Seven Year Old Girl Competing In Schutzhund
huski replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I agree! That is not something every seven year old can do. I am 22 and my handling is crap And good on her for showing the world that Schutzhund is not a scary sport! -
Is it true it looks like Rally will become ANKC accredited next year? Any plans for a Brisbane workshop?

So both parents are good examples of the breed in that they meet the breed standard? So you know how to read hip/elbow scores from an x-ray? I can't believe that after all the time you've spent on DOL that you would think the members here would want to support a backyard breeder who has bred a litter from a pet stop dog
-
I did, and doing her high5's. I will process and post for you later. Awesome thanks Serena! No hurry just curious if all that barking was worth it
-
I'm the same when I'm walking my dogs - I just want them walking on a loose leash, but we usually stop somewhere for a quick training session which is when I'd ask for formal heel work. I like to make my training session fast and high energy too - the dog will pick up on your energy as well!

Erny what games would you recommend are good for group classes? I hate seeing classes where it's the same old same old and I know some of the instructors at our club are always on the look out for fun new games to try.

And what a reputable breed they must be, selling their pups to a pet store. If they are willing to sell off their pups to a pet store god knows what else they did when it came to breeding

I am so sorry Cin. She was such a beautiful girl. Reading that broke my heart as I can tell how much she meant to you. Run free beautiful Tina.

Apologies for taking the OP further off topic (lovely GSD btw!) but those lists don't prove anything other than that some dogs are more naturally biddable than others. You'd hope BCs rank highly for working well for people, how would they rank if it were a test on their ability to excel in dog sledding? Or their ability as a scent hound? All those tests prove is the inability of the trainer running them to motivate and train breeds outside of their limited experience On a side note, beagles rank 72nd on the "intelligence of dogs" list and my beagle regularly works better than a range of other breeds including BCs at our obedience club. Oh and she walks on a loose leash too Once again the perceived intelligence of a breed has nothing to do with it's capability to walk on a loose leash LLW is not difficult to train and a good trainer can have any dog walking on a loose leash within a short training session regardless of breed.

go Daisy!! Husky I hope you made the RE agent another sandwich!! Luckily she's a dog person so she thought it was funny It was a nice sandwich from a fancy deli - unfortunately I didn't have the ingredients to replicate it

I found the retrieve really easy to train with shaping, and I have (had) a dog who has zero inclination to pick things up/retrieve/take objects when I offer them to her.

Congrats Ptolomy!! He's so cute! What's his name going to be or is that a big secret? Hi Flick I try to stay away from doing big blocks of heel work. For day to day stuff I often walk Daisy down to the local park (only about 10 minutes walk away) which is a big sport oval and we do a training session there. In the beginning I kept training sessions really short and fun and always (and still always) leave them on the high note with the dog wanting more. I'd work on keeping training sessions short but really fun, exciting and do short bursts of heel work where you try and get 110% focus then reward heavily for that. Don't drag heeling out or ask for longer heeling sessions when you know it's likely he will lose focus. Also don't just reward at the end of the exercise, I try and keep Daisy guessing, so I might take two steps then reward etc so she gets rewarded when she's not expecting it.

Goooo Amps and Kyzer

LOL Serena, did you get any barking shots? Further proof she's a naughty little thing Our real estate agent came over the other day and put her bag on the floor. Daisy stuck her head in and before I could stop her she ate the RE's sandwich she had in her bag for lunch so don't let the cute face fool you!
-
Gooooo Kath!!! can't wait to see how she goes on Sunday Congrats Kavik
-
OMG teh Lola pics! She was so funny today... wouldn't sit with her bum on the ground, unless in a basket. Thanks for the pic of Daisy, that intense stare only means one thing... you haz teh foodz!

LOL a dog pulling on the leash has nothing to do with how intelligent it is

Letting Your Dog Wander While Walking
huski replied to kamuzz's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yeah, my girl is mostly pretty good at keeping the leash loose by herself, but she occasionally needs a reminder. If she starts to pull for more than a second or so I normally call her back & make her walk by my side in a sloppy heel for a while. Only non-pulling dogs get to wander & sniff things. Cos, you know, I'm a big meany. In that case I am a big meanie too -

My dogs take tension on the leash as a cue to stop and wait. It's not something I made a concentrated effort to train, it sort of just happened, yay for half assed training -
Letting Your Dog Wander While Walking

Easily - Daisy just puts her head to the ground and scents whilst walking next to me/slightly in front of me. I usually walk her on a 6ft leather leash, as long as the leash has no tension in it I consider it LLW. I don't let my dogs stop to scent things, though. -
Not that unusual (although I haven't seen many beags with them) but I have a clown face too
-
That's true SK, but on the bright side it looks like most of the dogs in the catalogue will be purebreds.
-
Now you have no excuse, she's proven how brilliant she is, you have to raise your expectations
-
Ditto. And if not recognised by the likes of ANKC and Kennel Councils, then at least accepted for the good that they do and not falsely criticised and outlawed. Definitely! Totally agree with you Erny I love watching Schutzhund, it's so impressive!

Yay Millie and Katie!! Just lovely work especially for her first trial! I hope we do that well we when have our first trial - you must be SO proud
