BTW I love the hoola hoop idea! I am so going to try that! I've taught Daisy to retrieve the dumbell and to do scent discrimination - even if we never get to UD it was heaps of fun and there's nothing more exciting than teaching your dog something new and seeing the lightbulb go off in their head Daisy did a brilliant ROH the other night - she really loves going over and back the jump and it looks so cute seeing her jump back over with the dumbell in her mouth

What happens if you get her really excited by the food/toy, and have her sitting in heel position, then take one small step forward? How well does she know where heel position is?
-
I am sure someone more experienced than me can give you a clearer answer, personally I like Daisy to throw herself on the ground as quickly as possible I'm not sure what judges will dock points for exactly, but you don't want him to take too long to down and you don't want him to go through two positions to down. Even if it doesn't lose you points under most judges, it can look messy. If it were me I would be rewarding for fast downs only.

Tiggy I have two 4ft premium leather leashes and one 6ft standard leather leash as well as a 4ft braided leash for trialling and a light weight purple trial leash all from K9 Pro and they are worth every cent - the quality is great and there is nothing like walking your dogs on a nice leather leash the 6ft one i use the most for walking but it's my go to leash I've had for five years or so now. They aren't cheap to buy but they will last forever. I didn't mean to have so many, I'm not really an addict LOL then again I think $90 for a collar and leash is a bargain -Daisy's collar cost more than that alone

Mas I found with Daisy taking it one step at a time helped as did rewarding when she wasn't expecting it i.e I would heel off one or two steps then run backwards and reward. She works best when she has no idea when the reward is coming, the anticipation really helps with her focus.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! TSD it's funny, lately her stays have been really solid and she would not normally break them. Last night was a case of her barking and sitting up as she barked, it was like she couldnt bark lying she had to sit up to do it she finds stays boring so I am quite sure it's frustration. People have suggested I train her to have a relaxed command for stays but if Daisy is not in drive her urge to scent can really take over. At this stage I am not expecting a pass I will be pleased if she does all the other exercises well
-
My problem as of last night is that Daisy, whilst focused and switched on, is bored during stays to the point of barking. I've been told a woof or two would be minor points but it's so frustrating as she's been really good the last few weeks. If I don't rev her up before going into stays, it's likely she'll start scenting the ground and break for that. But after last night if I rev her up enough so she's focused she will bark and possibly sit up as she's barking. I wish this had become a problem a few weeks ago when I had time to fix it Her stays have been so solid lately
-
RS what do you think it is about stepping in the ring that changes their moods?
-
Well tonight at training Daisy did a nice drivey ring run out which was great... not a problem with any of the exercises. Except for down stays which have been brilliant the last few weeks... she has now decided to bark during them and if that's not enough she sits up as she barks I think this trialling business is all too hard

Dogs Reacting To Change Around The House

LOL pete - I just responded to your post in OT -
Some breeds might be easier to train to do certain tasks, it's really not an indicator of intelligence, though. And has nothing to do with training LLW

Thank AS. I will ask around and see if there is any interest here. IMO Rally-o would be perfect for the lower level classes at obedience clubs, way more interesting to pet owners than just paddock bashing and way more interesting for the dogs too

I asked in your other thread but thought I'd ask here - what does he do if you let him out? BTW - some threads will naturally get more responses than others. That's nothing to do with you, just who is online at the time and training/behaviourial threads can often take longer to get responses as fewer people feel they know how to help. You might have had more luck posting this in the training forum as not everyone who posts in there will see threads in General. -
Generally I; or next to me as my dogs sometimes prefer. I don't really mind what they are doing as long as they aren't pulling and comply to my commands when I give them.

Yes, Cody. She has two log ins. It was discussed in the (now locked) thread so I'm not sure how you missed it?
-
Like I said, it is the person who started the thread who has changed their username. If you read the thread, you will discover the person who started the thread (Kazzie) actually already had another DOL username (Kazzie81) and that's the username she has changed to 'deleted'. Where did you get that info? All I can see is that they've only had one username? If you read the thread you'd understand? That's why I linked to it... She created a new log in (Kazzie) which she used to start the thread, then half way through the thread she started posting with her old log in (Kazzie81).
-
Seriously Cody? You read the whole thread, and still find nothing wrong with someone BYBing a pet store dog when they knew better? Like I said earlier, ignorance I understand. Knowingly doing the wrong thing though? Not a chance.

Yes but the difference is, is that the ethical registered breeders are doing everything they can to produce healthy dogs, and if a problem does come up they will work to eradicate it from their breeding program. The same can not be said for BYBers like Kazzie.

Ah ok, I've heard people refer to civil aggression when it comes to working dogs, hopefully someone with working GSD experience will come along and clarify what that means/entails.
-
I am a total GSD noob, but don't working dogs like PP dogs or police dogs need to have a level of aggression of some kind? ETA: When it says natural aggression maybe they are referring to the dog's fight/combat drive or something??
-
I actually thought some people in this thread were being a bit harsh until it was realised Kazzie has been a member of this forum for some time, has posted a fair bit and should know better than to BYB a pet store puppy. Ignorance I understand, some people just don't know better. But those who DO know better but do it anyway? There's no excuse!

Wow thanks Erny they are some great ideas! Will mention them to the instructors tonight at dog school!
