Karen Pryor Academy In Australia
huski replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Don't be silly! Positive methods don't work, you need to use a big almighty leash correction to train some consequences. I think I should make a suggestion to Steve for the QLD workshop that's coming up in a couple of months, he can do an agility demonstration for us :D LOL. Sorry, I shouldn't keep taking the thread OT. -

Hey why not?!!! Have you not ever seen him scaling an A-Frame on full height? lol Hehehe.... funny visual Erny... :D :D -
LOL that kind of attitude cracks me up. Right up there with the people who think dog sports are cruel and horrible and competition is bad for dogs.

I love public speaking! LOL I've done a lot of it from a young age but even now still get a bit nervous, I am fine once I get started though and don't freak out nearly as much as I do when it comes to trialling

A good trainer may be able to get a pretty good feel on what kind of aggression a dog may have over the internet, but not one reputable trainer would ever diagnose aggression over the internet. Even people like K9 Pro, Erny, Nekhbet, Cosmolo etc who are all very knowledgable and experienced trainers/behaviourists won't do it. What makes you think you know better than they do?
-
Yawn, 55Chevy et al, don't you ever get bored pedaling the same argument in every single thread?

Dju, his behaviour is not remotely normal or desirable. I think the best thing you could do is have a good one on one session with a reputable trainer who can help you with the behavioral side of things. His behaviour is very serious, it's something you need a professional to help you with. Even if it was "friendly" barking a lot of dogs won't see it that way and it could lead to issues. I don't let my dogs greet others if they are too aroused. Remember when you first started seeing issues with his behaviour towards other dogs when you bought him home? And a number of us told you it was a serious and would get worse if you didnt handle it right way then and there? Well It's gotten worse, trust us when we say it's not normal and stress how serious it is.

So I attempted to do some Christmas pics with Daisy today, I had a concept and everything. But seeing as I am not a photographer, it was mostly just a big fail But the pics were still amusing, so I thought I'd post them here What more could a beagle want for Christmas... than a donut tree? Wear tinsel for noms? sure thing!
-
Nawww you're too sweet :) I couldn't get a big head living with Daisy, she lives to embarrass and challenge me, lol.
-
Dju - you care, and you are committed to trying, a bad dog owner wouldn't do either of those things
-
As a comparison on what to do (Zero) and what not to do (Daisy) I'm sure
-
Meh we're total frauds... She's still evil
-
Totally agree. Some people may give me advice and I would never dream of taking anything they said seriously on board - ever, but then the people who I really respect are the people I WANT advice from and whose advice I value really highly.
-
You guys are my favourite success story
-
Thanks Esky! LOL WA, have changed the thread title to save confusion

Dju I get what you are saying and if you are getting a lot of value out of the puppy school otherwise then stick with it It is a dog trainer's job to be honest with their clients and not sugar coat things. But - they should never make you feel like a bad dog owner, talk down to you, criticise you constantly, make you feel like a failure etc. My trainer is always honest with me but has NEVER made me feel discouraged or bad about my training. Making your clients feel like failures is what causes people give up training their dog. A good trainer WANTS their clients to succeed.
