviously so I take 2 toys, one to entice him if he is looking distracted but I don't wanna rely on toys too much
  14. thanks for that. Say I have a tug toy. My dog is running round sniffing the grass or whatever, then I show him the toy and call him to 'come'. He comes and I say good 'come', and then I play tug with him for a minute or so. I repeat this over and over but decrease the rate of reward until I don't need the toy because the behaviour will be patterned. Is that right? What happens when I take the toy away after the reward? I know the dog will just bark and be like 'lets play lets play give me my toy'. eta - Ive tried working with a long-lead and food rewards but its been pretty slow going, dog distracted and not really motivated by food. Having said that I don't think i've persisted enough with that. Should I do a combination of the two methods?
  15. I still have a dog with a bad recall. Im going to get stuck into training over summer. His food drive is quite low. However he will come probably 90% of the time if I have a toy. How can I use use his toy obsession to my advantage? Having said that I don't want to always have to rely on having a toy handy to make him come. its like cheating.
  16. well with chicken necks i thought there was no bone in them just cartilage. So i think chicken frames are better because they have a lot of soft bones and cartilage in there
  17. just wondering is the main problem with a balanced diet that people give too much muscle meat in comparison to bone?
  18. just wondering if someone can give me some info on feeding a balanced diet. With raw meaty bones you have to get the phosphorous/calcium balance right. is that correct? So im guessing too much muscle meat means too much phosphorous and vice versa? At the moment i feed say 45% RMB 45% eagle pack and 10% other (fish, veges, egg, yoghurt etc). How do i know if im getting the balance right? what other things need to be balanced? cheers
  19. I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with. Say you have a small dog and you give it a marrow bone. The dog gnaws away at the head of the bone and makes little impression on it. Is this bad for the dogs teeth? Does it make the teeth wear?
  20. oh ok but what it the point when you could use a longer lead and shorten it as neccessary by holding excess lead in your right hand. The dogs I see on retractable leads seem to walk 5 metre in front of their owner and pull like hell.
  21. Ive seen a lot of these retractable leads lately. I was wondering how they work and if they are of much benefit. Dont these leads simply teach a dog that if it pulls it gets rewarded by getting to go where it wants?
