I'm sure they are probably fine, but I just couldn't trust snap collars again. -

I never ever EVER use collars that have those clips instead of buckles - I've had them break on me multiple times. -

I couldn't use anything after having good quality leather leashes for the last five or so years. They are just so nice to use and last forever. -
I don't know how I'd deal with one of those super-people obsessed dogs. I have a personal space bubble, and even though I enjoy having cuddles with my dogs I don't want them all over me all the time. Sometimes I think it would be nice, and then other times I appreciate having a dog who doesn't fall all over itself to get attention from people.

Huskies Maul Dog Owner's Jack Russell To Death In Savage Attack

Exactly. Though people with Danielle's mentality would be happy to any dog that shows the slightest natural instinct be PTS immediately, rather than educate people to create more awareness and understanding of the animals we have in our backyards. Euthanasia is not a solution to this problem. These kinds of attacks will keep happening until we take a different approach and put our energies into educating people rather than burying our heads in the sand. -
From someone who owns Spitz breeds and hounds just about any dog looks like a velcro dog in comparison
-
I love a challenge. I don't like needy velcro dogs, I like my dogs to be a bit independent but also social and confident. I like busy dogs, who are active and drivey. I like dogs that are intelligent and don't just do something because you tell them to but will stop and say "why?" I'd be beyond bored with a dog that I couldn't do lots of things with.

These dogs were Mals, not huskies. Not that breed is particularly relevant. There are no hard and fast rules regarding what a dog can and can't see as a prey item. To a large prey driven dog, what is the difference between a small 5kg fluffy dog and a possum or a large chook? -
Great clip Ptolomy!

Sorry, I'm not up on the terminology I just do a 'normal' turn like on the phone book. The elephant trick is my girl's favourite game ever. It's the one where you switch the lead around your back that confuses me Ah gotcha now! I used to do that around the back turn but I would never train it or use it again now. I like that my dog stays with me and if you train it well, IMO it looks better than the around the back turn too.
-
I always do the pivot left about turn. I used to do the round the back one but I much prefer the pivot one since I trained it. It was easier to train then I thought - I started by training the 'elephant trick' where you get the dog to stand with its front paws on a phone book or similar and use its back legs to walk around it. There are heaps of good videos on youtube that demonstrate how to do it, TerraNik has some good ones too.

LOL good idea Ness! Anything to pass the time, we got sent home from work just before the CBD was evacuated so we've been couped up in the house since then.
-
Same. I can't even use the garage as we've had to put the big car in there ;)

Glad you are safe Beth. Hope you get some relief from the floods soon.
-
We're all safe and sound - our suburb has flood warnings but we'll be safe in our street. Hope everyone else is ok xx

Siberians are well known for their high prey drive so I am struggling to see your point Many people do not recommend rehoming adult Sibes to houses with cats, many breeders and rescue groups won't do it because in most instances, unless the dog is raised with cats from a young age, it is likely that it will see them as a prey item. I know quite a few Siberians who are cat killers, there is no way I would trust an adult Siberian with my cat, if I didn't know for a fact it was raised with them and didn't see them as a prey item. My dog has killed possums that are similar sizes to cats, why do you think he sees a difference between a possum in the yard and my cat in the yard if it isn't because he has grown up with the cat, and has been trained and socialised to not see cats as prey items? -

I'm not sure what you are getting at here Nev. This isn't a competition about who has the dog with the highest prey drive. I have never implied that my dog has the same level of prey drive as a working line GSD or Mal. What do you class as a dog that has "real prey drive"? Are you saying that dog that has killed multiple small animals doesn't have real prey drive? My point was simply that you can have a dog who has prey drive (and has proven it has prey drive by killing small animals) who can live with small animals without seeing them as prey or having them trigger the dog into prey drive. -
That's one plus to having a dog who is not really interested in pats. Teaching Daisy the SFE wasn't too difficult (now I've said that, watch our SFE turn to shit )

Sorry Cos, didn't mean to sound like I was disagreeing with you - I agree totally that it is very reliant on how the dog has been raised, socialised and trained. -

I have a pet store puppy who has had problems since the day we bought her home - not serious issues like some people, but she's had serious allergies, two luxating patellas, a disaligned jaw etc. She's 12 years old now and we love her dearly so it's not a terrible story. I know people who have bought pups from pet stores and then had the pup die, had to be PTS due to health problems etc. But like others the issue for me is not just the fact that you are playing lottery when you buy a puppy from a pet store in terms of health, temperament etc. But that you are buying a puppy who, in all likelihood, has come from a puppy farm and then been raised in an environment that is detrimental to their development. -

This, exactly. I am lucky because of the way my dog has been raised he doesn't see cats as prey items - we've had no problem introducing two kittens to our household, and he's lived in harmony with cats his whole life. He also lives with a 5kg chihuahua cross and definitely doesn't see her as a prey item. But he's killed numerous bats, possums, rats and mice that have entered our yard over the years. This is bigger than being about the two dogs that killed the JRT. It is clear just from reading the posts in this thread how little people understand about prey drive and how prey drive works. That in itself is so dangerous it's scary. -
Well I was going to upload some video but my camera has crapped itself Glad Millie is doing well RS!
-
I just did a quick weaver session with Daisy ;) we are really only starting out though so only building value for two poles at the moment. I took video so will upload it if it's not too embarrassing

Totally agree with you Erny - I wouldn't want to play a game that I could never win.
