Bit of an assumption to assume everyone who uses a prong collar or anything other than P+ is bullying their dogs
-
I definately will - and thanks to you Huski for letting me know about the course in the first place. It sounds like it's exactly what I've been looking for, and everyone here who has either completed or are completing it are all so enthusiastic (I love all the video's). Now I think I'll have to learn about uploading onto YouTube You're most welcome! It's a great course. I am sure you will love it. Can't wait to see how you guys go ;)

Can't wait LP! Congrats on your two having good runs

Go Ziggy! TSD we need some videos of Zig! I'd love to see him do an obedience round! Do you have any up on utube?

Let us know how you go, gsdog2

Prong collars are only illegal in VIC, but a lot of clubs aren't allowed to use them as per the CC rules (I think - happy to be corrected!)

Re; which is a beagle - the second one
-
I guess any of the working breeds like herders or some of the gundogs can be a good place to start. I think for most dogs though if you get the training right you will have a dog who really enjoys it and can excel at it. My beagle is obviously not a "typical" obedience breed but she loves to train and really enjoys it. She has the drive there it's just a matter of harnessing it in the right way. I would look at what breeds suit you and your lifestyle, and narrow it down from there.

Why don't a family wanting a pet deserve a quality, healthy pup bred by a reputable breeder? I paid less than $1000 for both my pedigree dogs, I would easily pay double that if it meant I was getting the best pet I could to suit my family. Plenty of families happily dosh $1000 or way more for a cute crossbred from a pet store, puppy farmer or BYBer. Despite meeting many lovely crossbreeds and owning one myself I won't take the gamble that comes with buying a crossbred pup. I know what I want in a dog, what suits me, and buying a purebred from a reputable breeder gives me the best chance there is at getting a dog to suit my and my family's lifestyle. I am sorry Huski, that quote isn't mine Sorry Longcoat I must have replied to your post quoting Nanas Will go back and edit now.

It's simple for me... I know exactly what kind of dog will suit my lifestyle. I know what size I want, what temperament, grooming and exercise requirements, etc. For me, the reason I choose purebreds from reputable breeds is because at the end of the day they offer me the best chance possible at getting a dog who will be the best match for my lifestyle. It's not about snobbery - it's a practical choice, and one I take seriously, because I know what kind of dog suits me and what traits I would be miserable to live with, what kind of dogs I can and cannot give a great home to, what I am capable of providing.

But how many people don't know any better and buy on impulse, or buy because they saw a cute picture and want something that looks like that, or because they have no idea about purebreds and all the breeds available? I can think of so many instances where people have bought crossbreeds because they bought into the hype, or because they had no idea on the benefits of buying a purebred. Deciding that two mongrels that do not breed predictably should be recognised by the ANKC purely because the public are buying them is silly. If they want recognition, they can follow the ANKC guidelines and become recognised for the right reasons. I don't see the point in breeding - purebreds or crossbreeds - just for the sake of it. Puppy farmers and BYBers breed for the pet market, does that make it ok? Because they are breeding for the pet market and for no other reason (bar making money of course)?

Long Line Recommendations
huski replied to Oscar (AmBull)'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
So jealous! I saw those at Steve's last QLD workshop. I want one It would be excessive though seeing as I rarely use the one I have now :p I would shoot them off an email I don't think the long lines are on the website. -
I introduced Daisy to a crate when she was an adult without any problems. She loved it straight away, I made it a fun and positive safe place for her to go.

Rivsky, Zuma looks great! You must be so chuffed His focus and drive are fantastic!! Daisy's got serious competition

Me too It is a bit pricier than the lunge lines you can buy from horse supply stores etc but the quality is great. -
I agree with PF and Kavik. I could take or leave Cesar, there are some things I like about him and some things he does that I would never do nor recommend.

Wish I lived in Sydney! Sounds like a great workshop. I think it's the same weekend as the MDBA awards.
-
LOL Haven, I have the same orbee ball! Great pic

A lot of Brissy DOLers (myself included) recommend Jane Harper from Dogs on Track She's lovely and I am sure she will be able to help you. http://www.dogsontrack.com.au/

Sounds like you guys had a great weekend! I would love to do a Uta seminar
-
I would go the ten week old for sure.
-
Glad you had a good training session, Nic! Not sure what I will be doing on Saturday, will pop by Kroll if we can
-
I have no doubt Daisy finds it unpleasant if I withdraw/ignore her/remove the reward when we are TID. It works to correct her behaviour, because it reduces the likelihood of the behaviour I'm correcting occuring again.

I don't think it really matters what dog you take with you. I used to alternate between taking Micha and Daisy all the time. As long as you pay your $5 I don't think which dog you have with you really matters. I would rock up on the 1st of Feb without a dog and just pay the membership and do the intro night then.
